Ninja Gaiden Black (Xbox)

The boss fights. Ask any Ninja Gaiden Black player the first thing they remember about the game, and they'll tell you it was the boss fights.

And not in a good way, like a quirky dungeon boss in Zelda or something, but in a cruel, unrelenting and semi-disturbing way, kind of like every inch of your soul is being sucked out of your body.

Then, of course, there's the never-ending barrage of enemies that attack you all at once at every moment your console is switched on.

Ninja Gaiden Black was created as a response to players who thought Ninja Gaiden was too tough. The fact that the game would ask you if you wanted to lower the difficulty once you'd died, like, a zillion times, means that the developers caught onto the fact they'd created a monster. But it also served as a swipe at your dignity. "Oh, is it too hard for the 'ickle gamer? Let me make it easier for you. Poor baby."

Castlevania set a kind of standard for insanely difficult games, a standard that kept on moving through the retro era like a never-ending gauntlet of razor-sharp rotor-blades. And though Castlevania is undoubtably a difficult game (and an influentially difficult one at that), you get a sense that it takes a real pride in its difficulty. And at least it's semi-fair.

Well, sort of. Take a look at the way each level is laid out - perfectly so, as if to ensure that every single touch of your controller is perfectly timed. Then there's the endless array of enemies designed purposely to give you brain ache. We won't mention that the same endless array of enemies will knock down half your health should they hit you, or the fact that you can't move whilst jumping.

I don't consider DMC or GOW to be difficult. Any game with limitless weaponry is a no no for me. They all fall in the easy category.
