There is no difference in the way school bus drivers and danfo drivers drive on Lagos roads. I almost got hit by one this morning around the Bucknor, Jakande Gate axis today and the man behaved as if nothing happened and drove speedily away, probably to avoid any confrontation with me or other motorists.

Do these schools do checks on the kinds of drivers they recruit? Honestly, I don't think they do. Several times I have complained to a particular school along Ailegun Road about the way some of their bus drivers drive recklessly as if they are on the highway or trying to win a speed contest on a neighborhood road with another vehicle. Even if they want to get the children to school on time, that sort of driving is unsafe.

Please share your experiences and how you have handled this sort of problem.

If you're a headteacher or school administrator and you have heard a similar complaint you need to caution your drivers. The safety of the children in your care should be guaranteed in the hands of whoever handles them.

I think there should be someone like a coordinator on the school bus with the children who is saddled with responsibility of checking the excesses of the driver and cautioning him. In the event that all these measures do not have any positive effect, the coordinator should report the driver to the school authorities.
