American companies will tell you family first i.e if you have accrued enough time, if not, it's either you're off the book or they tell you to quit.

That's the way this society we live in works. They prioritize their jobs over our wellbeing.

She was not going to be paid for the hours she did not work. She was only trying, to inform the manager of her reason for not coming, in the case the manager can get someone else to work her shift as overtime.
The manager did not show empathy, that's the only fault he/she had.
I would have responded in these lines if I was the manager. "Oh!, I'm sorry about your son's case, and I know this might be a tough and trying time for you and I will have you in my prayers, but I the work schedule has been switched and unfortunately I cannot be able to find someone to cover your shift", before hitting her with the hard lines that follow.

You're so right, This is how America system works, if it's not a time off request, the manager can't be sacked, the masses helped the woman if not,the company wouldn't have sacked the manager. The manager can also sue them and she'll win.

A woman was sacked because she gave Trump a middle finger. Some days later people donated money to her. Watch as people who see this case differently will help the manager

Lesson learnt. The manager should have delivered the news face to face or through phone call so employee won't have evidence to get her fired.
She could've denied but now there is text evidence.

And didn't you see where the manager told her "this is not the way we do things here" in the chat? meaning the employee was not following rules, came up chatting up the manager rather than going the official route. infact why am i even typing self when you have refused to read the initial chat/thread. If you've really worked here in the usa, you'd know there is a limited number of days you can call in to work. It's called "sick days" and "paid vacation days". Most jobs you get 3 sticks days a year and 2 weeks (10 working days) vacation once a year. If you dont ise it, it doesn't roll over to the next year.
Once you use it up, your job is dangling by a thread.
They fired the manager because of reputation not law suits. I sabi person wey dem fire over maternity leave.

Ever heard of blackmail? the employee was using her child as a tool for manipulation. Except she wants to claim she lives and sleep in the hospital when she closes from work, then all i say is trying to continuously manipulate the manager with pity party not minding that the manager is also a female that understand emotional manipulation.

Like she doesn't have a family who can go check up on the child or even husband. Well the media has made it viral and a woman who was doing her job got sacked for doing her job. she will surely get another job so no biggie. 1 good staff lost and 1 on and off staff left.

This is soo uncalled for, that boss was right, the company dont want a public backlash so that it wont affect their product and services, they had to say she should take all the time she needs wow, imagine if everyone decides to take unending leave cos of the ill health of a loved one, when that entitlement filled woman resumes, she will be soo frustrated to the extent of resigning

It is not possible for everybody to have their kids on life support. It was a difficult time for the employee, but the callous, evil manager never cared.

We are foremost humans, and empathy should be part of our human culture. We must stop condoning and excusing whatever is not proper. While I could agree with you that the motive for the firing of the manager might be for PR reasons, but the manager put the cart before the horse and it was a wrong way to talk to someone probably grieving.

Thank God, those that condemned her can see that this is Nigeria where we are not wanted to exist in.
