Having opened its 25th Nigerian store just a few months ago, Africa’s largest grocery retail chain has revealed that it will not be opening any more outlets in the country for the time being.

According to Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht, “We had to impair four loss-making stores in Nigeria… we have slowed down in terms of our expansion until we get better clarity in terms of banned products and foreign exchange fluctuations.” He added that the chain’s Nigerian supermarkets were currently only carrying “half of our ranges because of the products banned.” The products affected by import bans include rice, flour and frozen meat.

There are two main factors behind these restrictions on imports – a shortage of foreign currency and a desire to boost domestic food production. But with domestic production unable to meet demand, smuggling is flourishing and the prices of staple foods are rising, according to local media reports.

Anyone buying fruits and meats from shoprite get mind.

Preservatives and I suspect most of their perishables are GMO.

I still have my reservations about GMOs.

Instead of the Whitewalker in aso rock to turn his people's energy towards producing meat to meet ShopRite demand, he prefers to support them in their quest to exterminate the people of the middle belt.

Nigeria is always missing out on opportunity.

Send the bagga back to Daura.

But he has done nothing to salve the situation. Do you know how rich and resourceful the fulanis would be if they were really business savvy and educated? BUHARI being a champion, if he was someone that loves education and enlightenment, the fulanis would tow his path.

Shoprite is one of the best thing to happen to shoppers in Nigeria as it saves us from fake products often sold in the traditional Nigerian market.

There is no solution to food security....GMO is the answer!

I don't know what your concerns are, but look at the developed countries of the world...can USA, for example, satisfy her population food needs without GMO The answer is NO. Nigeria should embrace GMO...Biotechnology at large

Whenever I consider how shoprite seems to monopolize the Nigerian mega store department and how we go crazy for shoprite, I understand how we're light years behind the west.
Every locale has a mega store which sometimes are bigger than shoprite, and they're thriving well. Ironically, we are more populous than they are.

By the comments I have read above, it is obvious that most people on this forum are very dull. So bcoz a foreign owned supermarket complains about lack of goods which have been banned in your country so as to boost local productions.. you are all here bashing your president.
I pray sense falls on y'all. Senseless youths.
