THE FOUR MUST-HAVE SKILLS FOR ALL POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS

Everywhere or place that a man gets to and at any time, the skills he possesses would always blaze the path to his greatness. Skills are like a magnet that draws men and opportunities to those who possess them.
Like light, skills cannot be darkened or kept in obscurity by segregation, discrimination or dichotomy – words that polytechnic students have heard over and over again. Being respected as a student or graduate does not require agitation or any rocket science but you developing relevant skills along with you becoming vast in whatever your field or course of study is.

Being a platform committed to developing and equipping Polytechnic Students for a better and fulfilling graduate life, we have researched and compiled the following list of skills that students, and polytechnic students especially, must possess to make a quick head start outside the academic wall

SKILL # 1

COMMUNICATION/EXPRESSION SKILL

World over, and among different classes of people, communication skill is one of the skills that are believed that a person must possess to get to the topmost height of life. Ability to clearly articulate and drive home ones point coherently or sells oneself so beautifully and excellently is a product of good ‘expression skill'.

To be able to express yourself smoothly and coherently, you must have a firm grasp of the English Language which is Nigeria's formal language; and having a good grasp of the language starts from you building your vocabulary – your word bank. You should know the right and suitable word for everything and every thought. That way, expressing yourself brilliantly and beautifully would be seamless and relishing. And as you do so, people would have no choice but to appreciate you.

SKILL # 2

NETWORKING SKILL

You should have an eye for sporting resourceful people and know how to form a relationship with them. Try to always appear charming and constantly strive to leave people with a good impression of your personality. The amount of what you become in life depends on the number of resourceful persons you are associated with. Connect with people. Show them the skills and values you possess and how you are and can be useful to them.

SKILL # 3

ICT SKILL

Are you a student or graduate and you cannot press a button or perform a simple task on the computer?
Please wake from your fantasies because you sure are sleeping and have no touch whatsoever with the reality of the day!

Every student should be able to perform basic tasks and use basic computer applications – and that is just for the very least. Ideally – and because of the great demand of the 21st century –, students need to be grounded and be able to use high-end computer applications. Your spare time at school can best be used to build your ICT skills.

SKILL #4

INFORMATION GATHERING AND UTILIZATION SKILL

The robust information we have in the 21st century is a corollary of the ubiquitous web technology. There is endless information out there, especially on the internet, which, if students amass and utilize, can make a big difference in their lives.

Students are often stuck in life simply because they do not know what to do next, and not knowing what to do next often comes from their lack of information. One of the undoings of today's students is delaying the gathering of any information at all till after graduation.

Common guys, it does not work that way!

You need to know ‘what’s up’ even before graduation. You need to be savvy and know how to navigate the real world using information. Doing this will give you a quick head start when you get to the labour market. Some of you might not even go the labour-market way but start your own business straight-off courtesy the information you have gathered.

TVNPS wishes you success as you begin to build these skills and spell-bound the world with them!

Every student does need the skills.

The source (platform) deals specifically with the grooming of polytechnic students, so reason for the 'frequent mentioning of polytechnic students'.

Cheers!

You're right! And I think advocacy should be made, enjoining youths to always try to put the skills they have learned into use.
