She opened her handbag and brought out the results of the medical tests.

He took it from her and opened it gingerly. His eyes popped out in surprise.

‘What? You're pregnant?'

She nodded without saying a word.

'What a surprise! So, you've been planning marriage without my knowledge. Tell me, who is the lucky man that got you pregnant?'

Ada smiled broadly at him. 'You really want me to tell you the lucky man?'

'Of course.'

She allowed a brief silence. 'You're the man responsible for my pregnancy, dear. You're the lucky man.'

For about three seconds, he did not say anything, then he burst out laughing. So, he could laugh over it, right? Ada was bemused. We shall see who would laugh last, she thought.

'No, no, no, Ada. You can't be serious,' he said after the mirthless laughter.

'Yes, yes, yes, dear, I'm serious,' she replied. There was another pause. He studied her countenance critically as if trying to discern guile. He
found none.

'Alright. Let us assume I'm indeed responsible for the pregnancy, what's the next thing to do now?'

Ada breathed out audibly. 'We're not assuming, you're indeed responsible. On the question concerning the next thing to do, that's the question I expected you to ask. Well, the answer is simple. The next thing to do is to see my family so that we can start planning all the formalities.'

Bayo's mouth opened in wonderment.

'What formalities are you talking about?'

'You should know now. The one concerning introduction, engagement, and proper wedding.'

Just then, Sandra Ajebo, the secretary, a woman sometimes given to gossips, came in.

'Sorry to interrupt. Chief Molokwu called to confirm that the appointment for tomorrow remains as scheduled,' she said. She handed over the file she was holding.

He took the file and quickly went through it. The conversation between him and Ada was suspended at that very moment.

'His papers and correspondence are inside the file,' Sandra explained.

'Alright.' He put the file on the table. 'You can go.'

They were alone again.

'Now, let's stop the drama. I will give you the money. Before the end of the week, go and get rid of it.'

Ada stood up, looking agitated. 'Are you suggesting I should go and abort the pregnancy?'

He looked exasperated. 'What other thing do you think I'm saying? And I'm not suggesting. I am giving you the directive to do so.'

'I'm sorry, I can't do that.'

'You can. You have to. There's no other choice.'

She shook her head and took her handbag. Without saying anything further, she turned to go.

'I will transfer fifty thousand naira into your account,' he was saying. 'That should take care of it.'

She did not say anything. He watched as she left his office. His mind was in a frenzy. She must be joking, he thought. How could she be taking about marriage? Had she forgotten that he was married? Of course Ada must be kidding.

Maggie noticed that in the last three weeks or so, Femi had been coming late from work. He attributed it to having much work to do. There was a lot to publish now, he had said. He would come in by nine or ten in the night. This was unlike before when he would be at home by seven-thirty latest.

She also noticed that there were times he would receive calls and he would leave her vicinity, complaining of poor network. She was trying not to believe it, but her mind kept saying the re-emergence of Sade in his life had serious links with his recent behavior.

Today, it was already nine in the night and he had not come. On an impulse, she decided to call Lola, his secretary. At the second ring, Lola picked the call

'Hello ma'am, good evening ma'am,' Lola greeted over the line. She had always been very courteous to the wife of her boss.

'Good evening, sister Lola. How is everything?'

'Fine, madam. How's family?'

'We are fine, thank you. What time are you closing today?'

'We've already closed, madam. I'm at home.'

'Really? What time did you close?'

'We closed at the normal time. Four o'clock.' Then she quickly added: 'Hope no problem, madam.'

'No, no problem at all. My regards to your family.'

That was it. It was not his work that had been making Femi come home late. It definitely was something else. Viewing everything calmly,
Maggie was determined to find out what it was.

Eneh made some far-reaching decisions concerning the matter in her family. Apart from Hadiza, she decided she would not discuss her
husband"s matter with any one. She would not also discuss it with her own family members. She could imagine what her mother would say.

'What're you still doing in his house? How could he deceive you into marrying him? How can you remain in the house of a man who is not a
real man?' That would likely be how mama would react. Eneh did not want such a response.

However, Eneh was not living in a fool's paradise. She knew there was a big problem on her hand. She must be ready to endure and
persevere. She believed that this was one challenge in which she would need to put her faith into action. It was not going to be easy, but they - she and her husband - must prevail.

She outlined the fasting and prayers program they would embark on. The first phase would be for twenty-one days. The breaking period would be from 6.00 pm till midnight. After that, a longer period would follow. This prayer warfare would continue until something positive happened.

Martin listened without saying a word as she briefed him on the programme. He was pleasantly surprised by how meticulous she was. He did not really fancy fasting, but he dared not say a word

He would have to try what she planned out. Indeed, he marveled at her zeal, determination and faith. What a wife! Martin thought he was very lucky. God Himself must have prepared Eneh as his wife.

Conscious of his predicament, he had, before meeting his wife, always shunned being too intimate with the opposite sex. He had a nasty experience during his national youth service year. After his university education at Bayero University, Kano, he was posted to Osun state for the NYSC. He had met Kokoeka, a fellow corps member at his place of primary assignment which was a secondary school at Ede. He and Koko became really intimate.

One night, she had pitched her tent with him, refusing to go to her room which was in another part of the school compound. He had shrugged
it off. To drive home her reason for staying back, she had asked him to help her scratch her back. Unabashed, she had removed the skimpy top
she was wearing, leaving only the bra. He stared in her semi-topless state and the apparent coquettish posture and felt nothing. To Martin, she
might as well be a moving statute.

But he had obliged to 'scratch' the back. She became nonplussed when he made no move to do anything she expected thereafter. Was he
too shy or too reserved? she wondered. In a most audacious move, her hand zipped down his trousers and rummaged through his boxer short!

He had cringed away from her, like a boy who was unnerved and distressed by a naughty person.

What she felt was enough to be unsettled about him.

'Are you okay?' she had asked, sarcastically. 'Why is everything down there cold and limp? And why are you acting as if a woman means
nothing to you.?'

'I... I'm ...not in the mood,' he had managed to say.

'Not in the mood, indeed,' she spat at him. Martin had been too embarrassed to say anything further.

In disappointment and anger, she had stormed out of his room that very night. Till date, any time he had a recollection of that incident, the feeling of shame and embarrassment would come to him all over again.

In disappointment and anger, she had stormed out of his room that very night. Till date, any time he had a recollection of that incident, the feeling of shame and embarrassment would come to him all over again.

After that incident, he steered off women for a long time. Along the line, the issue of getting married had become a poignant one. He was at a cross-road. To buy time, he would start a relationship and would opt out of it whenever it was becoming deep, giving one excuse or the other about incompatibility. Some of those ladies had pleaded with him to have a change of mind. In a reaction no less outlandish, he too had pleaded with them to go, pointing out that he had the conviction that the relationship would not work out. His friends suspected that something was wrong somewhere, but it was more of a supposition. The only thing they could do was for some of them to throw jibes at him. That continued until he met Eneh, the beautiful one with a beautiful heart.

It had been one of his colleagues that urged him to take Eneh as wife. Martin was reluctant. She was young, affable and easy going. She also seemed to be vivacious. A person like that might make too much of demand and might not tolerate his perennial abstinence for one week, he had reasoned.

Abdulfatah, one of his friends and colleagues, pressed him on to go for her.

'Go for gold,' Abdulfatah had said, grinning and urging him. When Martin finally agreed to ask the young lady out, he was relieved that this one would never be as brash as Koko. She was cool and reserved. She also seemed to be deeply religious. Even after getting the assurance that he had never married before, Eneh took her time to pray to God about him. She only said yes to Martin after she had got divine assurance that he was the right man for her.

Her religious stand gingered him. Martin had not seen a genuine Christian lady like her before. When she mooted no sex until marriage, he gladly accepted. She had thought he would dissent but he had played along. Then, anytime they were together, he did not for once indicate that he would buckle under the 'yoke' of abstinence. He had not - directly or discreetly - asked for sex. Rather, through out the courtship, he showered so much love, care and affection for her. He wanted her to be his wife; and to continue to be, even if the worst scenario of her getting pregnancy from an outsider should be the case_

It was exactly ten minutes after ten in the evening when Femi stepped inside his apartment. The children were already in bed while Maggie alone sat in the sitting-room, watching Dove television channel on cable.

'Hello, darling,' he greeted, coming over to give a peck.

She answered warmly.

'You must be very tired from work,' she put in. Though many things were agitating her mind, she had decided to take things calmly. There would be no need for her to be confrontational or be hysteric.

'You bet the work is much,' he adduced. Maggie nodded as if she knew. He made for the bedroom to change. Afterwards, he showered and changed into pajamas. He only ate sparingly, saying - as usual - that he had taken some snacks at the office. After she had cleared the plates, they retired to their bedroom.

He stretched on the bed. 'Ah, the work is tedious. Maybe I should get extra hands'. She was by his side, listening to him and waiting for the moment when she would ask him. He went on to explain how a persistently erratic internet network slowed their work on the on line writing and editing.

Maggie was sad. She shook her head. So her husband could lie like this! How many other things had he been saying that were lies? How many other lies?

He noticed that she was not saying anything.

'And you, how was your day today? How are the kids?'

'Fine. Everything is fine. The kids are doing great too.'

'Good. We give thanks to God.'

'Yes, we must always give thanks to God.'

He nodded in agreement.

'Darling, I want to ask you something,' she went on. 'Do you promise to tell me the truth?'

'Of course, I always tell you the truth.'

She nodded too.

'I hope you'll fulfill your promise. The question is simple.' She paused to look at him straight in the eye. 'Where exactly did you go between the time you closed at work and when you came to the house?'

He blinked rapidly and looked away. What she asked was the last question he expected her to ask.

'What... What are you saying?' he stuttered.

She was intent in her look. 'Just try to answer that question truthfully.'

'So...you don't trust me,' he said heatedly. 'If I tell you that I'm working late due to much work, why can't you believe that?'

'There's one reason why I don't believe. It's because you're not saying the truth. You're not saying the truth, are you?'

'How can you say that?'

'As at 4.30 pm, you were not in the office.'

'Were you there to be so sure?'

She shook her head. 'I wasn’t there. You were not there either.'

He did not say anything again but looked away.

'I know it's Sade. Ever since she came back into your life, you've changed.'

He still did not say anything. Actually he did not know what to say.

'Femi, how could you do this? How could allow her to lead you to this?'

He sighed. 'I was only trying to help her,' he said feebly. 'I didn’t' want her to feel abandoned.'

'Help her,' she said bitterly. 'Does helping mean lying about working late? Does helping mean committing adultery with her? Does it also
mean you must abandon your own family?'

He had no answers to the seemingly endless questions.

When Maggie saw that his silence was as good as admitting guilt, she did not rave or abuse him. She did not tell him what a useless man he was. Rather, she burst into tears. Femi was moved. He pulled her to himself to express how sorry he was and to promise that he would not abandon his family again.

Ada had been busy since morning. The court appearance they had that day made the schedule of things to be tight. By the time they were back in the chamber, she was quite tired. She ordered for a meal and wolfed it down. Bayo allowed her some rest before he sent for her. He was relaxing with cold malt drinks when she came to meet him. He motioned her to a seat.

'How're you, dear?' he greeted.

'Fine,' came the simple answer.

'Have you seen the alert of the money I transferred into your account?'

She looked surprised. 'No, I've not seen it. You've transferred some money?'

'Yes. One hundred thousand naira. It was a couple of hours ago.'

She checked the text message of her phone. A message was pending. It was from the bank she used and indeed it confirmed that her account
had been credited by the said amount from him.

'Pardon me, I didn't know when the message came. Yes, I can confirm the deposit.'

Bayo smiled. 'That settles everything.'

'What everything?'

'Oh come on. You know what I mean.'

Ada looked bemused. 'If you're referring to abortion, I've said no, no, no.'

His face became stern. 'Now, don't you start that silly game of yours again.'

'I'm not playing any game. And nothing is silly here. I'm having the baby, and that's that. Thanks for the money. I'll use it for the antenatal and to buy stuffs that the baby will need.'

He looked exasperated. 'Oh, for God's sake, Ada, surely you can't be serious with what you're saying.'

'I'm dead serious,' she asserted. 'I thought you said you love me. Where's the love?'

'Of course, I love you, but I did not bargain for this. No, we can't get married. I'm already married for God's sake.'

'I know. That doesn't justify that I must kill the unborn baby.'

'It's just a fetus, for now. It's not yet a baby. It's only a fetus that is a couple of weeks old.'

'It has a human life. Terminating it means taking human life.'

'And see who's sermonizing!'

She chuckled. 'Sermonizing or not, I want to keep the baby. '

'Alright, you can do all you want, but count me out. I'm not going to have anything to do with that baby!'

'You should have thought of that before sleeping with me!'

'Keep your voice down!' he rasped. Beads of sweat gathered at his brow. He was not finding her funny at all.

'Dear Ada, why’ve you proving so difficult? Do you want me to increase the money? Tell me, how much do you want? How much do you want
me to add to it?'

She shook her head emphatically. 'It's not about money. I want to have the baby. I'm tired of committing abortions. I want to have this baby.'

'What about me? This your action will ruin my home. It will ruin my marriage.'

'Explain to her that we're in Nigeria. A man's free to have more than one wife, here.'

'How could you be insisting on marriage? How could you?'

'Point of correction. I'm not insisting on marriage. What I'm insisting on is keeping the baby.'

'And where will that lead you? What is the essence of having a baby without being in marriage?'

She shrugged and then smiled. 'I think I'm tired of taking the life of an innocent soul. I also think I'll be happy to be a mother. What matters
is the desire and the contentment.'

Bayo shook his head. 'You don't know what you're saying. You're just carried away by certain passion. Why’re you so emotional about this?'

She smiled again and stood up. 'Once again, thank you for the money, Bayo darling - sorry, dear boss. It's a good way to start off.'

He did not say anything again. In his mind, Ada must be crazy.

His phone rang again. He checked the caller. Sade was on the line. There were many missed calls from her, more than ten. Deliberately, Femi had decided not to pick her call. It was a clear signal from him that he would like to be in incommunicado. Couldn't she get the message?

The gadget stopped ringing and there was a respite. Femi thought over everything again. Since the previous night when his wife challenged about his dalliance with Sade, he had been sober and remorseful. He felt guilty about the whole thing and realized that he should not have allowed himself to be carried away by Sade's overtures.

He has failed to uphold the virtues of Christianity which he should uphold. He had also failed to be a beacon of trust and faithfulness which were expected of him as a husband. The scripture enjoined husbands to love their wives. Could a man honestly claim to love his wife when he showered his love on another woman?

There was no doubt that he would have to amend his ways. He had to go back to the days when he was very devoted and faithful to his wife. Maggie had always been a loving and faithful wife. He must always reciprocate those wonderful gestures.

He went back to work and got himself busy. He had decided that today, as soon as it was four o'clock, he would close at work. Yes, he must bring back the old days.

By few minutes to the closing time, Femi decided to round off what he was doing. As wonted, he would have to take his laptop computer home so that his on-line work could continue.

Just then, Sade came in. Surprisingly, she sat at the reception and requested to see him.

By few minutes to the closing time, Femi decided to round off what he was doing. As wonted, he would have to take his laptop computer home so that his on-line work could continue.

Just then, Sade came in. Surprisingly, she sat at the reception and requested to see him.

When Lola gave Femi the message that Sade was around to see him, he felt deflated. Anyway, he had made up his mind on what to tell her. He asked that Lola usher her in.

She must have guessed what happened at his home. As soon as she sat down in his office, she asked how she reacted to knowing about their affair.

'How else do you expect her to react?' he fired back. 'Of course, she was angry about it.'

She sat down calmly. 'What do you think about the whole thing?' she asked.

'I feel sorry to let her down. I feel sorry for the acts of infidelity. My dear Sade, I shouldn't have done some of those things that I did. I allowed emotions to becloud my sense of reasoning. I'm sorry about everything.'

He had decided to be frank with her, even if that could be hurtful. He had also told himself not to ever allow himself to be carried away by passion again.

'I'm sorry too,' she said. 'I caused some ripples in your home. But it's not my fault. I did it for love.'

He shook his head. 'You have to stop that love now. You're married and I'm married. The only man you should love is your husband, and the only woman I should love is my wife.'

'What if you love your man but he doesn’t love you?'

'If you love your spouse but he's not showing love to you, you have to bear with him. As long as the two of you remain legally married, you
have to remain faithful in the relationship, even if the other person is not faithful.'

See who was preaching, Sade thought in sadness. She glanced at the wall clock and stood up.

'It's your closing time. I should be on my way.'

'Sade, I'm so sorry. I hope you understand.'

She made a wry smile. 'I'll be okay.' Her mien was cool and calm. She made her way out of the office. Femi watched her go, feeling sad. He almost pulled her back but refrained from doing so. He accompanied her to the ante office.

'I brought my car,' she told him. 'I'll find my way.'

He let her be. He must stick to his resolve not to break his marital vow again, he told himself.

This Saturday, Lola decided to visit Alfred at his home. He lived in a two-bedroom apartment at Abule Egba, a suburb of Lagos. After much pestering, she had agreed to pay him a visit. She had promised to be there by ten in the morning. Being a weekend, the traffic was light. By ten minutes to the appointed time, she was at his door. He was obviously expecting her.

'There you are, my beautiful angel,' he said as soon as he opened the door. He was all smiles.

'I'm looking for Alfred,' she replied, pretending that she was probably in the wrong place. 'Do you by any chance know a guy that bears that name?'

'I know the guy. You're in the right place. Please, come in.'

She followed him inside.

'You look like the Alfred I'm looking for,' she said.

He turned to stare at her. 'Wait a minute, you look like the lady I'm expecting.'

The two lovers burst into laughter. He gave her a hug. 'Welcome to my humble home, angel,' he enthused. 'Please, sit down. Sit down. I hope
you had no trouble in locating the place.'

Lola sat down relaxingly. 'No, no problem at all. This place is easy to locate.'

'You're welcome. Hey, give me a minute.' He rushed to the kitchen. Lola stood up and followed him. At the kitchen, the aroma of what he was
cooking hit her nose very strongly. On the gas cooker was a pot of jollof rice.

'You're cooking?' she asked in surprise.

'Yes, my dear. I'm cooking for my beautiful angel.'

'So, you can cook!'

'Yes. There were many things I learnt from my mother.'

The food was in the last stage of preparation. She watched as he completed the task, smiling. He wanted her to stay in the sitting-room and
watch the television, but she insisted on staying with him in the kitchen. He had already fried some chicken laps. He gave her one for a taste.
When the food was ready, she took over in the task of dishing and serving, although he wanted to do so. The food was delicious. Lola was quick
to commend.

He smirked. 'I'm glad you like it. When an angel commends one's efforts, it means heavens are pleased with that person.'

After the food, she insisted on clearing the plates. By the time she went back to the sitting-room, he had already set the table with non-
alcoholic wine and glasses.

'There was an oversight I made and I'm sorry,' he said.

'What oversight?'

'I did not comment about how beautiful you look in that dress.'

'Oh, thank you.'

'I'm serious, baby. You look like an angel.'

'Thank you. But, please, can you stop calling me baby. I don't think I really fancy that word.'

He grinned broadly. 'That will be difficult, dear. I see you as my baby. It also pleases me to call you baby.'

She did not know what to say to that.

'There's no harm in calling you baby, dear,' he argued.

As she did not want to press the issue further, she changed the topic.

`You're not looking bad too,' she offered.

'Thank you.'

He popped the wine and filled the glasses. ''Cheers.'

'Cheers.'

They sipped their drinks. 'Finally, you've known my place,' he said gleefully.

'Yes o.'

'We need to fasten our wedding plans. I want you to join me in this place fast.'

She smiled. 'I will soon join you, but we mustn't act in a haste.'

He laughed. 'There is nothing like haste, dear. I know we're made for each other. I'll be the king and you'll be the queen.'

The smile was still on her face. In her mind, she prayed that things would work out the way he enthused.

He moved closer to her and wrapped her shoulder with his left hand. They remained entangled in that posture for sometime.

'What're you thinking about?' she asked.

'I'm thinking about you.'

'What about me?'

'I'm thinking of what a wonderful wife you'll be.'

'And you, what kind of husband will you be?'

'I will try to be a wonderful husband.'

'Will try?'

'That's an understatement. I'll be a wonderful husband.'

'I pray so.'

He laughed and kissed her on the lips. She moved her mouth away. 'I told you we can't do that for now,' she mumbled.

'Yes, you said so. I'm sorry but I couldn't resist those luscious lips.'

'Don't worry, when the time comes, you'll have everything to yourself.'

He nodded. This decision not to engage in sex until marriage was not an easy thing for him, but he must keep to his words.

'Can I ask you a question?' he asked.

'Sure, you can.'

'Are you a virgin?'

She looked surprised. 'Haven't you asked that question before?'

He shook his head. 'No, I've not.'

She allowed a pause. 'Yes, I am.'

His eyes popped out in surprise.

'What? At your age? You mean you've not really ever done it?'

She nodded. 'No, I've not done it.'

'Whao. Wonderful. I can hardly believe it.'

'So, you don't even trust you wife to be?'

'No, no, I trust you, dear. In fact, if not that this is coming from you, I won't believe it. But I believe you, darling.'

He examined her body as if he was making an appraisal. From her head, his eyes moved to her neck, her bust, waist, thighs and legs. Of course, she was wearing a long skirt and long-sleeve, opaque blouse. She looked decent, modest and good. Her outfit adequately covered all the sensuous parts of her body, but she still looked beautiful and attractive.

Alfred could not see even the straps of her bra, not to mention the cups and what were inside. He wondered what make and color the brassiere was. His imaginations ran wild. Did it have lacy edges, and was it attractive? What was the size of her bust? He would have loved to know but he knew that would not be for now. If he asked, she would not likely tell him. But why must he know? Why couldn't he overlook such ephemeral things? Why must he overwork himself over mundane matters?

Lola was not his first love. He had had different lovers over the years. His last love, Rita, was a wild one. She had no reservations about passions, including sexual matters. Despite their torrid relationship, he had had a big argument with her and they had called it quits with each other. Besides, he had realized that Rita, in all aspects, was not a wife material.

Alfred had told Lola all his previous lovers, including Rita. Lola was different from all of them. She was decent, to say the least. He had decided to accord her with all respect. She was a precious one. Alfred could feel real love for her. Yes, real love. He must, thus, purge his mind of all lustfulness and stop the lurid imaginations.

'What are you doing?' she asked.

He stumbled back to the present. 'Er, don't mind me. I was only thinking about things.'

‘What things are you thinking about?’

‘Er… I don’t think I should say it. I think it's rather personal.’

‘So personal you can’t tell me?’

‘Er… actually, I was wondering about you. I was thinking about my previous relationships and how you're so different.’

She smiled to goad him on ‘What makes me different ? Must you flatter me?'

He laughed boyishly. “I won't flatter you. There's no point I do that. But honestly, you're so different from others. I also thought about your features. From your head to the toes. Everything is well-proportioned, including your bust.'

'Thank you for your appreciation but that one you mentioned last, why must your eyes go there?'

He laughed softly. 'Sorry I can’t prevent my eyes from going there. I don’t mean any harm. I'm only admiring your features. Is there any harm in that?'

She nodded knowingly. 'No harm, but we must be careful not to fall into temptation, dear Alfred. Staring at things one shouldn't stare at can bring temptation.'

'Don't worry. My staring and imaginations are for pure love. I won't do anything against your wish.'

She nodded again. 'My abstinence isn't just my wish. Rather, it's in line with Biblical injunction which states that the bed must be undefiled.'

'Yes, I understand. I believe the Bible is so right. I won't go against that injunction. You know what? Your coming into my life has changed a
lot of things, including many perspectives. I couldn't have believed that I would be in an intimate relationship without sex. But you've perfectly made me to understand that aspect. Thanks to God and you.' He hugged her.

'As for staring at you,' he continued, 'don't be bothered. Sometimes, when I stare at you, I'm only appreciating nature.'

'Nature?'

'Yes. God has made you so beautiful.' He smiled. 'Listen, Lola. You're in a very safe hand. I will never hurt you. I love you and I'll continue to do so.'

He appeared to be sincere, Lola decided. Alfred looked at her again and smiled. 'I'll wait until I see all those things you're hiding.'

'Hiding? What am I hiding?'

'Maybe hiding is not the proper word. Okay, let me change the word. I'll wait until I have access to all those parts I don't have access to, for now.'

'Is that the purpose of your desire to marry me?'

He smiled broadly. 'Come on, dear. You're much more than that. You're an angel. I want to marry you because I believe you're the best for me.'

She had stayed with him until some minutes after three. They chatted on this and that. In between, he said sweet nothings to her. He seemed to be someone she could trust. But trust or no trust, she would continue to keep her virginity until he had the right to take it.

When she stood up to go, he was reluctant about her letting her go..

'So soon? I thought we 'll be together all day long.'

'I'm sorry, that can not be today. We have workers meeting in the church by five o'clock. Don't worry, next time I come, I'll stay longer.'

He tried a smile. 'Alright. Sorry, my car is with the mechanic. If not, I'll drive you home.'

He hugged her again and squeezed several naira notes into her hand.

'Use that for your transportation,' he said, grinning.

'No, no, I shouldn't accept it,' she replied.

'Why not? Please, take it.'

She still hesitated. 'But this is much. This is much more than the transportation fares.'

'My dear, take it. If there's any change, use it to buy recharge card and call me, your lover boy.'

She smiled. 'Alright, thank you.'

'You're welcome.'

He accompanied her to the bus stop. He was there until the bus moved and was out of sight. Then he went back home. He felt really happy.
Lola had made his day.

He relaxed on the sofa to watch the live football match that was shown. The bell rang to announce a visitor. He was not expecting any other
person apart from Lola.

Could she be the one again? Maybe she forgot something and came back to take it. He moved to the door.

A surprise awaited him.

'What! Rita, it's you!' he exclaimed.

'Yes. Long time.'

'What on earth are you doing here?

'To see you, what else?'

He was still standing at the doorway, unsure of what next to do.

'Well, aren't you going to invite me inside?'

He allowed her in not so eagerly. She surveyed the sitting-room as if she had not been around for a very long time. Then she sat on one of the settee majestically.

'What do you want?' he asked wearily.

'You,' she answered simply. ' I've come to reconcile with you Let's forget our differences and move on. I've realised how childish and unreasonable I was. We shouldn't have quarreled in the first place.'

'You,' she answered simply. ' I've come to reconcile with you Let's forget our differences and move on. I've realised how childish and unreasonable I was. We shouldn't have quarreled in the first place.'

Rita sat on the same two seater Lola occupied minutes ago, but he could see the big differences between them. Rita wore a transparent top over a mini skirt. Through her top, he could see the color and the outline of what she wore underneath. The skirt was inches before the knees, so he could see her robust thighs. While the other lady looked coy and cool, this one was the exact opposite.

'Look, Alfred baby, I miss you so much. Don't you miss me? Why are you just standing there staring at me like that? Rita is back. Come over here and take your babe.'

She spread her hands in the certain expectation that he would come to her. Alfred smiled at her. Rita smiled back. She knew it. She knew that there was no way he could resist her. He had only been doing shakara.

'Come,' she said further. 'Don't just stand there with your smile. Don't you miss these?' She touched and jigged her voluptuous breasts.

Weeks ago, Alfred was her lover boy. There was no inhibition then. As a matter of fact, he used to delight in having extreme private moments with her. In seconds, his mind went over those things they used to do. They would always get to the height of debauchery.
Momentarily, the image of Lola came. His imagination of her was so powerful. It was as if she was there, watching the scene.

Then he saw Rita again. Rita was there in flesh and blood. There was no imagination or illusion about her presence. She was there with her expectation. It was a big paradox - what Lola was seriously withholding from him was what Rita was gladly offering on a platter of gold.

The red bus Lola took moved slowly, stopping at every bus stop, to pick passengers while some disembarked. She hoped she would get back to Ikorodu on time for the church meeting.

Her mind went over her visit to Alfred. He appeared to love her. Was he pretending or was it for real? She had been praying to God about the whole thing. There was no doubt that she was in love with him, but she was not going to impose her will on God. Rather, she prayed that the will of God should be done.

Her mind went over her previous relationships. None of them could fully understand and agree with her on abstinence, yet they all claimed to be Christians. One of them, Kingsley, had argued that since their intention was to get married, there was nothing wrong with having sex soonest. Another one had argued that even if it was a sin, the grace of Jesus was there to cover them. Yet another one said doing it was part of knowing each other better.

Lola had rebuffed them all. She had taken pain to explain that there was no Biblical back up for what they claimed. She had quoted some verses to them on the need to maintain sanctity. When they realized how tenacious she was, each of them had tactfully left. Lola had remained undeterred.

Alfred had looked like the kind that would not stand her principles for long. Tall and handsome, he looked like a young man that could have any lady he desired. Lola had prayed seriously about him, asking God to make him leave her alone if he was not God's will. So far, Alfred appeared to be who God wanted for her.

Another thing she noticed was his generosity. He had brought a lot of gifts for her, most of which she was reluctant to accept. He also appeared to be very nice. She prayed silently. God, please make Alfred to continue to be good, and even become better.

The smile was still on his face. Rita too was smiling.

'Come on,' she urged.

He shook his head slowly. 'I'm sorry, things are no longer the same. I'm a changed person from who you used to know. Besides, I'm in a new relationship.'

The smile slipped off her face fast like lightning and she jumped up from her seat.

'No, no, you can't be serious. Alfred, tell me you're joking. You can't just dump me like that.'

'We mutually called it quits, remember? I've moved on with my own life. I expect you to do the same. There's a new person in my life now.'

She felt dazed. Alfred, already in a new relationship? No, it could not be.

'You don't mean it? You're joking!'

He shook his head empathetically. 'I'm dead serious. And it's a serious relationship too.'

'Is she better than I? Does she satisfy you better than I?'

He chucked. 'She's not what you think. She's a genuine child of God and she has helped me to discover God in a wonderful way. I'm not the
guy I used to be. You're looking at a brand new person. Dear Rita, I'll enjoin you to turn a new leaf. Give your life to Christ and you'd be amazed at the transformation that you will experience.'

Rita looked more shocked.

'Alfred!' she shouted. 'What has come over you? Why are you talking like this? Who could have done this to you?'

'Nothing has come over me. If anything has come over me at all, then it's the holy spirit.'

'Holy mother, this can’t be Alfred.'

She waved her right hand. 'Hello, Alfred, this is Rita, your beautiful babe.'

He smiled and mimicked her wave. 'Hello, Rita. This is Alfred, a completely changed person.'

Rita shook her head again. She looked at the center table to see if he had been drinking and had got himself drunk. There was no drink on
the table. Besides, he was not swaying nor was he talking with a slur. Obviously, there was no drunkenness. Could it be that he had started smoking weed or was taking some powerful hard stuff?

As if he knew what was on her mind, he said, 'There's nothing wrong with me, Rita.'

He sat down, staring at her. 'Maybe I should introduce you to my new lady. I'm sure if she preaches to you, you'll be a new person too; a
better person. Looking at you, dear Rita, I can say that God has special purpose for you. If you can accept His guidance, you'll enjoy a new wonderful life. Accept Christ today, tomorrow may be too late.'

Rita could hardly believe her ears. Alfred? She shook her head again.

'I can see that you are not your normal self,' she declared.

With that, she stormed out of his apartment. Bemused, Alfred watched her as she slammed the door. He was surprised he had successfully
handled Rita without exchange of expletives or verbal assaults, although she had not been so politic. His own responses were cool, calm and
calculated

Did he really say those things he said? Did he really overtly reject Rita even with her seductiveness? Did Alfred really close his eyes to Rita's lascivious offer? The old Alfred would not have acted that way. He was amazed the way things had played out. God, indeed, was amazing.

Re: The Last Temptation by TomiDanesi: 5:47am On Mar 21, 2019
Two months after she went for the test that confirmed that she was pregnant, Ada continued to be unyielding to Bayo's suggestion that she should terminate the pregnancy. The fetus was now about twelve weeks old. She had decided to have the baby, no matter what. She actually appeared to have won the battle of wits, as Bayo had softened his stance - at least a little.

Now, there were important things she must do. The first was that she was planning to move out of her present abode and rent an apartment.

She presently stayed with her parents and four siblings in a three bedroom apartment at Isolo. Lagos. All her siblings were female and she was the first born. All of them were already grown up, the youngest being fourteen. Ada's parents were yet to know she was pregnant. They ran a thriving wholesale foodstuffs business and hardly have time for a grown up like her. It was only her immediate younger sister, Uche, who was an off-campus student studying pharmacy at the University of Lagos that suspected that she was pregnant. The first thing Ada ought to do was to tell her parents - since she planned to have the baby. Well, it was not too late

She heaved a sigh. Thank God, Bayo had stopped pestering her about abortion. He had unwillingly given a nod to her having the baby. He however said he would take full responsibilities on two conditions. The first was that there must be a paternity test as soon as she delivered the baby. He had said he was not one hundred per cent convinced that he was responsible. Ada felt slighted but kept her peace. Assuredly, he had said he would start taking care of her and her needs henceforth, but that he would stop the moment he realized the baby was not his own.

The second condition was that his wife must never hear about it. Marriage to Ada was out of the equation, he had said further, stressing that he detested bigamy and polygamy. Ada nearly laughed on hearing this. What an irony of thing for him to say.

As he reeled out those things he wanted, Ada pictured a high court Justice giving bail conditions to an accused person standing trial. Bayo was like the Judge and she was like the accused. Why was he behaving like she had done bad by conceiving for him? Had he not said he loved her? If you loved someone, why would it be a problem if that person tried to consolidate the relationship?

She had listened to him raptly without interrupting. When he was through, she had agreed to all his conditions. She smiled to herself. The outcome was not too bad, she had won some and lost some.

This evening, after their supper, Ada had sat her mum down for talks.

'Mummy,' she began. 'I want to start by apologizing to you for what I'm about to say. It is like placing the cart before the horse. I do apologize for any inconvenience it may cause you.'

'What are you apologizing for? What happened?'

'I'm pregnant,' Ada blurted out.

The older woman sighed. 'That should not be a problem. You have a good job. You're old enough to marry. Bring him home and let's start the
marriage formalities.'

'That is the problem, mummy. He doesn't want to hear anything called marriage.’

'Really? What has come over Nnamdi?'

Ada made a wry face. 'Nnamdi? Mummy, forget about Nnamdi. We broke up over five months ago.'

Her mother was greatly surprised. 'What? You mean Nnamdi was not the one responsible for the pregnancy?'

Ada was emphatic 'No way. Nnamdi and I broke up about five months ago. This pregnancy is less than three months old. There's no way
Nnamdi could ever be responsible.'

'But I saw Nnamdi in this house last month or so.'

'Yes, he has been coming once in a while to see if I would have a change of heart and accept him back, and I've told him it's all over between us.'

'Wonderful. Now, tell me, if Nnamdi is not responsible, who is?'

'I was coming to that mummy. My boss is responsible for the baby.'

'Your boss? Ehn, okay, fine. Bring him for proper introductions and other plans.'

'There are certain things about that. Number one, he's already married.'

'Didn't you know that before? Didn't you know he was married?'

'I knew. Right from day one, I knew.'

'Oh hoo, and you still opened your legs and let him impregnate you?'

'Mummy, I love him.'

Her mother made a face. 'The question is does he love you?'

'Yes, he says he does.'

'Then what is he waiting for? A man that loves a woman and gets her pregnant must be ready to marry her.'

'Yes, I agree, mummy. I'm sure he will still do the needful thing. He agrees, at least reasonably, that the baby is his. What he cannot come to

terms with is the issue of marriage.'

The older woman made a wry smile. 'Hmn, but he can come to terms with sleeping with you and impregnating you. So, my dear, what's the next thing, now?'

'Mummy, I've decided to have the baby, whether he agrees to marry me or not. My mind is saying I should go ahead and have the baby. But I know with time, he will marry me.'

'You don't have to force yourself on him. You don't have to. But, why did you quarrel with Nnamdi? Such a fine, young man. Why did you
send that one away and put yourself in this mess?'

'Mum, I never loved Nnamdi. I was just tolerating him throughout the relationship.'

'And this one you claim to love, see how he is treating you'.

'Mummy, don't worry. It's a little challenge and I'll soon be out of it.'

Her mother sighed deeply.

'The next thing now is I will have to rent my own apartment. I'm moving out of here.'

'You don't have to do that, my dear. You should remain here until you marry.'

'But, I can't have a baby in this house. It won't be proper.'

'Says who?'

'I already told him about renting my own apartment and he agrees.'

'I don't understand this your man, self. He's ready to accept the baby from you and to rent an apartment, but he's not ready to marry you.'

Her mother sighed deeply.

'The next thing now is I will have to rent my own apartment. I'm moving out of here.'

'You don't have to do that, my dear. You should remain here until you marry.'

''But, I can't have a baby in this house. It won't be proper.'

'Says who?'

'I already told him about renting my own apartment and he agrees.'

'I don't understand this your man, self. He's ready to accept the baby from you and to rent an apartment, but he's not ready to marry you.'

'Mummy, don't worry. I can take care of things. All will be well.'

'Okay o. If you say so. So this man, what is his name? Where does he come from? What kind of person is he?'

'Hey, mum, all these questions at once? Okay, I'll answer them one by one. His name is Bayo Adeyemi. He is in his late thirties and he hails
from,' she paused slightly, 'he hails from Ondo state. He is handsome and kind-hearted.'

Her mother stared at her. 'Does he have children from the other wife?' She had asked the question as if Ada was already his wife.

'Yes. Two girls. One more thing, he is not only my boss, he is also my employer.'

'So, because he is oga lawyer, you allowed him to take advantage of you?'

'No, mummy. As I have said, I love him.'

She sighed again. 'Love. Love is not that easy, you know. I hope you really love him, and it's not infatuation. Above all, I hope he loves you.'
She gave a long pause. 'I will discuss the issue with your dad when he comes.'

Femi worked slowly and thoroughly on the internet. He preferred to make his work error-free or to have minimal errors. There were so much editing to do, yet he did not want to use the ad hoc arrangement he normally used.

His cell phone rang. His darling wife was on the line.

'Hello, how're you, dear?'

'Fine, darling.' She sounded excited. 'I just want to hear your voice,' she said and laughed.

'Maggie darling. I really appreciate that my dear wife'

They chatted a bit more and finally disconnected the line. Femi was full of smiles. On his derailment, he thanked God he was able to retrace
his steps on time. He had actually cried unto God for forgiveness. He had prayed and fasted and had been remorseful and penitent. Maggie had been understanding and forgiving. He thanked God for His forgiveness and for such a wonderful and understanding wife. Infidelity was one
phenomenon he prayed he would never engage in again. He had learnt his lessons.

He still maintained contacts with Sade, but not in secret or clandestine places. She too said she understood. Bayo still maintained his licentious life style, but there was no way two wrongs could ever make a right.

'Hmn hmn,' someone mumbled.

Femi quickly looked up. He had been so engrossed in his thoughts he did not know when Lola came in.

'Excuse me, sir,' she said. 'I'll like to see you for a minute.'

'Of course. Sit down, dear. Hope no problem.'

'Not at all, sir. I want to inform you that I've found the man to be my husband.'

Femi was pleasantly surprised to hear that. 'Really? Is that true?'

'Yes, it's true. A serious guy has come along and God has shown that he is the one.'

'Very good. Congratulations, sister. I'm happy for you.'

'Thank you, sir. I appreciate all you've been doing to me, especially your brotherly love and spiritual guidance. Thank you, for your prayers. God will bless you and your family.'

'Come over here.' He stood up and spread his hands. Lola was in his warm embrace. Indeed, Femi was genuinely happy for her.

'Thank you, Lord,' he said. 'Almighty father thank you for your daughter. Thank you for everything.'

When she disengaged, she informed him: 'He works for an architectural company in this building. He will come over during break and I'll introduce him to you.'

He nodded. 'That'll be fine. I'll like to know the lucky man.'

'When I told him about you, he too says he'll like to meet you.'

'That's good.' He nodded approvingly. 'That's very good.'

As soon as Madam Funmi Popo was ushered into his office, Bayo rose to greet the woman. She was a fair complexioned woman of average height. She offered her handshake as if she was doing him a favor. Bayo did not mind her condescending attitude. Some women were like that, especially those who belonged to the very upper class.

Mrs. Popo was a new client. She was one of the wives of Chief Tayo Popo, the billionaire business man who died in his private jet crash about a year ago. The media had been awash with news of Popo's family and how the wives (he had three) had been at loggerheads over sharing the wealth left behind by the departed mogul.

The latest news was that Madam Funmi Popo was instituting a legal action challenging the purported will read by the solicitor to the mogul.
Although out of court settlement could not be ruled out, the madam wanted Bayo and his chamber to start the litigation on the authenticity of the will.

Bayo was expecting her. She had an appointment. He motioned her to a seat.

'You're welcome, madam. Please, make yourself comfortable.' The whiff of the perfume she used hit his nostrils hard.

He sent for a partner. For the next thirty minutes or so, she briefed them while they interjected with questions and scribbled down notes
intermittently.

During lunch hour, Bayo sent for Ada.

'Ada darling, I've hardly seen you today.'

'I was actually thinking of coming to your office when your message came.'

He smiled. 'Now, that's a nice dress you're wearing there. You look very chic.'

Ada smiled. 'Thank you.'

'Come over here,' he patted his lap.

'We're in the office, barrister Bayo.'

'I know, baby lawyer Ada.' His smile was expansive. 'Come on.'

She sat on where he had indicated. The fact was she had sat on his lap countless number of times.

'How is the baby doing?' He touched her tummy. 'It's amazing the way God works, isn't it? For now, it doesn't even look like anything is
growing there!'

She smiled. 'Yes, God's ways are amazing.

He kissed the back of her neck.

'I've told my parents about the baby,' she announced.

He held her hands. 'Good. What did they say? How did they react?'

'They want to see you. They want to know who has put their daughter in the family way.'

He grinned. 'That will be no problem.' He had indeed softened in his stance. He had thought a lot over the issue. His second daughter was
already three years old and all efforts between him and his wife to have another child had not yielded fruits. In Bayo's opinion, maybe God wanted to compensate his efforts through Ada.

'I'll see them,' he said. 'I'll see your parents. Will this weekend be okay?'

Ada was pleasantly surprised. She had thought he would prove stubborn about it and would be dilly-dallying.

'This weekend will be okay. I'll tell them.'

He nodded. God must have destined all these for me, he thought.

Eneh and Martin sat on the bed as they chatted. They had done fourteen days and twenty-one days fasting phases. The next would be forty days. Forty days! Martin's heart quivered when he thought of the long days of dawn-to-dusk abstinence from food and drink that lay ahead. He gulped. It was not going to be easy.

His mind was full of thoughts. In as much as he appreciated his wife's unyielding faith and belief, why should she subject herself to these self denials, when there were alternatives? Why would she - and he - go through so much hassles when they could get succor through other means?

To Martin, the use of IVF was the best way out. He had made some researches on it. The in vitro fertilization (IVF) was a process of conception where a female egg would be combined with sperm outside the ovary of the woman. Once the fertilized egg had undergone embryo culture between two and six days, it would be transferred to the woman's (or any other woman's) uterus for full development.

Eneh had told him she would not go for it. She had the firm faith that they would have their children through the natural means. It could take time, she admitted, but she would wait.

She would quote Jeremiah 29: 11 – 13

Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will harken unto you.

And ye shall seek me, and shall find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

She would also read copiously from the book of Psalms, the favorite quotes being from Psalm 18: 16 - 17: He sent from above, he took
me, he drew me out of many water. He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me, for they were too strong for me.

She would tell Martin the same thing and urged him to hold on to those powerful words. Martin would marvel at her faith. He wished he could have it to that level.

what He was doing. Eneh was indeed a woman of great faith.

When it was closing time, Lola arranged her table and disengaged the charger from the socket. The cell phone was fully charged. She put the phone and the charger in her hand bag and quickly brought out her small mirror. The reflection of her face on the mirror showed that it was okay. She rubbed her palm on it to remove any oiliness and returned the mirror inside the bag. She was set to go, She went inside her boss' office to let him know she was about to go.

'Alright, Lola. Goodnight and take care of yourself.'

She took her hand bag and left the place. These days, she hardly went home with her boss after closing. This was mainly for two reasons. The
first was that he worked up till five pm. The second reason was that Alfred wanted to be the one taking her home - or at least half way home.

Today was one of those days he had decided to drive her home after work. She met him at the lobby on the ground floor where he was already waiting.

'There you are, angel,' he said with his trade mark smile as soon as he saw her.

'Are you set?' he asked.

'Of course.' They left the giant building.

'So how was the work? I hope it's not burdensome,'

'No, it's not. The work is okay.'

He nodded. 'I don't want anything that will stress my angel.'

'Thank you.'

His car was the white Hyundai Accent in the car park. Instead of taking Agege Motor road, he would drive through Ikorodu road. Lola would
alight at Anthony bus stop where she would take another bus to Ikorodu. As for him, he would take the Oshodi road and then link with the
Sango Ota road at Oshodi.

They settled comfortably in the car.

As he drove, he brought out his cell phone and showed her pictures of different wedding gowns.

'Each of these will fit you,' he began, 'but these ones will fit you better.'

'Are you not putting the cart before the horse? We've not even done introduction.'

'I know. We'll soon do all the needful. But I can't wait to see you in one of the beautiful gowns by my side as I walk you down the aisle.'

She smiled, looking at the assorted gowns. 'I think I like this,' she pointed at a particular one and showed him.

'But wait a minute,' she added quickly. 'You're not to select a gown for your bride. As a matter of fact, the wedding gown should not be
known to the groom until that very morning of the wedding day.'

'Really? I thought it's the man that choses for the bride.'

'No, I don't think so.'

He smiled. 'No problem. I know whatever you wear will perfectly fit you.'

She was still scrolling down the cell phone, gazing at the wedding accessories when the phone vibrated. An unknown number was calling his
line. She handed the phone to him.

'Now, who could this be?' he muttered.

He touched the answer key. 'Hello?'

'Hello, Alfred darling.'

'Who is this?' he demanded.

She was still scrolling down the cell phone, gazing at the wedding accessories when the phone vibrated. An unknown number was calling his line. She handed the phone to him.

'Now, who could this be?' he muttered.

He touched the answer key. 'Hello?'

'Hello, Alfred darling.'

'Who is this?' he demanded.

'Alfred, don't tell me you've deleted my number!' the caller protested.

Oh God, Alfred said under his breath and winked at Lola.

'Sister Rita, how're you?' he said with a grin.

Rita laughed over the line. 'Forget the sister stuff. This is your babe on the line.'

'You're more like a sister to me, now.'

'I don't want to be a sister to you, Alfred. I want to continue to be your babe.'

'That was in the past, Rita. That was in the past.'

'Alfred, why're you still cross with me? Why can't you forgive and let's be together again. Why is it difficult for you to forgive?'

'I've forgiven you, Rita. Actually, there is nothing to forgive, but if you insist, I'll say I don't hold anything against you. But we can't be lovers
again. We can't.'

There was a long pause on the line.

'Rita? Hello?'

The line indicated that it had been disengaged. He sighed. Lola had been watching him intently.

'Rita again?' she said.

He nodded and smiled at her. 'Don't you ever worry, my dear.' He pulled her to himself. 'No lady can ever take Alfred away from you.'

'Are you sure about that?'

He laughed. 'Yes, yes, yes. No lady in the in the whole wide universe can take me away from you.'

'Okay o. I'll say you said so.'

He squeezed her hand again. 'Yes, I said and say so.'

He drove through Palm Groove. He wondered about Rita. Why was she bent on disturbing him? Why couldn't she accept a simple fact and go
her way? He turned to glance at Lola. Their eyes locked briefly and he smiled. He was more convinced than ever that Lola was the woman for
him. No matter what, he would not allow anybody or anything to circumvent that.

He drove through Palm Groove. He wondered about Rita. Why was she bent on disturbing him? Why couldn't she accept a simple fact and go her way? He turned to glance at Lola. Their eyes locked briefly and he smiled. He was more convinced than ever that Lola was the woman for him. No matter what, he would not allow anybody or anything to circumvent that.

Two months after that, Alfred, his uncle and his wife, two of his friends and one other relative visited Lola's family at Ikorodu for the official introduction ceremony. It was a short but significant ceremony. At the end of the get-together, the dates for the engagement and the wedding proper were fixed. In three months time, Alfred and Lola would be officially joined together. Lola was very happy. The prayer she had been asking God to grant was finally about to be granted. Alfred too was highly happy. He felt he was about to marry someone that portended good for his. This young Itshekiri man was about to move to the next phase of life.

The introduction went on smoothly and so was the wedding. Something nagged at the back of Lola's mind. What if Rita came on the scene to disrupt activities? When she expressed the fears to Alfred, he dispelled her fears and urged her not to worry.

On the morning of her wedding day, Lola woke up early to prepare for the day. Everything was set to make the event successful. Her white wedding gown was laid on the bed.

Her good friend and fellow chorister, Helen, would be her right hand lady. It was Helen that designed the wedding gown and baked the giant cake. Lola was strict about the material used and about the need to exhibit decency in its designs. Helen did everything according to specifications. She was also around to help Lola wear the gown.

She looked very beautiful in the gown, despite the little makeup. When one of her uncles who stood in as her father handed her over to Alfred in the church, her groom said she was the most beautiful bride he had ever seen.

'Today must be my luckiest day,' Alfred told her. 'Just look at you, my beautiful bride!'

The church service went smoothly.
Thankfully, nothing disrupted the whole proceedings. The reception hall was an event centre not far from the church. The couple was the cynosure of all eyes. As they sat on their special chairs, Alfred hummed the loud music that was booming from the giant speakers to himself.

What God has
joined together
let no man
put asunder.

What God has
joined together o
let no man
put asunder

Long before now, he had listened to that song and had wondered when his own wedding would come. He felt so glad to be listening to it, now that he was having his own occasion. He felt good. He felt excited. Lola too felt elated. She gave thanks to God.

The chairman's of the occasion was Femi. He exhorted the couple to exhibit love, understanding and tolerance always.

'Things may not always be rosy,' Femi said. 'But remember that you're for better and for worse. You must stand by each other. That is the
essence of the marital vows you have taken.'

When it was time for the couple to dance, Alfred easily beat her to it. There was no way the highly reserved Lola could have matched the
highly exuberant Alfred.

After the ceremony had come to an end, the newly wedded couple would have to retire to privacy. Alfred had said the best place they would
have their honeymoon would be his apartment. The drive to his place was the sweetest he ever had. It was already dark before they got there.
He practically carried his bride from the car to his flat. He took her straight to the bedroom.

'We must pray to God to thank Him for everything He has done,' Lola said.

He agreed. She was absolutely right. They thanked God and prayed that the marriage would be joyful and fruitful.

Thereafter, he removed his suit and shirt. When he saw her attempting to zip down her gown, he quickly told her to hold on.
