Nigeria is a very rich country. It is one of the most endowed nations on earth. It is rather unfortunate that when we talk of agriculture in Nigeria a lot of people limit it to farming it far larger than that.
My concentration today will be looking how an entrepreneur can invest and process some of the abundant agriculture farm produces that we have and a whole lot of this farm produces are wasting away. Let me also correct the misconception that you need a lot of millions to start processing, that is not true. This is where innovation comes into play. As earlier mention, there are several farm produces that can be process into finished product that will create value for the final consumer.
I will run down through a few not a full list but ones that people see every day but don't think it is a viable opportunity to engage.
1. Processing yam into yam flour ( brown Amala and white poundo
2. I Came up with a cheaper and an innovative way to make tomato paste with different flavour or spice
With Ginger
With Garlic
With pepper
With all three

3. Corn flour which could also be added with hungry rice.
4. Tea packaging
5. Potatoes Chips and French fries
6. Concentrate from fruits
7. Spice packaging
8. Meat packaging
9. Peanut butter
10. Making Noodles from Plantain
My concentration on this write up today will be on turning yam into yam flour(browish) as Amala or into white yam flour as (pounded flour). It is interesting to know that our beloved country Nigeria is the highest producer of yam in the world with annual production of 44million tons of yam. Unfortunately Ghana is the highest exporter of yam in the world (another write up for another day)
There are several states that farm yam in Nigeria but these three states stand out because of the large quantities of yam that they cultivate. The states are Benue, Taraba and Niger state. A visit to the yam market in any of this three state will amaze you on the level of result this locals farmers get without have modern farming machines.

Processing of Yam into flour

1. Yam Selection
Once you arrive in the market, you have the option to buy yam in bundles of 100 or 50 at a relatively cheap price. It is highly imperative that you know the type of yam that will give you maxmum value in term of flour content. Some big tubers of yam can give up to 2kg of flour.
2. Storage
It is important to store the yam tubers for a little while so that the yam would lose moisture content. The reason is that with less moisture the better the quality of flour that is obtain when production is finished.

3. Washing:
When one is about to start production, after selecting the tuber of yam, it is imperative that the tuber must be wash so that sand, roots and extraneous material will be removed.

4. Peeling and Slicing.
The yam tubers are peeled and the sliced according to the desired shapes. The peels are also useful in the production as well.

 5. Parboiling;
The sliced yam are boiled to a certain degree and depending on the moisture content so that it doesn't get too soft and then become a problem during drying

6. Drying:
The parboiled yam slices must be dried to at least 8 to 6 percent of moisture with a dryer, the temperature must be set according.

7. Milling
The dried yam slices will milled into fine flour.

8. Sieving
The flour will be sieve so that the flour is devoid of loop of yam that wasn't milled

9. Packaging
The final powder flour is packaged into food grade nylon and then into carton for onward delivered to supermarket and stores or even exported

Sometimes NAFDAC requires that Vitamin C should be added to the flour, so if this is the case it would be necessary that a mixer would be needed.
Sometimes for Amala production you can buy the already process brown flour in some of this market. What you need to do is just to package.

I could give a detailed business plan for this with financial investment. Mail me at wealthagric@gmail.com
