My Nationality Doesnt Grant Me Status To Claim Being African? by Carolece(f): 5:46am On Jun 19, 2010
So I have this friend from Niger. We always have discussions on whether or not I should class myself as an African. I oftentimes refer to myself as an African and he always correct me that I am not. Yet he refers to Americans as African Americans, also he oftentimes call me his sister, referring to me as "my sister".

I asked him why I shouldnt call myself such and he said just because I wasnt born to the Mother land. I said well, dont refer to the Americans as such because they were not born to the Mother Land either. He went on to telling me that they are different because thats what everyone know them as, yeah right.

Tell me what is your personal belief on this topic, please.

Afterall, you are what your parents are, and parents including foreparents which mine were taken from Africa and taken to the Caribbean. Hence, I will continue to embrace my Africanship.

Tell me please.

Whites, blacks. . . . We are all one. We hail from one parents Adam and eve. . . If not for babel we will be speaking same language and then there'll be no use for nationality and ethnic groups. . . My take in this is an African is an African. . . What's so special in including American in the African. . . Blacks hail from Africa and we all know the reason why some end up in America. . . They re not so different from us apart from their accent. . . We are all one. . .

Although I agree with some of ur post, I would beg to disagree with the bolded part. African Americans are def very different from Africans. And the accent is certainly a minor difference. The mentality is very different as is the behavior, the ambitions (or lack of), the lifestyle and all that. I am speaking in general of course. Now it is true that past the cultural and societal differences we are all fundamentally so similar in our aspirations, hopes, dreams and struggles as human beings.
@Poster, nothing wrong with claiming yours your African ancestry. Being african is a state of mind. You are what you believe you are and feel free to embrace it!

People always want to distinguish others, eg: African American, Native American, Mexican American etc etc
who care yeah undecided If I were you, I would pay deaf  ears to that friend of yours. Matter of the fact is that you are of
an African heritage.

Agreed. . . But I wasn't talking abt culture or way of live. I'm talking abt the fact that we are all humans and we basically want same thing. How we go abt it is different. . . I guess the accent stuff just came out wrong. . .

Are you cocksure about not having a white forefather somewhere in the tree? How? And why's being African so special anyway? Anyways, you are whoever you tell me you are. Satisfied? I am.

It honestly does not sound very authentic when a black American claims to be African. . . there just seems to be too much distance between an African and a black American. Not saying that you can't. It's just that for most people, such a claim is difficult to position, in the mind. It just doesn't settle.

My dear, if you have parents of African descent, then you are African. If you have parents that are Nigerians, you are Nigerian no matter where you born. Simple.

Wow. . . So since when did Nigerian become an ethnicity?
