That was far far back until 2005. Yahoo messenger have been useless since then.
Many people are used to old fashioned email and telephone, even though new inventions were introduced every year.

I made so many friends through Yahoo messenger. Some of them my facebook friends now. We had to migrate from YM to FB.

I missed my Indian friends I had through YM. All of them but one whom I lost their contacts after YM was no longer in vogue.

Next is BBM to go extinct

Oath Inc today announced that it is shutting down the once popular Yahoo Messenger come July 17th 2018. The service was once a very popular instant messaging apps back in the days, before the coming of WhatsApp, Viber, Facebook, Twitter and many others. The company says while it may be shutting the service down, your Yahoo ID remains intact for other services like Mail and fantasy sports.

Before now, Oath had also shut down AIM’s AOL Instant messenger back in December last year. Although the company gave no reason for the action, but it can be far from the dominance pose by the likes of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and other chat service.

The company has been testing its new chat service call Squirrel for months. It is believed that this may be used to replace Yahoo messenger.

Didn't know it was still functioning sef. I used to spend a lot of time chatting and making friends on YIM back then in 2001-04. It was fun back in the days.

Yes they just give out knowledge and information freely. I think corruption is the reason for shutting down.

It doesn't really matter because we have seen a lot of hot stuff come and go. But the way the are doing it these days is intentionally targeted at a particular audience all the way.
Those days when yim reigned people who ran virtual campaigns could use hotmail for sending unlimited messages, and get a huge bulk of response. It made them feel they were working. Later, hotmail got hit and they reduced and reduced and reduced until now they only send as many as 200 or so messages per day. But hotmail is still in business till date and offering email services and other stuff. The same for Yahoo. So even if yim shuts down, it doesn't stop the job, it means another head of the Hydra is running the show.

exactly, they were not innovative enough. Innovation is key. Yahoomail would have been extinct if not for the huge customer base they were able to acquire early. Many who have yahoomail have Gmail now self. This relates to Nokia too
