@frankiriri, calls after midnight are only within network so they can afford to make it free since there's no interconnect charges involved.

and am Sure you hold that against celtel to make it only on- net.

and that is goin to be a reason why the whole thing will not make Sense right?

you want calls during the day to be free right?
welldone! grin

I dont do midnight calls. But If I understand their happy hour package , their version does not restrict you to on-net calls which means they would still have to pay the 30k/s to MTN and Glofor calls terminating on their networks. So the amounts they charge their on-net customers would subsidise the cost.
Any body that is too pained can just get the other lines and use them whenever you need to make free calls.
AS for me , I recognise the need for CELTEL to make their pay. If I were a shareholder I definitely wouldn't support any policy that would reduce earnings grin

Well, you are right. But I just feel that this Celtel unity tariff is just not as effective in helping them attract new subscribers like MTN extracool and glo classic plus. I remember MTN were once labeled as a "Milk Those Nigerians" until they decided to crash tariffs when they realized that the GSM market in Nigeria has changed significantly. The market is changing because the upper end (now saturated) which are made up of professionals and working class all have lines and are already loyal to their networks since they wont want to change their numbers. The only section in the market that is now growing is the lower end which is made up of people within the ages of 14 - 21 whom are new university students, secondary school grads and others whom are just purchasing their first phone. What these guys will be looking at are fun things like MTN extracool that offers free midnight since they can afford to stay awake all night. Mind you, these group of people will still grow up, graduate and become professionals in future thereby increasing their networth and average spend with time. Celtel doesn't really understand the Nigerian market yet, that's why they don't know what to do. Glo has also been more successful by surpassing celtel because they were the first to use the youth segment formula to attract a young generation of subscribers which is actually the only growing segment now.

No part of the Market is Saturated at all. There ave 12Om Nigerians and not up to 35m use gsm So U are Saying the over 9Om are low ends?

anyway I would not say that because Of Competition one should lose money doing what already established competition is doIng.

you must apease subs as well as make profit for e+pansion

There has been 50% increase in ceItel Sub base Sine- Oct So I guess they ok so far

Read well my friend, I said the upper class end was saturated because you and I know that there is limited growth there unless you wanna switch from one network to the other. The bulk of new untapped subscribers are the youths. Why do you think MTN has extended beyond 0806 to 0703?

I presently work in a bank and I know that all the networks have special packages to entice people with big spend. Forget all the populist free call moves. Most of those people could bloody well jump into the lagoon for all the networks care. Without the present big spend who is ready to wait for the free surfers. Vmobile had the tag of being the most freindly netwok for a long time yet they were a distant 3rd. So whether or not they introduce freebies would not affect their performance.

@ franKiri

Re: Celtel's Unity Tariff Is Deceptive! by drogba(m): 8:40pm On May 09, 2007
Celtel's growth rate is still lagging behind the top two
Re: Celtel's Unity Tariff Is Deceptive! by cabali(m): 11:05pm On May 09, 2007
Thing is. there is still growth.

I don't Know if you guys Know a thinyabont business at all.

how can celtel do freebies as other networks when as important as coverage is Suffering. they must run slow so as to gather as much for expansion and 'at the rate they are or. Stats prove that they are on track as there is growth going on

I Know Nigerians want free calls during the day before theyiviu be satisfied with Celtel but am Sure if they were running the business, it would be different
Re: Celtel's Unity Tariff Is Deceptive! by drogba(m): 5:54am On May 10, 2007
No one is saying they want free call by force. All I have to do is ask my closest contact to get an MTN line if I want to call them free. What we are saying is that the unity tariff doesn't help Celtel subscribers to save money on on-net calls which do not require interconnect charges and should logically be cheaper. Besides, why do I have to wait till 10pm on a saturday and sunday for off-peak when other networks regard all day saturday and sunday as off-peak. The only thing I can credit celtel for is GPRS which is very cheap, reliable and stable. I have all 3 lines in each individual seperate handsets and have never used my celtel to make a call even after the announcement of the new rates because it smells like a rip off and doesn't pay me unlike the deals I get from MTN and glo on-net. i agree that celtel is trying to carve a niche for itself and remain profitable, but always remember that competitiveness is also a thing of consideration in any business. remember that glo would have easily surpassed MTN if they (MTN) did not make the painful decision to drop tariffs and utilize unused capacity at night to retain and build a strong customer base in the growing section of the market.

u r still making comparisons with letter and others.

when will you understand that they are not on the same level. Celtel has to make more revenue now to grow in expansion

while you are getting bothered, Stats Prove an increase in growth in celtel Subscriber base within the past month which is when the Unity tariffs came to effect.

So u can Keep enjoying Or other lines while those who have still Chosen celtel over the Others Should be allowed to Continue enjoying their choice

I stick with celtel cos they are the most accesible In terms of customer attention

Celtel is even the onost talked about on the phones section of this land
