Once you don’t have the right communication styles in your toolbox, believe me, leadership is a nightmare. of course, your followers or subordinate will definitely fear you, but the respect will not be there. Therefore, this content will be more about the communication styles that should be in every leaders’ toolbox.

With the right communication skill, you can achieve more, lead well and motivate your team for a better performance. As a matter of fact, communication is the most powerful tool of every successful leader.

Great leaders like Nelson Mandela, George Washington, Mao Zedong, Adolf Hitler, Abraham Lincoln, Julius Caesar all have one thing in common – Great communication skills and this is why you need to master the art of communication as a leader.

6 Communication Styles That Should Be In Every Leaders’ Toolbox

Listening

Listening is one of the communication styles that should be in every leaders’ toolbox. A good leader must master the art of listening. He should be able to listen to what his team are saying and what they aren’t saying.

Once you listen very passionately to what your subordinate or team have to say, you can uncover their unspeakable challenges and frustrations. The good thing with listening is that it gives you the necessary information to evaluate the situation at hand.

Coaching

As a leader, you should be able to teach your team a new set of skills. Instead of constantly scolding your subordinate, learn to advise them and guide them properly.

Identify the team members that are performing poorly and put them on the right path. With this, you will be creating a great impact while earning their respect. Successful leaders are great coaches that are passionate about guiding others to achieve their goals.

Teaching

Teaching is also among the communication styles that should be in every leaders’ toolbox. As a leader, whenever you see someone struggling with a particular team, try to teach them.

Whenever a leader is teaching his subordinate, he should always explain while the skills he is teaching them will be beneficial to them.

Directing

It is your job as a leader to direct your team. In other words, you have to spell out strategies that will help achieve the task at hand. When directing, you have to be very careful and choose your words wisely. Otherwise, you may be dictating unconsciously.

Therefore, instead of giving orders, provide frameworks. As a rule, leaders should only consider dictating as a last resort. Especially, when directing isn’t producing the desired result.

Advising

Every leader must learn to be in an advisory mode. In other words, you should be able to advise your team of different situations. When issues are complicated, clarify them, provide solutions to their problem and more importantly, help them clear misconception.

Your advice should always help your team to overcome difficulties when the going gets tough.

Motivating

Motivation is among the most important communication styles that should be in every leaders’ toolbox. There are instances when the going gets tough, this is when you need to motivate them.

You should be able to encourage your team and make them put in their best. According to experts, the best way a leader can motivate his team is to work alongside with them to overcome challenging tasks.

Furthermore, try to know the motivation style that works best for your team and apply accordingly.

In trying times, teaching, directing and motivating are the best communication style to apply.

These are the communication styles that should be in every leaders’ toolbox.

Going by the styles of communication mentioned, Buhari has failed as far as communicating with the citizens is concerned. He doesn't coach, he doesn't listen(he said he's unaware) ,he doesn't motivate (he said youth are lazy), he doesn't advise, he doesn't direct.

Once a leader fails at the word level he will fail in every other way. Because the first thing is the word. You must be able to speak to your people, communicate your vision to them, inspire them and move the country in the direction of its highest potential.

It is not for nothing Americans ensure that they vote men who are worded from Washington to Trump - all worded men.

All above listed points seem so easy but they actually aren't especially when you have naturally stubborn / unnecessarily jealous subordinates.
And when it comes to the end of the day after they are burnt out from giving so much who do leaders turn to for help/ advice and coaching??
