Many times IN the past I elaborated on why Nigeria CANNOT get 24/ power supply for each and every Nigerian and for every business. not in 6 months, not in 6 years. Maybe in 20 years if the relentless work start NOW and if not even one naira is embezzled.

To put it short, in my tiny European country of under 10 million people, we produce 8500 MW of energy at any given moment. Nigeria has some 20 times more people, and produces 40% (on average) of what we do. Simple math says that Nigeria has to increase the total power output by up to 50 TIMES. To put it in plain English, for every power plant Nigeria has today, it has to build 49 more power plants of the same size. And then, add to it the transmission (transformers, high tension lines, stations and sub-stations etc).

So, I doubt that any of us reading this today will see 24/7 power supply. Maybe our children will, but not us.

Then kick out these distributors. If oyinbo will give us steady power bring them in.

With all the oil and gas (Dubai powers on oil), Rivers and God given sunshine (solar cells are at it's cheapest ever!) We have no reason to wait for 5 years. We flare gas every single second!

Must we do our own revolution like Ghana and France?

your views here will not have any positive impact on the situation, but a change of the political drivers who so far have demonstrated that they are bereft of ideas on how to move the power sector forward will bring forth new people with new ideas.

CANDYDADDY:
The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, says that Nigeria may not have stable power supply in the next five years except the challenges confronting the sector are addressed.

Mr Sunday Oduntan, the Executive Director, Research and Advocacy of ANED disclosed this at a news conference in Lagos on Tuesday.

According to Oduntan, there are challenges inhibiting power sector efficiency and they include liquidity gap of N1.3 trillion, lack of improved generation due to mismatched electricity pricing.

“Lack of much needed investment in transmission and distribution network and rising energy theft among others.

“Except these challenges are addressed, we may not have stable power supply in the next five years,’’ he said.

Oduntan said that the illiquidity in the sector must be prioritised because the sector could not afford to collapse.

“If the power sector collapses, many banks will collapse because in 2013 during privatisation, only one Distribution Company obtained foreign loan, others took loans from local banks in dollars.

“Privatisation was based on 30 per cent equity and 70 percent loan.

“The model was borrowed from New Delhi, India and it is working as we speak. If it is successful in India, why is it not working in Nigeria,’’ he added.

Oduntan decried the prevalent non-reflective tariff and called on the government to prevail on the military, Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) to pay for energy consumed.

According to him, MDAs owe about N72 billion and the military has refused to pay since August 2017, when the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola say the Federal Government will settle all legacy debts by MDAs.

“Afterwards, nothing has been paid by the military.

“It is important to also state that the mismatch in electricity pricing has resulted into inability of the Discos to settle their obligations to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Traders (NBET).

“What we get from NBET is usually higher than what the Discos charge to consumers because we don’t have control over tariff.

“Government determines what we charge power consumers.

“Until we have a review of electricity tariff which ought to have been taken place every six months, there can’t be cost-reflective tariff and without cost reflective tariff, Discos can’t settle their debts to NBET.’’

On the controversies surrounding eligible customers’ policy, Oduntan argued that tariffs for industrial consumers were structured to be subsidised.

“The eligible customer policy will take the industrial customers off the Discos’ network and this will affect the revenue of the Discos.

“If the policy will take away the industrial customers from the Discos’ network, then, there must be a review of the tariff to guarantee liquidity in the sector,’’ he said.

the discos are economical with the truth, what the MDAs owed the discos as verified by FG is not up to amount being claimed by the discos and FG has informed them that the amount verified ( around 30 billion) has been deducted from money owed the Gencos. On the issue of tariff, the discos should have metered all their customers before seeking tariff increase because they can't premise bills based on estimation on ridiculous high tariffs, if everyone is metered people will know how to manage their electricity consumptions, they can't put the cart before the horse. On funding, the discos from inception has no requisite capital or standing to source for capital to invest in the expansive power distribution business as obsolete equipments begging for overhauling or complete replacement litters everywhere as some areas are having overloaded or bad transformers with attendant local power blackout for months and still getting bills for power not consumed in the name of estimation.
