Great stadium but... This standard of football pitch we are celebrating as our best is nothing special and common in advanced counties. Wouldn't it be more exciting if the stadium was an innovating first of its kind never to be seen anywhere else and set as a standard for others to follow? We're just too far behind.

Every time we take an inch forward the others are miles ahead. Even most of the advanced if not all modern facilities we have are gotten from them. When will we have to stop paying millions of dollars to get others to do stuff for us.

Just do a quick research by heading into your kitchen and picking the most common products Nigerians use daily and you'll be certainly surprised to discover that nine out of ten of those common brands are neither started by nor owned by a Nigerian.

The way Africa is so disadvantaged now maybe a world war might not necessarily be a bad thing as when the lions and tigers fight to the death the creeping vultures reap the highest benefits. There is opportunity in disaster if luck is on our side. Honestly, this is the only thing that I can see changing and resetting the playing fields in the long run.

The last match that I saw there, nigeria vs Athletico Madrid, I was very angry with my country people. I wanted to use the convenience (toilet) but what I saw made me inconvenient and reiterate the fact that Nigeria is a very big shit hole country.

Shit was scattered on the floor like cement paste waiting to be used for plastering. It's a shame!!!

Very beautiful..... but not really necessary I must say, because Nigerian people are mostly poor and the resources used to build this beautiful edifice would have raised a lot of folks above poverty line....

Total waste and a needless ego white elephant project that's of zero economic or employment benefit to the people and the state in general.


To make matters worse, the unemployment rate in this state is 36%, the 2nd highest in Nigeria after Rivers, the second richest and poorly managed state in Nigeria with the highest unemployment rate @ 41.82%.

This could have built many skill acquisition centers, schools and ICT hubs to give their teaming unemployment youths needed skills to compete with especially in a state with little or no skilled manpower. In fact, this same state is now forcing employers and investors to hire and train their people before they are allowed to invest and create jobs.

The National Stadium in Abuja is still better than this in all aspects bar aesthetics.

In terms of infrastructure, structural soundness, inflow and outflow of spectators, complexity, pitch overlay.. I still give it to it.

What makes the UYO stadium pleasant to the eyes is the external facade bearing space trusses.

No doubt, Akpabio deserves accolades for that stadium.

you're not used to modern things. I can't help you.

The inside is nice. But the landscaping around the facility is non-existent or in a terrible state.

You see red soil with patches of grass spots even from the main entrance like an unfinished construction site,
grasses by the main road are routinely trimmed by fulani herdsmen cows, and no trees planted,
very disgraceful and rusted name/sign post,
the facility surrounding is usually not cleaned up after an event resulting in empty pure water pouches littering everywhere,
this place is a typical Nigerian-style development of poor finishings and surrounding.

Sadly, the area around the stadium is fast becoming a slum, with mechanic shops and palm wine drinking spots popping up around the area.

If Akwa Ibom government were smart, that whole area around this stadium would be bought and turned into a themed pleasure park with superb landscaping around the entire facility, instead of all the four-post wood and zinc shades that poor people are building around the stadium for their trading business.

But ofcourse, the Nigerian brain has taken over the leadership of the state and that brain is incapable of thinking of ways to attract potential spenders to the state through development of tourism, but very good at stealing.

I don't know your architectural aspective but when all you can see from the outside are the barebones and ribs of the underlying structure then you should understand that the structure was probably designed by an engineer or an architect under severe oversight which is symptomatic of the way thkngs are done in Germany. It is a poor architectural piece.

Even the all concrete Marcana built decades ago in improverished Brazil is more catching to the eye. National stadia are supposed to be total expressions of culture and vibe in appearance and appeal simply because they celebrate a country to the outside world where budgets and expense are secondary. Look at some of the stadia in South Africa. Even those privately owned where budgets, business and functionality is a priority over aesthetics. Most still manage a better smile than the Abuja edifice.

When some countries with little or no resources have so much to to be proud of in terms of public structures,leaving standards etc...we occasionally find ourselves very excited about one or two developments in Nigeria.
Like the say we need to start from some were, however I don't see Nigeria going forward or backward.

Try to read my post again. I said aesthetically, Abuja Stadium is nowhere near UYO stadium.

For your information, structurally, I'd rather go for Abuja than Uyo reason being that Abuja has larger spectators than Uyo and it has option of expansion from little over 60k to little over 80k compared to Uyo's 30k capacity.

The wind load in Abuja can never be compared with that of Uyo which still forms some criteria for structural analysis and design.

All facilities within the Abuja stadium are designed and engineered in compliance with the requirements of international sport associations, particularly the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). -Wiki

Ibadan city should have a stadium like this especially free land wasting along Iwo road, at sango, even at molete or even dugbe... The stadium would bring development to Ibadan quickly, so that most of those brown roofs would be done away with.....

However, I wish my state Ondo has a structure like this....
