I was to receive a parcel from China with Nipost office, Ejigbo. The parcel came through and I was told it was tagged with customs duty of about #12,000 which I had to pay to pick up my item or they send it back, whereas the parcel is not worth upto #40,000.
The lady in the Ejigbo Nipost pickup location said it came that way from her boss in their office at Oshodi. So I journeyed to the Oshodi office to hear from the horse's mouth and she said "customs do whatever they like nowadays and I had to pay such huge sum to collect my parcel", when I asked for her name, she only said she was the manager of Nipost, Oshodi.
After much investigation, I went back to the Ejigbo office and asked to see the paper with custom duty placed on it so as to know truly if they are really trying to scam me but stories came up as expected. The same light skinned lady on low-cut said she had sent back the paper with custom duty to Oshodi for return since I had said I wasn't paying for that item but she has the item with her in their office in Ejigbo. I was only interested in the account number placed on it to know if it was a government account number then I would ascertain it's genuine. After much talk, she started acting all busy and ignored me.
Whereas on custom regulations, if I was to be charged for such item at all, it's usually not more than 7% of the original cost price.
The case is yet to be resolved because they I am of a certainty that both the manager of Nipost Oshodi and the lady that works in Ejigbo are on to defraud me and I am out to put a stop to grassroot corruption and fraud.
This is my predicament with Nipost Ejigbo and the manager of Nipost Oshodi.
Ps: I have a recorded conversation with the lady in the Ejigbo Nipost office as evidence of the fraud going on in our Nigerian postal service and until something is done as regards, I would release the recording to the media.
Please don't ask for the recording yet, let's give them grace to sort themselves out before anything else.

can corruption ever come to an end in this country especially from civil servant?? I can recall the case of a lawyer who was asked to pay extra charges in a court of law; who does that? It's like punching a soldier in the face inside barrack.

good moves man, the reasons these sort of incidents occur in Nigeria is because we fail to report and just go with the flow. glad you're taking a step to expose them.

You are wasting time.... So you don't know what to tell them to make them release your goods abi! Buy someone at Nipost some snacks and they will tell you their names. Call their names and give them ultimatum, tell them you've heard terrible reports about them( call the names) that you will instigate an investigation about them. Guy tell them something that will rattle them and see them give you your thing make u carry your wahala go.

Although I now have a copy of this but you invaded my privacy, my name and address is clearly stated there, it should have been censored, but I would let that slide because an adage says "a pure heart is not afraid of the midnight knocking"
I suppose this is the Delivery Notice you are talking about. The charges therein are genuine . Nobody is trying to defraud you. The breakdown Of The amount you were told is there.

Sorry about that but this was only way I thought I could get to you. Was just trying to be helpful. The NIPOST Zonal Manager in charge of Lagos Zone has been made aware of your case. If you can ava8l me a channel, of communication, I'll send you her response. Thank you for your understanding.

And so I went to Oshodi post office today, met with the manager.
I asked her about the delivery note with the customs duty, she was puzzled at first, then later said she had asked the Ejigbo attendant to bring it for her perusal but she left with it. (I know it's all cover up). But then she asked me to come back later in the evening when I'm returning from work which I did.
On getting there, she (manager manager Oshodi office) showed me a photocopy of the said DN(delivery note) with #11,100 on it, she didn't allow me get a copy nor a snapshot but with my photographic memory, I got some of the breakdown which were abbreviated thus:
Duty: #6,000
Sk: #1,050
Vat: #3,300
***: #420
Total: #11,100
Ps: the values there aren't exactly accurate but are very close.
Also, on the DN I was shown, I saw the value of my product as #60,000 whereas the price of the product was clearly stated on the product as $108 about #38,000.
Since the DN is #11,100, it means I was charged 30% the price of my product as custom duty.
To start with, I don't even know how Customs charge for such product but this is what I know: "Exemption from customs duties
Customs duties do not have to be paid if the value of the parcel is under 150 euros, regardless of whether it was ordered from a web store or sent to you as a gift.
Quantitative restrictions have been set for tax-free alcohol, tobacco products, perfume, eau de toilette, coffee and tea."
At the moment, the bone of contention is how customs or NIPOST value the product and the rate at which they charge products.
I need to be clear with these things...

Thank you for this evidence I couldn't actually get a hard copy or snapshot. I'm sure you must be working at the Oshodi branch and be close to your madam to have had this.
Just so you know, I am a human right activist, I have nothing to lose and I'm going to follow up this case to the end.
With the picture that you posted, although it's photocopy, it's actually the same I saw yesterday, and it carries customs stamp, I would suppose the persons involved are increasing.
Before I take my final steps in this investigation, I would still ask, on what basis was the duty charge, how was my parcel rated, what percentage did custom use to arrive at that figure on the DN and how come they estimated my goods to #60,000, why was my goods charged with 30% if there isn't a shady deal going on?

The value of this item on jumia even with the profit they would make after delivering it to my doorstep is clearly stated in the picture there.
The amount in dollars is my invoice of my parcel.
I'm putting it to the world now, Nipost that is a Federal Government agency is asking for #11,100 as custom duty. Does it make sense

Trust me you don't have an idea of how a delivery note can be forged, formulated and faked. Do you know that I was told to go to customs at NAHCO incidentally it's close to where I work....
Re: A Nairalander About Falling Victim To Fraud In Local NIPOST by Samyokporua(m): 12:34am On Jul 04, 2018
Customs have taken responsibility for the mishap and would reassess the parcel... hence I would beg not to release any of the recordings I made with the people at NIPOST.
