Norway authorities are set to prescribe free heroin to drug addicts in a bid to improve their living conditions.
The government announced yesterday that the most critical addicts will be given the drug in the trial programme, which could start by 2020.

The country, which recorded the highest deadly drug overdose rates in Europe is hoping that the scheme will benefit up to 400 addicts.

The Norwegian Directorate for Health and Social Affairs has been charged with proposing an experimental project to identify patients likely to benefit from the programme, to evaluate the implementation method, and to calculate the costs.

Health Minister Bente Hoie stated:
‘We hope that this will provide a solution that will improve the quality of life to some addicts who are out of our reach today and whom current programmes do not help enough.’
