If the bank atm where the withdrawals were made cannot produce the cctv footage of the person who withdrew your money that bank will refund your full money. Just wrote straight to cbn customer complaint office.

If it is established that it was the same trapped card in Diamond atm that was used. Then Diamond bank must have some criminals as employees.

First of all, the atm room has dual control. Meaning there must be 2 staff that go into the atm room and reload cash or retrieve trapped cards. Secondly, the customer service personnel is a big novice! No trained customer service personnel should give a bad example of a situation. He or she is the good face of the bank. Thirdly, believe me, since this has gotten to nairaland, this issue would be investigated immediately by the bank. You can also call 07003000000. Diamond bank always thrives for a positive image. Just know that heads would roll sha for this report. But it is not your business. Yours is to get your money returned and it would. You should have also called your bank immediately to block the card immediately. Some banks like Diamond have a feature on their mobile apps to temporarily block cards. Lastly, people saying the security guard needs to be questioned, security personnels do not have access to the atm room. Unless your atm card was later ejected after you left. There are some instances that the atm card still comes out and the customer might have already left the premises.
You're right bro. The cso goofed by directing the customer to Diamond or Police. The possibility that your the machine later eject the card is also there as this has happened many times even after customers have gone. Then no ATM custodian sleeps in the ATM room, by 9pm he/she would have finish loading for the day and any error afterwards won't really affect the ATM uptime. And if this happens within minutes, all I can say is that the customer behind him might be the culprit as ATM machines do not display customer pin not even on the service screen. It might also be case of swapped card. Moreover, op should have deactivate his card using FirstMobile or call 0700FIRSTCONTACT. I will advise the op to write to first contact and copy CBN fraud unit. You can also report it on twitter. it might take time and a long process but you will get your money back and someone must pay for it.

My fellow Nairalander, please someone swapped your card at the process of assisting you, then while you inserted the wrong card and was inputting your rightful pin then the person saw your pin while holding your real card and machine now seized the wrong card while the person zoomed off to another location and make withdrawal.
Please dear, don't accuse any bank staff.
It's a trending fraud pattern now in town.

Note: If you want to confirm my statement just visit that Diamond Bank branch, where your supposedly ATM card got trapped with a valid ID and insist on collecting your card, you will validate or confirm my word.

Sincere apologies on what happened.

No bank official withdrew your money.
I suspect a skimming device was on that ATM you inserted your card, the fraudster got access to both your card and your pin. Google "skimming" to know better what probably happened to you.
Just what i thought

Hi op, did anybody assist you while operating the machine? Machine don't just swallow ATM card except you put wrong pin three times. Possibility are that: your card has been swapped before getting to the ATM point and you put a wrong card with your correct pin the machine will trap it. Another possibility is that your card was swapped at the ATM point. Nevertheless you can write your bank that you need CCTV footage of the person that used your card and that should give you a clue. Sorry for your loss but most of the times its your carelessness. I work in a rural area I hear this kind of thing everyday. And after all investigation it is either their relatives or somebody assist them at the ATM point.

I will advise every Nairalander to read below. Please check ATM properly before use. If u notice any unusual object, please do not use. Skimming device may be inserted by fraudsters to retract ur card and code ur pin. Thank you all.

Criminals 'card-trapping' at ATM machines to get cash
An industry group has seen the style of attack increase during the first six months of this year

Criminals are embracing methods to trap debit and credit cards in ATMs for retrieval later, a move believed to be motivated by better security measures designed to ensure card details are not copied at the machines, according to an industry group.

The so-called "cash trapping" activities surged in 11 European countries for the first six months of this year, according to the European ATM Security Team (EAST), with members including banks, card associations and law enforcement. EAST's survey covers more than 385,000 ATMs in 23 European countries.

The rise in cash trapping contributed to a near doubling of recorded ATM fraud attacks, EAST said. A total of 11,220 incidents were reported through the end of June, compared to 6,649 attacks for the first six months of last year.

Of the attacks this year, some 6,756 were due to cash trapping. While the number of incidents increased, EAST said the type of fraud is still just 0.4% of fraud-related losses, amounting to less that 500,000 ($690,000). EAST said total ATM fraud amounted to 112 million.

Cards can be trapped in ATMs in several ways. One method is to put a device on the machine that uses tape, wire or thread in order to hold a card in. Criminals can then retrieve cards using tweezers. The PIN can be obtained through observation or by putting an overlay device on the keypad that can record PINs.

For the same period, "skimming" attacks -- or ones where the magnetic stripe of a card is copied for encoding on a dummy card -- fell by 33%, to the lowest level in three years, EAST said. Many banks have retrofitted ATMs to make it more difficult to unobtrusively attach devices to the ATM to record the card details. Banks have also added warnings to avoid ATMs that may appear to have been tampered with.

Card trapping may prove less fruitful to criminals than skimming, because the victims immediately loses their cards and are likely to quickly get in touch with their bank.
But if a card is skimmed, bank customers are unaware. If victims fail to check their bank statements, a criminal could repeatedly withdraw money once at day at the card's limit until it is cancelled or the bank's anti-fraud systems determine something is fishy.

The word is retracted.

Are you sure it didn't eject your card after you left?

This is more serious than I thought.
Follow it up then. You have to write formally to CBN.
If his card was ejected by the ATM machine after he left, how would the person who got hold of it, be able to know his pin?

Are you listening to yourself? What's a security man's business with an ATM card that was swallowed by the ATM? grin

They don't even have access to that ATM room.
If the card gets retracted or ejected by the machine, after the card owner has left the ATM, are you saying the security man would not be able to see it, and retrieve it?

This is not true. Guards don't have access to retrieving of trapped ATM cards.
A simple "are you sure?" or "I don't believe this" stands better that a statement that calls me out to be a liar.

By the way, a guard once helped me out a trapped card at night. Not someone else's but my own experience. He just went to the back am guessing through a back door and got it for me. It was not for money's sake but I always make an habit of greeting the guards when I go to the bank in the past.
Re: How Bank Officials Withdrew My Money Through Swallowed ATM Card by SunnyAmeh: 7:40pm On Jun 06, 2018
Don't generalize hastely on issues you are not vast in. Simply, you were negligent while withdrawing which led to shoulder surfing; this happens when a fraudster stays close to you while withdrawing and he/she is able to pick up your PIN . Most times, when there is network problem that will lead to delay in cards being released, the same fraudster who has already seen the PIN will be the one to advise gullible customers to go and complain, card will be released to the waiting hand of a fraudster and in a moment, you will start receiving debit alerts from ATM in another location. A fraudster can also offer to assist customers to withdraw and in the process swap customer's card with another defective card which will certainly get trapped when you attempt to use it. If he/she succeeds in swapping the card, he/she will leave that area immediately for nearby ATM for withdrawals.

It could also be a case of card swap .some one will tend to assist you or rather deliberately colliding with you and your card falls down and he assist to pick up then in that process swap your card and they will try your pin randomly in most cases people use simple pin.

@infocabal, I can feel your pain o.

Something similar happened to me, I even opened threads about it. My atm card was stolen and all my money was used to buy stuffs online. I disturbed Gtbank like mad. I called them out on Twitter, disturbed the customer care people till they referred me to the manager. I disturbed them to the extent that the bank called from their head office to clarify what happened. I also kept on disturbing the website to cancel the order made with my atm but they said they can't cancel the order because I don't know the full 16 digits on my card since it's not with me again.
After all my wahala, they refunded the money about 2 months after.

The key thing here is, do not sleep on the issue, disturb first Bank, also disturb diamond bank until your money comes out.

Due to this issue that happened to me, I now have 2 bank accounts. The main one is where I keep most of my money and I don't have ATM card for this account (I withdraw over the counter when I need money from this account).
The 2nd one Is the one I have atm card for and I don't have more than 5k in it, once it starts exceeding 5k, I transfer the excess to my other account. So even if my atm card is stolen, it won't hurt me that much.

And need I mention that Naija policemen are very useless. Much emphasis on 'very'......you shouldn't have gone to them at all sef because they are a waste of time.
I also went to Sabo police station to make complaints too when it happened, they were so clueless and unprofessional. Imagine, they asked me to go and bring 15k for them to help me track down the culprit.

Where will I get 15k when all the money in my act was wiped off? I just left the place. Stupid people looking for someone to milk.

Good day my fellow Nairalanders.

I have been hearing of this issue, I didn't believe until it happened to me last week.

I went to withdraw money from Diamond Bank ATM in Gwagwalada, Abuja around 9pm. When it was my turn, I slotted in my ATM card entered my Pin and entered the amount of withdrawal. Only for the Machine to be hang, I was then pressing the red button so it reject my card but alas, it Swallowed my Card.

So disappointed, I told the security man, he said there is nothing can be done, that I should go to my bank which is first Bank to get another ATM card.

I went home that night only for me to be seeing alert of N20,065 four times... And 15,065 once.

And the withdrawal location is in Wuse 2, which is about 50km away from Gwagwalada. My account was emptied and only me know my PIN. Even my wife doesn't know it.

So the next morning I went to first Bank to complain about the matter, and they told me someone withdrew the money in another location. I told them how possible is that? When
1. Am the only one that know my PIN
2. The location of withdrawal is 50mins away and I got alert less than that time.
3. The card was swallowed up by Diamond bank ATM and I still waited for it to come out but it didn't.

Infact, the customer care lady said, 2 other people came to complain about the same incident from the same location where my ATM was swallowed.

I was told to visit Diamond bank or the Police.
Quickly I went to police station to lay my complain.
Only for the DPO to tell me to bring N5, 000 to write letter to the bank.
And I told him, where will i get the money from, when they have withdrew all the money in my account.

To cut the long story short, we are still on the matter, I was even made to know that bank officials connive to criminals to get swallowed atm card and correlating PIN, don't really know how true this is.

It's becoming a rampant case gradually, rhetoric relevant authority should be informed please.

reach @citizensgavel on twitter and share this same story, copy @segalink cbn cnn cpc etc thank me later

For little withdrawals, you can transfer the funds to an "always-in-the-red" account from your maim account. Then do the withdrawal. In fact, it is advised that you keep the ATM of the main account at home (to insure against loss, theft or robbery while you move around with the ATM of the "always-in-the-red" account. You need cash; transfer, then withdraw.

For higher withdrawals, you can consider walking into the bank. But who drives around with millions in cash these days anyways?

Tips to avoid being skimmed
The FBI advises consumers to protect themselves from skimming with the following tips:

Inspect the ATM, gas pump, or credit card reader before using it…be suspicious if you see anything loose, crooked, or damaged, or if you notice scratches or adhesive/tape residue.
When entering your PIN, block the keypad with your other hand to prevent possible hidden cameras from recording your number.
If possible, use an ATM at an inside location (less access for criminals to install skimmers).
Be careful of ATMs in tourist areas…they are a popular target of skimmers.
If your card isn’t returned after the transaction or after hitting “cancel,” immediately contact the financial institution that issued the card.

GidiWoodsMan:

The N65 appendage on amounts dispensed is simple remote-on-us charges, that is how it shows on your statement when you withdraw from ATMs other your own bank.

The card was not swallowed by the ATM, rather, the Diamond machine he used had a skimmer device attached and the bank guard was definitely in on it. The card was retrieved from the skimmer after the OP had left. Of course that guard thought he was protecting himself by asking his asociates not to use the retrieved card on the same machine at the initial location, so the thieves went all the way to Wuse to use the card.

ATM locations usually have CCTV installed and trained/focused to include the general vicinity of the machines, if they check the footage that guard and his friends would have been captured on film when they were putting the skimmer in place and also retrieving cards from it.
100% correct... END OF DISCUSSION

All correct! That's simply the new safe, after one lady gave a testimony here on nairaland how they were robbed on her way to work to the extent that those culprits demanded for their ATM card n pin, I deem it safer to have two bank accounts, always carry "the-always-red" account ATM around, if u need money transfer to "the-always-red" account from the green account when need for huge amount comes just do bank to bank transfer. Shikena!

Better safe than sorry...
OP like I told u, if the intervention of whosoever you are working with is not satisfactory do not hesitate to pm me or drop your number, I will be so willing to help n the legal team that will intervene on the matter won't demand a dime from you.

However involve Servicom, Public Complain Commission (PCC), Bank of industry (BOI) and more especially CBN I assure your getting of justice sooner than you think, this is actually a good case that can fetch you bigger bucks bordering on damages, fraud and other stuffs if you trade wisely.

Best of luck!
