Well, AGFC has been aware for quite sometime of three documents they claim proves this so-called “hidden agenda”. LGBT advocates need to be aware of these as though it might sound silly there are many anti-gay activists in Jamaica who use these documents to push this conspiracy theory as they actually believe they are central and important to the LGBT movement.
In 1987, a man named Michael Swift was asked to contribute an editorial piece to a gay newspaper which was considered a bit more to the left of most gay and lesbian papers. The anti-gay activists changed the name to “The Homosexual Manifesto” in order to make it appear as some guiding document. After the anti-gay religious group Traditional Values Coalition promoted it in films with ominous music and pictures of children, a U.S. congressman read it in Congress thinking it was an actual manifesto. Of course, the very first line of the document makes it obvious that the piece was satirical and was not only unrelated to the LGBT movement but was not intended to be serious. Two other documents are “The Overhauling of Straight America” and “After the Ball: How America Will Conquer Its Fear and Hatred of Gays in the ’90s”. Michael Kenneth Kirk and Hunter Madsen wrote the article “The Overhauling of Straight America” in 1987 and was published by Guide Magazine. This article was then developed into the book “After the Ball: How America Will Conquer Its Fear and Hatred of Gays in the ’90s” which is out of print today. In their book they outlined a public relations strategy for the LGBT movement. After its publication Kirk appeared in the pages of Newsweek, Time and The Washington Post. They argued that gays must portray themselves in a positive way to straight America, and that the main aim of making homosexuality acceptable could be achieved by getting Americans “to think that it is just another thing, with a shrug of their shoulders”. While the article and book are indeed real there is no evidence that this book was used for a strategy by the LGBT movement. In fact, the book is no longer printed and old copies are only bought by anti-gay Christian activists on Amazon.com.
Dr. Wayne West and Rev. Peter Garth have quoted these. Dr. Wayne West ACTUALLY believes that the rejected public service announcement produced by the Jamaican Forum for Lesbians All-Sexuals and Gays (JFLAG), Unconditional Love, is a manifestation that the LGBT movement is following this document. They believe this book has made the LGBT movement successful and some anti-gay Christian activists claim it was used to “sell sodomy to America”.
The third document is the called the “1972 Gay Rights Platform” which according to them was created by the National Coalition of Gay Organizations Convention held in Chicago in 1972″. Only anti-gay Christians have mentioned this document. AGFC is not aware what the National Coalition of Gay Organizations is or whether one really existed. Anti-gay Christians have provided no evidence that this document is real except by quoting it and talking about it amongst themselves. According to them these were the things gay rights activists wanted to achieve which included removing age of consent laws and polygamy. A section is quoted below:
STATE LEVEL: 1. All federal legislation and programs enumerated in Demands 1, 6, 7, 8, and 9 above should be implemented at the State level where applicable. 2. Enactment of legislation prohibiting insurance companies and any other state-regulated enterprises from discriminating because of sexual orientation, in insurance and in bonding or any other prerequisite to employment or control of one’s personal demesne. 5. Enactment of legislation so that child custody, adoption, visitation rights, foster parenting, and the like shall not be denied because of sexual orientation or marital status. 6. Repeal of all state laws prohibiting transvestism and cross-dressing. 7. Repeal of all laws governing the age of sexual consent. 8. Repeal of all legislative provisions that restrict the sex or number of persons entering into a marriage unit; and the extension of legal benefits to all persons who cohabit regardless of sex or numbers.
