Ever since the Nigerian football team, the Super Eagles made their first apperance at the FIFA World cup in 1994, they have continually met a certain team which has defeated them 5 times, Argentina. Next, is a look at the different moments where Argentina has beaten Nigeria:

FIFA World Cup 1994


In 1994 the super made their first appearance at the world cup and were in the group D alongside Argentina, Greece and Bulgaria. The Eagles played their first match with Bulgaria having a 3-0 win and on 25th June played against Argentina at the Foxboro Stadium, Foxborough, Micheal Emenalo #19 and Austine Eguavoen #2 recived a yellow card, so also Claudio Caniggia #7 of Argentina. Samson Siasia opened scores in the 8th minute, the South American team equalized on 22 minutes and by the 29th minute took the lead with a Claudio Caniggia goal. They were defeated 2 – 1 on fulltime and managed to scale to the next stage after beating Greece to a 2-0 in their final game.

Starting Eleven for the Eagles on the day: Peter Rufai, Augustine Eguavoen, Uche Okechukwu, Chidi Nwanu, Finidi George, Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, Samson Siasia, Daniel Amokachi, Sunday Oliseh, Michael Emenalo


FIFA World Cup 2002

Argentina and Nigeria met June 2, 2002 at the Kashima Stadium Ibaraki, Kanto, Japan by 14:30pm (local time).

The starting eleven for both teams were: Argentina: Pablo Cavallero, Juan Sorin, Mauricio Pochettino, Claudio Lopez, Javier Zanetti, Gabriel Batistuta, Ariel Ortega, Juan Veron, Diego Placente and Diego Simeone.

Nigeria: Ibrahim Shorunmu, Joseph Yobo, Celestine Babayaro, Nwankwo Kano, Isaac Okorokwo, Taribo West, Bartholomew Ogbeche, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Garba Lawal, Efetebore Sodje and Julius Aghahowa.

Coaches: Bielsa Marcelo (ARG) and Onigbinde Adegboye (NGA)

Argentina won the game 1-0 with a Gabriel Batistuta header in the 63rd minute.

FIFA World Cup 2010

In 2010, both teams played themselves again. This time in South Africa at the Ellis Park Stadium Johannesburg, South Africa. Local time: 16:00pm.

Argentina: Sergio Romero, Martin Demichelis, Gabriel Heinze, Angel Di Maria, Juan Veron, Gonzalo Higuain, Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Walter Samuel, Javier Mascherano, Jonas Gutierrez

Nigeria: Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo, Taye Taiwo, Danny Shittu, Yakubu Ayegbeni, Sani Kaita, Lukman Haruna, Chidi Odiah, Victor Obinna, Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi, Dickson Etuhu

Coaches: Diego Maradona (ARG) and Lars Edvin Lagerback

Argentina won the game 1-0 with a Gabriel Heinze goal in the 6th minute.

FIFA World Cup 2014

Being the fourth time the Nigeria team was making it to the world cup, it was hosted in Brazil where the Nigerian team was in group F with Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iran. Played there first match with Iran drawing up to 0-0, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina to a 1-0, then on 25 June 2014 at the Estádio Beira-Rio stadium Porto Alegre met with Argentina and in 3 minutes Lionel Messi scored leaving Ahmed musa of the Super Eagles with no option than to equalize in 4the minute, Messi also in (45+1) minute scored with Musa doing justice with another goal in the second half but at about 10mins to fulltime, Marcos Rojo scored the goal that lead Nigeria to the defeat of Argentina 3-2.

FIFA World Cup 2018


June 26, 2018 was the fifth time Nigeria and Argentina would be meeting at the world cup, after meeting at the previous world cup both were determined to do more. Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead on 14 minutes, Victor Moses equalised six minutes into the second half but Rojo scored the most important goal with four minutes left on the clock. Argentina won 2-1 to qualify for the 2nd round and Nigeria was out.
