Why Are Few Nigerians Studying Counselling Psychology by Pavore9: 4:15pm On Jul 22, 2018
With a population hovering around 200 million and presenting psychological issues leading to breakdowns, dysfunctionality and suicidal thoughts, there is dire need for counselling psychologists to offer talk therapy to help conceptualize the fixations one is going through and help develop skills to deal with them.

There is a limit to a religious leader's competence if he/she has no training in psychotherapy. We can't continue to sandpaper psychological issues with religion as it is not productive.

Back to my question, why are few Nigerians studying Counselling Psychology?

Mass Communication

Starting out with a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology should set you on the path to getting a Masters in Counseling psychology.

There is this psychotherapist, Chiadi Ndu the founder of BTH Therapy http://bththerapy.com/counsellor/ she is a lawyer but switched to acquiring her Masters in Counseling psychology alongside other certifications and now one of the notable psychotherapists in Nigeria. Her bill no be pure water money o but her therapy practice delivers.

PSY is not a straight course to pass, you need to apply logic and reasoning.

Thank God I stumbled on this thread. I studied medical radiography but I have a passion for counseling. Been wondering what to do but now I know. Got to do my masters in counseling psychology then ASAP.

But I also hope I could intern with some counseling organizations as I progress. Is that possible??

I'm currently studying psychology and I don't think I would venture into counseling psychology when I wanna do my masters. We all know Nigerians would rather go to churches or pastors rather than pay to be counselled by a psychologist. If you can give me proof of those actually making it in that, I might buy what you're selling...

There is no market for such a course as most people with psychological problems take it to church and to God

Do make sure your postgraduate studies is outside Nigeria.

I'd love that but I don't know how that can be worked out. I guess when that time comes, I'll cross that bridge.

Why the suggestion to study outside Nigeria; is it because of a lack of good learning here, or simply because of the prestige of a foreign degree?
I actually love your advice on this choice of career. It's a career I have always had a natural passion for, and one I know I could excel in.

I studied Econs Bsc and have found your suggestion useful on how to make the switch as stated above.

However, my only cold feet now is steming from your suggestion for overseas study leading to my questions above which I hope you provide answers to.

My cold feet is based largely on two factors:

1. Family: can't leave my family to study overseas for an extended period

2. Financial implications: A study abroad could cost a fortune.

I'll love to interact more with you on this subject if you don't mind.

Hello at Pavore9, I quoted you in a post above asking a couple of questions on this subject. While I still hope to hear from you on that, kindly suggest institutions perhaps in Kenya of any other country that offer post graduate studies in this field of study.

By the way I'll like to dm you directly. Having gone through your blogs and post on NL, I think you are somebody to work with on a host of things.

In Nigeria you can study at the Institute of Counselling and get a diploma while you train and then you can start counselling professionally and making money. www.truthshare.com.ng is a great place to start too. Although I think people have not started seeing counselling as a way out of their depression, so the demand for it is still very low compared to our population
