Re: Pls Explain by afrobaby(f): 10:40am On Jun 04, 2010
buy decoration for which church, do the decoration for which church
is it the total amount of ur tithe that u used for the decoration?

Personally, I believe it is not compulsory I pay my tithes in cash or cheque, If I see the very pressing need of my church, I may decide to provide what is needed, as long as am convinced in my mind that it is needed by my church
Also, I will ensure the total aamount used is either equal or greater than my tithe value, but not less

Nevertheless, I have not been faced with such a situation, hence I pay my tithe in cash

No way! The Bible says all the TITHE should be brought into His house that there maybe meat in His house buying of decoration materials does not imply you have paid your tithe o. It simply means it has been spent. Pay the Tithe as unto God and if you have money to meet other pressing needs in the church you can go ahead and if not there is no problem about that. The main issue is that you pay your tithe. Please it is important.

@persien, the way u replied make me feel asif u were around when the Bible was written or something

"No way! The Bible says all the TITHE should be brought into His house that there maybe meat in His house buying of decoration materials does not imply you have paid your tithe o. When the Bible says so that theremay be meat in his house, can I ask u, is money meat
What abt farmers in the bibles that brongs the first fruits of their harvest into the church as tithe, will u tell themto sell it and bring money instead
From my understanding of payment, it is not restricted to money alone, u can pay in cash or inmaterial things

Money is not the only means of payment, it has to do with the individual and GOD

Do not judge

Its like trying to use one stone to kill 2 birds. You cant cut corners with God. If God ask you to buy decoration materials. Do it. But not at the expense of your tithe. In the first place , you are not the one to determin what the tithe should be used for, If you use your tithe to buy the materials, you havent given the tithe yet. You dont cut cornrers in spiritual matter. It will no longer be of faith.

There are several givings in Gods house. One should not be at the expense of another. For example. God commanded people to give to him in his house of worship, God also commanded that people give to their parents . But some people tried to cut corners by neglecting their parents and claiming that what they would have given the parents, they have ssown it as a seed in God's house. Jesus said it is wrong.

Mark 7:10-13
For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: [11] But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. [12] And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; [13] Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

And this thread is a classic example of legalism, and why legalism kills.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legalism_(theology)

@Gbemyte, there are two ways -
1 - Tithing ritualistically, based on a defunct Old Testament Law that is no longer applicable to New Testament christians

as opposed to

2 - Tithing or Freely giving in response to grace and as you've decided in your heart.

This thread is a classic example of #1. Questions like "can I substitute my tithe for this? or can I pay my tithe using that?"  #1 will keep you in chains, #2 will set you free. I hope you choose to set yourself free from deceitful pastors robbing you in the name of God. Godbless.

Malachi 3 referred to a very ancient Jewish custom. Even the Jews who owned the custom don't practice it today, I don't think. And only farm produce was tithed even then, though money was in use: Jesus rebukes Jewish religious teachers in Mathew 23:23:

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

Gold and silver coins were the money in use in Jesus time. But you heard him saying they tithed spices. Jews tithed farm produce only. Don't you wonder what happened to the farm produce all those people brought to the temple in ancient times? Did you think they left it there to rot? Or that God came down and ate the farm produce? Who did you imagine the food was meant for? Why did they have the custom? And what's the basis for you, a Nigerian not bound by Jewish laws and customs, giving a tenth of your monetary income to a pastor? If you're going to pay for God to bless you, go ahead and pay for your salvation too, since it's just as free.

If you reckon God's blessings in terms of material wealth, check out the world's wealthiest people and see how many are religious, much less pay tithe. Youe money would be better spend emulating the One you follow: give to orphans and the poor and needy as comes from your heart, and stop throwing money away to some church. Ask yourself if you serve God better by putting food in an orphan or widow's belly, or by giving away your monetary income to some church or pastor. A church needs money to run, but tithing is a dishonest way to get this money. Did you see Christ demanding a tenth of the income of his disciples? He had a job as a carpenter. That is the son of God, with a ministry and yet working to earn a living and give to the poor. Maybe it's high time you tell your pastor to get a job and stop living off the labour of other people.

Hmmm! Am short of words.
Re: Pls Explain by KunleOshob(m): 12:50pm On Jun 05, 2010
@OP
In the first instance tithing is not a christian obligation, but a manipulation of scriptures to achieve a predetermined end of fleecing the flock thru twisted teachings. Christian giving as taught by the disciples should be "as you purpose in your heart" 2 Cor 9:7. Tithing as it is preached and practised today is unchristian and derived from the manipulation of obsolete jewish rites recorded in the old testament. To have a better idea on why tithing in churches today is unscriptural, read Deut 14:22-29 to see the true meaning and purpose of tithing.
Re: Pls Explain by jcross19: 5:13pm On Jun 05, 2010
It baffle me that my people are stumbling b,cos they lack knowledge , check your bible very well and reason withing yourself. firstly, what is the purpose of tithe and it's significant secondly, where is the tithe paid is it in the church or temple , please do not tell me that church and temple are the same okay . after that you will know what am talking about .look after the death of christ a new way of worship emerged which is called "christian " . LET ME TELL YOU THE TRUTH ANY PASTOR THAT MAKES TITHE COMPULSORY IN THE CHURCH IS CROOK B,COS THAT IT'S NOT THE TEACHING OF THE CHRIST.
Re: Pls Explain by Enigma(m): 5:25pm On Jun 05, 2010
Yep, I add my voice to the view that "tithing" is not an obligation required of Christians; a Christian will better abide by Christ's teaching by helping the poor, widows, orphans and other needy people.
