Nigeria women’s football team, the Super Falcons, will kick off their 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) campaign against South Africa on November 18.

The Nigeria national women's football team, nicknamed the Super Falcons, is the national team of Nigeria and is controlled by the Nigeria Football Federation

. They won the first seven African championships and through their first twenty years lost only five games to African competition: December 12, 2002 to Ghana in Warri, June 3, 2007 at Algeria, August 12, 2007 to Ghana in an Olympic qualifier, November 25, 2008 at Equatorial Guinea in the semis of the 2008 Women's African Football Championship and May 2011 at Ghana in an All Africa Games qualification match.

The Super Falcons have been unable to dominate beyond Africa in such arenas as the FIFA Women's World Cup or the Olympic Games. The team has been to every World Cup since 1991, but managed just once to finish in the top eight. In 2003, the Super Falcons turned out to be the biggest disappointment of the first round, failing to score a single goal and losing all three Group A matches. They did little better in 2007, drawing only one of their Group B matches. However, they faced the group of death in both 2003 and 2007, grouped both times with rising Asian power North Korea, traditional European power Sweden, and a historic women's superpower in the USA.

Nigeria hosted the African women’s championship finals for the third time in 2006, replacing Gabon, which was initially granted the right to host but later pulled out citing financial difficulties, and won it for the seventh time in a row. Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Ghana’s Black Queens represented Africa in China for the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup.


Nigeria won the African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) for the 8th time after a 1–0 win over Cameroun in Yaounde. The winning goal was scored by Desire Oparanozie for Nigeria to retain the trophy they won in Namibia two years ago. This is the third time Nigeria is defeating Cameroun in the history of the AWCON competition, the Lionesses lost the AWCON title to Nigeria in the 2004 edition when lost 5 – 0, then in the 2014 edition, Nigeria beat Cameroun 2 – 0 courtesy of goals from Asisat Oshoala and Desire Oparanozie.

Nigeria won AWCON the title in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2014 but lost two editions of the competitions to Equatorial Guinea in 2008 and 2012.

The Super Falcons have shown dedication over the years by qualifying for every tournament. They have won the tournament back to back by staying consistent, a feat which has been arduous for the Super Eagles.

Super Falcons in Ghana for Women Africa Cup of Nations victory


Reigning African Woman Footballer of the Year, Super Falcons Asisat Oshoala is highly favoured to lead Nigeria's attack at the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations in Ghana
Reigning champions Nigeria flew into Ghana’s capital city, Accra yesterday on their way to Cape Coast for Group B attrition of the 11th Women Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON).

The Super Falcons flew aboard an Emirates Airline flight from Abidjan, where they had camped for the past eight days at the Sol Beni Sports Centre, into the Ghanaian capital before the trip to Cape Coast, where they play South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the opening match of Group B on Sunday.


A team of 21 players and 12 officials arrived in Cape Coast. Chairman of the Nigeria Women Football League and Member of the NFF Executive Committee, Ms Aisha Falode will join the team on Friday.

Winners of the competition in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2016, the Falcons are looking for a ninth title, alongside a ticket to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in France. The top three finishers in Ghana will fly Africa’s flag in France next year summer.

Coach Thomas Dennerby is confident the Cup holders will be in the final match scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium on 1st December.
