Nollywood Actress Yvoone Jegede has pen down a thought provoking epistle on why the use of social media is causing more harm than good

The actress who posted on her instagram page made several emphasis on Kenya Wes Tweet where he claimed that there are a lot of people committing suicide due to social media likes

According to Jegede ''Social media has been a beautiful platform but we use it for the purpose of accepting counterfeits/mediocracies as long as the metrics look good''

She wrote
I know some people had their baggage before the social media era, but I strongly believe it has not made it any easier.
I vividly remember a friend (filmmaker) called me to ask for my opinion for a lead character for an upcoming movie, after giving some options, a name which “we” both agreed who would have done the best job was turned down because...and I quote “He doesn’t have many Instagram followers.” With the utmost confusion I asked “what about the stellar performance he’s going to bring to your movie?”... My friend replied, “ I want someone who will reach a larger audience when I start promoting the film”.. As a filmmaker and a business woman I saw sense in that but it didn’t stop me from thinking, “someone just lost a chance because of mere online figures”. Social media has been a beautiful platform but we use it for the purpose of accepting counterfeits/mediocracies as long as the metrics look good.
That been said, focus on yourself to be the best version of you and what is yours will come in due time. Nobody and no figure should define you but how you feel inside.

Seeking approval in form of likes on social media in itself is not bad owing to the fact that human beings are social creatures who are always keen to getting approval from others. But when one prioritise "likes" to the extent that one's whole life depend on it,That is when it becomes a conundrum. It is referred to as social media anxiety disorder(SMAD).It is what is affecting most social media users today. They get tensed up over not get enough likes on the photographs, profile pics or comments they post on social media to the extent that it begins to affect their social and physical wellbeing.Mood change when you don't get the desired likes on stuffs you post and also becoming oblivious to one's surrounding or losing touch with reality as a result of social media usage is indicative of SMAD.
The story she told about that young man who was denied a movie role because of mere online figures brings to mind folks like bobrisky and most of our yeyebrities who bag endorsement deals not because they are qualified for it.But because of their popularity of which the size of social media followership is indicative. That is how nigerians keep on celebrating mediocre people just because they are popular.
