In 1966, Kotoka along with other Ghanaian army officers overthrew president Kwame Nkrumah in a bloody coup. He was appointed army chief following the takeover.
The military regime dismantled all the training camps where freedom fighters from all over Africa were being trained to fight against the colonial power in their home countries.
Later in 1967 there was a counter - coup during which Kotoka was shot dead but the coup failed. Plotters were exucuted and Ghana main Airport was name after
general Kotoka.
