You're an educator right? You just mentioned one point most people will miss. The child still needs time with kids of his agemate. He's gifted in an area but if he's really loved by his family, they'll ensure they provide an environment that'll build his emotional, social and psychological life. BTW, I hope Nigerian parents would look beyond making their children do what they (the parents) want.

I'm not an educator but I come from a family where there are lots of educators including one of my parents. Yes...you're right the kid still needs a lot of ample time to develop along with his own peers. If not his life will never be balanced no matter how genius or naturally talented he is and i believe his parents will never allow such happen to him.

This is not a one-off case. A lot like him exist in Nigeria, people whose brains suck in knowledge around them like sponges. It's a lack of opportunities and non enabling environment which hold them back.
If the government was serious they could tap into these individuals, their abilities will prove an invaluable resource.
I was gonna mention this. Dude got an extra ordinary IQ. His environment is a compliment. Intelligence is a combination of genetics, nutrition and environment. Genetics takes a larger percent.

It's not necessarily a combination of all three. One or more could play a part. Most times they are born randomly.

A man of average intellect with ten children and no way to find his next meal could produce one genius out of his lot. I read an article once about a slave born into a plantation, suffered the same dehumanization as his peers but still had an eidetic memory, capable of crunching numbers larger and faster than a modern day calculator.

A human can also read far and wide to become knowledegable. It is not genius per se but still qualifies nonetheless.

I disagree. Intelligence is a combination of the three: genetics- it is either recessive or dominant. It doesn't have to be your parents who have got th genes. Environment- some things we say and do shows intelligence because we are in an environment. This is why you see some schools are ivy league or some schools have standards. The standard is quality of environment. The environment also presents you with opportunities that help develop your intelligence. And finally, nutrition to help in brain development.

I can see a lot of people here either consoling themselves or giving themselves hope. Get over yourselves people. The boy is an outlier, and that's what it is.

No amount of grooming or 'conducive environment' can make you an outlier. They come one in a million, and the talent would shine through regardless of environment.

You want to argue what is indefensible. IBM is a business entity. The problems they're solving are not Software problems but Business problems. And if you lack a thorough understanding of that problem, what are you going to solve?

What are you even saying? The kid says he learnt how to code at age 5. Not solve world problems and Skills are earned through learning. Talent is what comes naturally. If the kid can display such skill at that tender age, then he has the natural talent to be proficient with the skills.

NB: The problems i referred to in the earlier post are not what 5 year olds will just wake up one morning and say they want to solve.

Again, for the teens who dropped out of school, did they ever imply they stopped learning and relearning?
Citing your own example even; Do you know that Bill Gates & Zuckerberg on average still read no less than 50 - 60 new books on different subjects every year?

Now that's how you keep up with education that not attending all the best institutions wouldn't have afforded.

Genetic doesn't mean any of his parents or ancestors must be a genius. It simply means they have the genes that favor intelligence, whether they go on to achieve this high intelligence is another thing totally.

It's why I say they don't all need to mix. One or the other could create a genius equally. The man with ten children could live in a Kenyan slum where they feed on cassava flour [garri] and corn starch to sustain life yet his son is a genius capable of competing with bright minds around the world. The example negates environment, proper nutrition but likely supports the genetics factor.
A slave plantation if history books serve me right, didn't serve world class nutritious meals or have an enabling environment for slaves to boost creativity and knowledge [black people were verboten from education] yet it created the genius I read about, another case of probably only genetics.

bro, IBM has several departments. The little 14 year old software genius will not be placed in the business solving department. He will be in the department where software engineering-coding-programming is done. you do know IBM makes computers right ? and why are we talking about IBM, they say the kid works for google.

and if you are curious I can show you several teenage boys on youtube who can program anything you tell them to. geniuses who are like 13 year olds making all kinds of apps and complicated computer software systems and robotics. this type of skill you are born with. its like 5 year olds who can play the pianos like maestros. its a spiritual configuration they are endowed with from birth

This makes sense and supports what I originally thought, the randomness of averagely intelligent people birthing geniuses out of the blue.

Unfortunately, this generation of materialism are only looking at the money the young man is being paid without looking at the bigger picture of his contribution to IBM as a company.
Let's learn to develop the ability to solve problems without looking at the monetary side if it, this is the reason why white people excel in what they do.
They do it for the name of benefiting others not for the money. Sadly, not so in Nigeria that everything good is centred around money.
And as for those comparing yourself to this guy it is real somewhat not knowing what life is about.
One thing you should all learn in this life is, no two people are the same, no matter the school or similari IQ capacity.
we all have our different paths to pursue.

Google or IBM - What's the difference? One thing we all know is they're both solving serious challenges and none of those challenges are caused by Software issues. Rather Software is the tool they're using to solve the real issues. And at the heart of those challenges is the one that is "Business driven" because they are profit making organizations.

Oh please! You just love to beat a dead logjam and you're quite ridiculous. So you think i just heard of YouTube today? And Quora has something to look at:

I find it so silly and irritating when I see fascination towards any youngster and their early achievements. Agreed what Tanmay Bakshi has accomplished at his age is commendable. And I am pretty sure 99% of us haven’t done anything even remotely close to what he has done.

Great.
Applause Applause.
Respect.

However, life is not limited to being a 15 year old kid. The realities of life that come along as you grow up are far more varied and challenging. Have you forgotten what happened to Macaulay Culkin, Edward Furlong & Lindsay Lohan? Fame, Money, Success early on in life can be a double edged sword for many.

Now the young Tanmay Bakshi is young. Fine. As he grows up he will be introduced to girls, alcohol, sex, drugs, access to money, freedom and life. He will get introduced to emotional, physical, mental and political challenges of life. And most importantly - he will be introduced to new competition which may not necessarily be fair.

So how would he handle all this - that is the bigger question.

I for one am totally unimpressed with all this Rah-Rah that the general public gets into whenever they see anyone getting global recognition. Most of these ‘greats’ are one-hit-wonders and then they vanish into nothingness.

I would be more keen and interested how exceptional and great this young lad does when he is in his 40’s. Would be become the next Bill Gates or would he end up being a Middle Aged man happily married to a woman with 3 kids - focusing on making life happen for him and his family - that is what to be seen.

I do not wish anything bad for him - but to me Success is a Marathon of One Million Miles where Consistency, Committment & Character is tested over the period of time again and again and again. Success to me is not a short 100 meters sprint which finished in a few seconds and now you have a big shiny medal and now your name is Splashed all over the Internet.

Remind me in 20 years what he is up to.

Loy Machedo

you dont understand what you are talking about. in companies they have people who have the vision of where the company is going and how to drive it forward. these are the business managers. and then they have the IT guys who are not concerned about where the company is going or what the companies goals are. there job is simply to create applications as directed to them. this is where the 14 year old will be. why is that hard for you to grasp ? have you worked in an american company before ? they have division of labor and each person plays his role. it is not the job of the IT guys to solve the serious challenges of the company. they are simply there to code and program and create software applications. can you understand this concept ? or are you just so used to nigerian companies that you cant comprehend how things are done in america ? and in case you are confused here is a day in the life of a software engineer. they have no contact with management. they are not in managerial roles.
