I mean a unifying factor for a country in the sense that it can be use as a lingua franca in all spheres of life that everybody can tune into.

In "A" country. . . . yea. But in a global world? No.

I disagree with EzeUche. . . . setting your language as an official language for your country is really not a smart idea. Esp when you want to join a global world.

My Burkina Faso friends [her official language is French] came here to find a better life, but finds it hard to speak/understand English. I usually help her with all her documents, hell, I know her visa ID # in my head. Now tell me, how will ppl like her make it easily in a global world without a lil assistance.

English should just stay the World's official language for every country jor undecided

She should of went to France.

I said set it up as the official language that goes with English or Spanish. French is not widely spoken.

Ghana's official language is English, but Twi is widely spoken in which people learn that African language as well English. If we had our own nations we could focus on our languages and allow English to be spoken.

Aren't we trying to eliminate language as a Global Restriction?

Yea, if English was also encouraged [official] in her country, ppl like her wouldnt have a problem with immigrating.

We don't really have to speak english for mike sake if we can chart our own destiny.English is an imperial language and it will be greatly beneficial to us if we can develop own language and if an english man must deal with us,he will be forced to communicate in our language, that is power.

English people think it is their birth right to impose their language on others because they are superior.Their language have stood the test of time, even the roman invasion and occupation of england for centuries did not wipe out english language and it is still going strong because they understand the fundamental importance of a language,it is the pedigree of nation and in the absence of it,there is no nation or culture,no dignity.

You fail to think deeply.

i said initially that for any language to still remain relevant it has to be a language of taught or learning in school were that language is dominant.

English, french, italian, spanish, dutch.deustch and even swahili are all language of taught and learning. The more a language becomes a language of taught and learning the longer its durability because new words or words for new inventions will always come out.Tell me what is 'generator' in yoruba?

Also a country need not use a 'foreign' language as its laguage.Example i have met amny dutch people that can speak english but english is not a language of learning in holland but dutch. They only learn it because of english language schools there.

Actually English is a Germanic language. The original language of Great Britain was a Celtic language that was similar to Scottish, Welsh and Irish. English is a Romance Language that is descended from Latin just like Spanish, Italian and French. Plus, after the Norman invasion, French mixed with Anglo-Saxon language that was brought after the Roman left the island as their empire was crumbling.

I already answered this. . . . did you miss this part in the article that you "read"?

“[The] Igbo language may be getting extinct because the Igbo family stopped speaking to their children in their mother tongue.”

Even if Igbo or any other language is being taught as a course, it doesn't guarantee  "long-memory" of that language. What guarantees it as how often it's being spoken between peers, family, friends and neighbors. A lot of grade 5-12 children were taught foreign language as a course here,  barely 1% of these children speak the language fluently because English is what they speak at all time.

Wogu is right, the blame goes to the parent.

As true as this is, I still disagree with it. English should be ONE of the country's official language.

This is not about inferiority. . . . as you claimed in your last post. Do you know how powerful English is? That's what will make you and Koshiniwa understand each other. That's why I said that in a global world, English is a very important tool and should be adjusted and fit into each country's list of official languages undecided

English is a hybrid language. It has a lot of similarities with German since they are both Germanic language but it is technically a Romance Language descended from Latin as well. French is germanic also since the Franks originated from Germania as well.

And English was influenced by French after the Normans led by William the Conqueror invaded England and established Norman rule.

There is a difference btw teaching igbo as a course and using it to teach things like social studies, science, agriculture etc.Babs Fafunwa knew what hye was saying when he proposed this in 1985.

Nobody said English should not be learnt. There can or should be english language learning schools rather than using it as a language of taught from nursery school.

Everytime globalization.I wonder how that has really helped the country.Maybe South Korea that used to be our mate use english as a language for learning.

The more we begin to understand how most things we subjectively and nonchalantly do today came about, the more we begin to realize out place in the whole scheme of things.

Most times we just think things are main to be and not subject to changes and deviations because we fail to understand what it is all about. We fail to understand that it is about dynamism,it is about adaptation, about essentiality and most of all about survival.

Thank you. Made a whole lot of sense.

What we call survival, some ppl call inferiority complex. And they ask whose got the problem.

Unfortunately my parents didn't teach me either. I've taken it upon myself to learn the language through online tools and my cousins.
Re: ‘igbo Language May Go Extinct’ by ChinenyeN(m): 9:54pm On Jul 21, 2010
I honestly don't get this thing about "teaching one's lect". My parents never "taught" me to speak. I just picked up on it, as I grew, and it wasn't just my parents. It was adults in general. At amaala meetings, clan picnics, at home, etc. I would always hear my parents & other adults conversing with each other, and from there, I picked it up. I really don't think it is strictly a matter of being "taught" one's lect.

Do you think it is every body that goes to amaala meetings?

Not everyperson has the ability to pick up languages easily.

It is not strictly it but it is a confirmed sure way a language can survive in this era especially for an ethnic group like igbo that are too pragmatic with life in generall.

Where you not the one looking for some rather abstract english words in igbo? You think a language that is not used as a medium of teaching in school is going to survive that long?

Do you know the effect of using english as a medium of teaching right from birth while u just learn your so called mother tongue just by listening?

Like i asked someone else can u tell me the meaning of 'generator' or 'radio speaker' in your 'lect'?

Africans have to think deep.
Re: ‘igbo Language May Go Extinct’ by ChinenyeN(m): 11:29pm On Jul 21, 2010
I get what you're saying, asha, and now that I think about it, I agree. As for those abstract English words, some of those I know the translation to. At least, in my lect I do. The only reason why I asked for them is because I thought that, if it existed in my lect, it had to also exist in others', or in general Igbo. So I was looking for the general Igbo word for those, or other lectal variants.

asha 80:

This, I agree with you on 100%. I remember you mentioning this several times before on other topics, and I've since been in agreement. A language, not used in the academia, would not last too long, and would certainly not develop much further.

asha 80:

Like i asked someone else can u tell me the meaning of 'generator' or 'radio speaker' in your 'lect'?
That's not in my lect, but that doesn't mean we cannot develop terms for those. All in all, I really do understand what you're saying, and I do agree.
Re: ‘igbo Language May Go Extinct’ by chiogo(f): 12:20am On Jul 22, 2010
Asha80,

You're right. I picked up the language just by hearing my parents speak it to me. I never learned it in school and yea, I can barely speak Igbo without adding some English words. But the problem stems from the language itself because even my parents and the older generations use English words while speaking Igbo since many English words cannot be directly translated to Igbo like Table(Tabulu ), TV, etc.
