From what I know, current from domestic source does not produce fatal consequence due to earthing. How did it pass through the phone to produce such disaster. Did the phone simply amplify the supply?

Not possible in this case, the main components would be damaged immediately. The voltage coming from the charger's transformer needs to be rectified and it's almost impossible to see a rectifier in a mobile charger with a peak of 50V. These kind of stories are usually bull crap.

This is very possible. The fault is not usually from the phone but the charger. Once I bought a charger. It shocks like hell when I mistakenly touch the camera (has metal component). Some of these chargers they sell in the market are not friendly at all. You better take caution.
