Telephone etiquette means being respectful to the person you are talking with, showing consideration for the other person and allowing that person time to speak, communicating clearly and much more.
.
To have better call experience follow these tips:
.
1. When someone calls you, let them be the one to cut the call.
Most people, most especially ladies are fond of doing this. Sometimes the caller might want to still say something but out of anxiety the reciever quickly cut the call.
So when someone calls you, give them the benefit of cutting their call or better still wait 5 seconds if they do not cut it then you can. If you are the one calling hold on 2-3 seconds before cutting it.
.
2. Learn to answer your calls with positive tone and greetings like "Hi", "Hello", " Good afternoon". You can even wear a smile when a close acquaitance calls you.
.
3. Avoid talking too loud on the phone. The truth is that the phone is close to the receiver's ear and he or she should be able to hear you clearly when you speak moderately.
.
4. Don't pick calls in a noisy or loud environment.

First excuse yourself to somewhere very quiet before picking the call. In short learn to call or pick calls in a quiet environment.
.
5. Don't sound too fast on phone cause the person on the other end might find it hard hearing or understanding you. So learn to speak at normal rate while talking on the phone.
.
6. Always make room for the other person to talk.
Have recieved some calls that the other person never even give you chance to talk. They will be the one to talk from the beginning to the end. In short learn to pause for the other person to talk.
.
7. Do you know its not always good to answer the call on first ring, wait till second or third ring?
Reason is that most people don't expect the call to be picked at first ring so the caller might be taken off guard.
.
8. If the caller sounds rude, just stay positive by cutting the call.
.
9. Never pick another person's call except you are told to do so.
This is not only annoying but it often leads to unexpected outcomes. Besides I wonder what you intend to tell the caller.
.
10. Avoid picking calls with a joke or by saying something such as, "Talk to me!" or " who dey there?"
This is rude since sometimes you can't tell who might be calling you.
.
11. Give your undivided attention when talking on the phone.
it's not polite to answer your call and be doing or talking to something else.

Somewhat tangential to this is something I learned from Steli Efti's sales and marketing podcast. He learned a tool called HUCA - hang up and call again. It's a great tactic when talking to customer service representatives who deny your request for something, such as nullifying bank overdraft fees or airline cancellation fees. If you HUCA, you will most likely be talking to someone else who is more amenable to your request. The point is never give up!
