It was April 1973, when Motorola engineer Marty Cooper, made the first ever call from a “real handheld portable cell phone” to his Rival at Bell Labs research firm, Joel Engel. Since that call four decades ago, mobile phones have evolved dramatically, getting smaller in size, lighter and amazingly smarter. From SMS to anytime Internet connectivity to mobile photography, cell phones have been the catalyst for cultural and technological changes over the past 45 years. Join us as we take you through the defining moments and trends of the mobile era.

Radio Common Carrier ( The 60’s )

It was introduced in the ’60s as a pre-cellular system. Like a radio, it could transmit voice communication through a push-to-talk system, but it used a public telephone network and had its own telephone number.

Motorola DynaTAC ( 1983-1990 )

On the 3rd of April 1973, using this device, Motorola researcher Martin Cooper made the first mobile telephone call to Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs. The DynaTAC 8000X was the first commercial mobile phone! Its initial price was a hefty $4,000. The phone went on sale in 1983 and the first mobile phone call in the UK was made in 1985. Michael Harrison called the chairman of Vodafone, and his father, Sir Ernest Harrison.

Orbitel TPU 900 ( 1991 )

GSM launched in Europe 1991. The Orbitel TPU 900 pictured above hit the market first. These phones were restricted to business use mostly probably due to it’s size, cost of production and consequently cost of purchase.

Nokia 1011 (1992 – 1994 )

In 1992, barely a year after the Orbitel TPU 900 hit the market, Mass production paved the way for cost-effective consumer handsets with digital displays. Nokia was one of the first to take advantage of this transition, with the Nokia 1011 arriving that year.

Siemens S10 ( 1995 – 1998 )

The Siemens S10 was the mobile phone that brought displays to life for the first time in 1997. Colours! Although it only offered four colours.

The same year Hagenuk launched the GlobalHandy, the first device without an external aerial.

Customisation also kicked off in a big way with Ericson offering swappable coloured front keyboard panels.

The following year Nokia launched a range of ‘Xpress-on’ interchangeable covers on the 5100 series, making it the first fashion orientated phone.

Nokia 7110 ( 1999 – 2002 )

In 1999, Nokia unveiled the 7110 which was the first device to take advantage of WAP (a means of accessing information over a mobile wireless network).

A year later Sharp launched the world’s very first camera phone, the J-SH04.

It was only available in Japan but signalled the start of the public’s obsession with phone photography.

However, it wasn’t until 2002 and the release of the Sony Ericsson T68i and its clip-on camera, that western markets started to take an interest in the camera phone.

Blackberry 8100 Pearl ( 2003 – 2006 )

Enter 3G which came along and took download speeds up to 2MBS in March 2003 with the network service provider “3” the first to offer the service in the UK. RIM (Research in motion ) brought mobile email to the masses with its range of popular BlackBerry devices like the 8100 Pearl.

This period also brought about the advent of front facing cameras on devices such as the Sony Ericsson Z1010 which meant video calling became possible, but not popular.
