Jul 18, 2010

The police have rescued the 4 abducted journalists. Uncomfirmed reports say the journalists are on their way to Umuahia, the Abia state capital .
The journalists are Chairman, Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Wahab Oba; Assistant Secretary, Lagos State Council of the NUJ, Mr. Sylva Okereke; Secretary, NUJ Zone G, Mr. Adolphus Okonkwo; Member NUJ, Mr. Shola Oyeyipo with the driver of their vehicle, Azeez Yekini.

It was reported yesterday, that the police have stepped up efforts to free the kidnapped journalists, police and union officials told the AFP.
“We have deployed men from the anti-terrorist and robbery units to comb everywhere in Abia State with a view to securing the release of the journalists,” a police spokesman said.
He said police were hopeful the four men who were seized on Sunday while returning from a conference in nearby Akwa Ibom State would be freed soon.
Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretary Usman Leman told AFP that journalists were taking part in the search.
“We have volunteers from our colleagues who are taking part in the search by the police. Every forest and bush is being combed,” he said.
Leman said the kidnappers were insisting on a ransom of 30 million naira (200,000 dollars, 155,000 euros) before the journalists could be freed.
The gunmen had earlier demanded 250 million naira.

More updates later.

Good. . now can they enact a law that makes Kidnapping a federal offense and gives any kidnapper 50yrs with no option of fine?
That will nip it in the bud

Today in America ppl think twice before kidnapping, its a Federal offense, and u dont want to mess with the FEDS

My brother, enacting laws in Nigeria does not excite me any longer because we have laws for everything, including corruption, yet our level of corruption remains a world beater. sad sad

why are you worrying yourself on how the journalists were rescued ? The fact is that ransome was paid to the kidnappers but the police couldnt arrest any of them.is that not an embarrassment to the police ?

Four journalists kidnapped by gunmen in Abia State regained their freedom in the early hours of Sunday after a week in captivity.

It was learnt that the kidnapped men were freed during an overnight raid on the kidnappers hideout by a special unit of State Security Service operatives trained in Israel.

Sources said one of the operatives died during in the raid.

It was not immediately clear if any arrests were made.

The kidnapped men include the Chairman, Lagos Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr. Wahab Oba; Secretary, Mr. Sylvester Okereke; Zonal Secretary, NUJ, Zone G, Mr. Adolphus Okonkwo; a council member, Mr. Sola Oyeyipo and their driver, Mr. Azeez Abdurauf.

They were ambushed on July 11 at Umuafor Ukwu Local Government Area while returning from a three-day National Executive Council meeting of the NUJ in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The kidnappers had initially demanded a ransom of N250m which was later reduced to N30m.

Official sources who confirmed the development said the men arrived at the state capital, Umuahia at about 9am on Sunday and were taken to the office of the Commissioner of Police.

They were also scheduled to undergo a comprehensive medical examination before being taken to their respective homes.

Oba was sad to have spoken with his wife at about 6am on Sunday. Other victims have also contacted family members.

Who cares where they are trained?
Their only job was probably to deliver the ransome to the kidnappers.
Re: Breaking News: Police Rescue Kidnapped Journalists by RICHIEBOI1(m): 12:57pm On Jul 18, 2010
shei i said it here that the police would pay the ransome money ,after all the noise they made about drafting 10,000 policemen to abia and the IGP relocating his office temporary to abia. these are bunch of incompetent 'men in black'. grin

My brother, enacting laws in Nigeria does not excite me any longer because we have laws for everything, including corruption, yet our level of corruption remains a world beater.

I dont know if there is any law that specifically makes kidnapping in any territory of Nigeria a Federal offense
That would mean setting up a particular team in which all kidnapping cases in all states are handled

The team will operate like the EFCC and have lines for members of public to drop tips

If this is done, the menace will be dealt with A.S.A.P
luckily we dont have it as bad as the mexicans/colombians for now

A special team is not going to make any impact just like EFCC has become a political hammer.what we need is deployment of military to those place and form a joint taskforce with the police.it has worked during the militancy era,so it has more credence than any other options.

I'm sure the ransom money must have been paid.

Re: Breaking News: Police Rescue Kidnapped Journalists by Abagworo(m): 10:13pm On Jul 18, 2010
