If you travel within the Southwest part of Nigeria, you will be embarrassed at the number of police checkpoints on the road. These policemen collect at least 40 Naira from commercial drivers every single day.

I know that it has gradually become a norm in Nigeria. However, I am bothered for a few reasons:

1. The number of checkpoints (or bribe points) keeps increasing- there are more than 20 on Lagos-Ibadan expressway alone and the drivers have to pay all of them.
2. You can't question these policemen. They will just delay the driver (and passengers) under the guise of some inexistent legal misconduct.
3. The policemen are getting more bold by the day. When they started, they used to collect the money in secret. Now, they collect right in everyone's presence (and even give change when necessary!)
4. The policemen have been known to shoot at times if some drivers tried to escape.
5. Finally and most unfortunately, Nigerians are so used to it that nobody is bothered anymore. Passengers even encourage the drivers to 'pay their dues' on time so that they won't be delayed. The government and Police chiefs are aware but they prefer to just turn a blind eye- they are doing worse in their own offices anyway.

Nigerians, I find it really depressing. What can we do? cry cry cry cry cry cry
