Well, i am not saying it is not possible but i do not see it happening if you were in the right frame of mind while making the transaction. i am only going to ask some questions
1. were you the person who made the transfer or a third party?
2. Did you make cash deposit? If you made the cash deposit via the bank, the cashier has to be blamed for not cross-checking that the account number tallies with the recipient's name. He/She ought to have notified you in case of any error
3. If you used mobile banking or USSD code, you should have seen the recipient's name before confirming the transfer. In that case, you are on your on till you get mercy.

In any case, contact your bank or better still, know your account officer. He/She should be able to give you the best advice.

It has happened to me before. I called the customer care immediately. He cross checked my account, asked me some questions, then told me not to worry that I'd get my money back within 24hrs. I got alert in less than 24hrs.

Your bank will tell you that they can't deduct recipient money.

Just go to the nearest of the bank branch that received the money and tell manager to Put No Withdrawal Order to the recipient account. This method works better if you sense fraud or illegality or if the amount is huge. Or call your account officer, immediately, you can also use ATM or apps to file your complaint.

I had this experience some few months ago when I mistakenly transferred some funds to a wrong recipient's account. Out confusion, I aimed for the sitting room but found myself opening the door to the kitchen store.

After recovering from arguably my worst shock ever, I immediately called the WRB and lodge a complaint .

The lady verified my transaction details as I requested a LIEN on that amount. I called my bank for an official request to be sent to the WRB.

After much back and forth, with lots of airtime exhausted on calls, I was able to get in touch with the guy who assured me of making a refund once he's been allowed to have access to the fund.

I went to my bank and made a written instruction to have the LIEN lifted off that amount. They did and I had a refund from the good guy. Though I parted with some amount which he strongly initially rejected but I insisted he take some for being a rear-hearted kind of a guy.

I just got clarifications now from a banker friend. It is obvious I misunderstood the implications of the CBN directive. It turns out the reversal is only applicable to wrong fund posting by the bank ie its staff, not a customer. In the past, if a bank staff mistakenly credits your account while on duty, he either had to pay for that from his own pocket, beg you to refund him or lose his job. Now with this directive, he can immediately debit your account for that fund without needing your permission.

I am sorry for the wrong info I posted. I would take it down, kindly take down the one you quoted too. Thanks.

What if the money had been withdrawn?

If the money has been withdrawn, the account would be placed on PND which means post no debit.

The account holder can only deposit money into the account but won't b able to withdraw #1.

My advice to the OP.

Go to court, u don't need the service of a lawyer, just some sort of affidavit costing less than #500, take it to ur bank, your bank will contact the beneficiary or they either place his Account on lien or PND.

Depending on the bank and the customer care representative that attends to you, the money could be reversed. Last week I had a bit of an issue with a transaction and Diamond Bank Rep asked if she should initiate a reversal and I said no.
They can do it.
But sending money to the wrong account means you're not a meticulous person.
Before you send money double or triple check. I can't make such mistake.

I hope you'll remember this your judgemental comment when it happens to you. It has never happened to me but I know no one is infallible.

A friend of mine missed a digit in his account number, unfortunately the person sending the money din’t verify the account number, he just transferred the money straight into the wrong account. When he realized the mistake, he went to bank to lodge a complain, the money was traced and the number was called unfortunately the lines weren’t reachable. The account was flagged. Meaning he can’t do anything on his account unless he enters the banking hall. Further probing on the account revealed that it’s been years that the account was last used. Maybe the person his even dead (no one knows).

As it stands now, the money is chilling in the wrong account as of this morning. This happened over a month ago.

Just pray you don’t make some mistake, cos if you do, O.Y.O. is your case.

Last time I checked, your bank doesn’t have any right to remove a kobo from your account except for all those their useless bank charges. You just have to beg the person to please refund.

if you call your bank there's an interbank relationship such that your bankers contact the bankers of the person you credited erroneously. What the bankers of the person you credited wrongly is they put is account on no Debit meaning no withdrawals and they call him to write a letter signed by him to debit is account if not he risks his BVN been watchlisted.

That you don't know doesn't mean there isn't that's why CBN mandated in 2014 or so that every bank must have an E-fraud unit to deal with situation such as this.

I believe I'm in good position to answer this question.

First, no one including banks have rights or power to freeze or place a lien on anybodys account no matter what happened EXCEPT an order of court.

If you have mistakenly sent money to another person, you have only two options

1. Call the person and plead for refund. If he refuses, then, you have last option

2. Get a lawyer and proceed to court and get an Ex parte motion granting you the order to freeze the account. After which, you approach the same court for an order to reverse the funds.


If banks have in anywhere freeze your account without court order, sue them to court and claim damages.

The issue is very simple. Get a lawyer and obtain a court order. It won't take more than 48 hours to do all these

When funds are wrongly transferred to a wrong account, the best step to take is to visit the closest branch of your bank, and lodge a ''written'' complain at the customer service section and make sure there is a follow up of the complaint immediately. The bank on their part won't be able to initiate a reversal of the said fund immediately, cos the bank themselves already has two customers interest to protect, yours and the said customer who receive the funds. Why the bank takes this decision is because if they reverse immediately the said customer can sue the bank, that the fund reversed was actually his from a business transaction which the said customer can defend with proof. So to create a safe landing, if the fund is still in the account or the said fund has already been withdrawn, the bank will place an immediate lieu of the said amount on the account, pending the outcome of the investigation. If after thorough investigation , the ball falls on your court, you will get a reversal in no distant time.

I concur, had very similar case some months. It was resolved just last week, it takes time, energy and extra money to follow up. It requires lots of patience

Went to the bank (Gtbank ) to asked what can be done about the situation and they made us to understand, nothing can be done.

If This Is True, You Can Sue The Bank. No Bank Has The Power To Withdraw Money From Your Acct Without Your Permission.
