A 22 year old butcher, Abubakar Kabiru, who resides in the Loncon Cinci area of Maiduguri was yesterday sentenced to death by hanging by Maiduguri High Court for killing his friend, Lawali Zaraye.
Kabiru, according to witnesses, stabbed the deceased at the back during a fight over N700 which he said Lawali owed him.
Babagana Shetimma, a witness, had earlier told the court that he was in the company of his friend, one Alhaji Bukar Mustapha at the Abbartoir market in Maiduguri where he went to buy meat when they saw Kabiru and Zaraye quarrelling.
He added that when he and his friend tried to apprehend the accused, he equally stabbed him on his wrist. Another witness who is a brother of the deceased told the court that despite several appeals by his late brother to Kabiru that he would pay the debt after the day’s sales, the accused went ahead to kill him. He was said to have committed the offence on October 25, 2006 and he was charged for culpable homicide, an offence punishable by death under Section 221(b) of the penal code.
The presiding judge, Justice Abdullahi Sanya Yerima, heard that the accused was guilty as charged under Section 221(b) of the penal code and thereby sentenced him to death by hanging.
