World Cup 2018: "My Son Is Made Scapegoat" - Mesut Ozil's Father by GisthoodBlog(m): 7:58am On Jul 09, 2018
Germany Star Mesut Ozil's Father has stated that he would rather the player quit the national team.

Mustapha Ozil said his son was "made the scapegoat" for Germany's early exit from the 2018 World Cup.

The 29-year-old was heavily criticised in Germany after the 2014 Champions finished bottom of their Group.

Ahead of the World Cup, there were controversies over a picture Ozil took with Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that was capitalised on to question his loyalty to Germany.

Last week, Germany Legend Oliver Bierhoff said in a statement suggesting Ozil, who has Turkish roots should have been dropped from the squad after he failed to publicly clear the air on his meeting with Erdogan.

Reacting to this, Ozil’s father told Bild “This statement is insolent. In my opinion, it is aimed at saving one’s own skin.”

Mustapha has insisted that his son agreed to have a picture with Erdogan only out of "politeness" and it was never meant to be a political statement.

He also defended Ozil for not clearing the air on the issue.

“He no longer wants to explain himself, he no longer wants to have to defend himself all the time.

“He has been playing for nine years in the German team … including becoming world champions with the A-team.

“He has contributed a lot for this country. It has always been: if we win, we win together.

“But when we lose, we lose because of Ozil? He is now getting whistled at and made a scapegoat . I can understand if he feels insulted,” said the midfielder’s father.

He added that the treatment was “so unfair”, adding that, “he needs to decide for himself. But if I were in his place, I’d say – thanks a lot but that’s it!”

“The hurt has grown too strong. And who knowswhat’ll happen at the next match. In Mesut’s place, I would step down. But that's just my very personal opinion,” he said.
