Sources close to the Kano State governor, His Excellency, Umar Ganduje has confirmed to LeadersNG that the embattled governor paid Islamic clerics he took to see President Buhari on Friday the 19th of October, 2018 the sum of Ten Million Naira (N10,000,000) each amidst allegations he collected Five Million Dollars ($5,000,000) bribe from contractors as kickbacks. The source said a total of 25 clerics escorted the governor to Abuja to see the president. LeadersNG can confirm that the governor paid a total of Two Hundred and Fifty Million Naira (N250,000,000) to get the clerics to go on the endorsement trip to Abuja. The source, however, said the governor did not bribe the clerics for their support to the president but only gave them “thank you for coming’ money.
The source said the governor embarked on this move to show that he still enjoins the support of the president and prove to people back home in kano that all is well as he is fast loosing grip of the state politically. Kano State is one of the swing states in the 2019 general elections. The delegation of Islamic clerics who accompanied governor Ganduje now popularly called Gandollar back home in kano were mainly from the Tijjaniyya muslim sect.
A presidential source who spoke to us said the courtesy call on President Buhari at the Aso Presidential Villa in Abuja was short and very unusual. The source said the governor and the visiting islamic clerics simply joined the president for the Friday prayers and he had a brief photo session with them. He said typically, the president would have invited them in for lunch but never did. The president left the Kano governor outside and went in for lunch with the Chief of Staff, some of his ministers and personal aides but never invited the governor and the islamic scholars in to join him the source said.
The presidential source further stated that the president is unhappy with the governor over the bribe-taking video and that it has caused the APC government serious embarrassment considering that the president is well known for his anti-corruption stand.
This comes few days after the Kano House of Assembly opened a probe into the bribe-taking videos that implicated the governor.
