A few months ago, I got a call from a man who apparently said he saw some of the websites I developed and he liked them. He said he wants to develop a website for a college and I was immediately interested in the job. We spoke for days about his choose website and samples he has that I can work with. He gave me a particular website vcc.ca and said he wanted almost the same format. I checked the website and noticed that it has a whole lot of contents all linked together. It's so deep that you cannot completely get to the very end of the website. I bet it must have taken years to put all those contents together.
He also told me he has given the job to two other guys and they abandoned it after they have collected part payments so he will not pay me any advance until I am done with the job. Which I agreed cuz with the way he sounded, he just wanted the job done well. I was wrong!
Apparently after seeing all those contents, I knew that it will take a very patient and unresilient person to not abandon the website but I was determined to do the job.
I told him I'll take 100k which I know it's very low compared to the job but because he had been scammed before, I decided to not charge him too much.
He agreed and I started working on the site. He sent over 40 different pdf contents to me via email so I can fill them into the webs when I'm done developing it. I quickly develop the website within 2 weeks, I decided to develop it on WordPress since it's a content website.
I started editing and filling in the contents, hyperlinking everything together... It took me 2 months to complete finish that. When I was done, I asked me to check the website and he did. He commended my effort and told me he wanted me to change some things and add some things... I started working on his changes for another week.
When I finished, I told him to check and he did then asked me to make some other changes... I did. I noticed that he kept asking me to make changes on things I have done before... And even some changes he told me to make before. I felt like we are just going in a circle!
I told him to pay me some of the agreed fee since we are almost through with the world, he said he will pay 20k since we are not through. I agreed, I just needed him to commit something really.

The repeated changing of this and that went on for 2 weeks, until 2 days ago when I told him I'm done with the work. He said wow, I really tried. And my skill is commendable but he wants me to brush it up a little. That the logo looks blurry... I told him I used the logo he gave me and it was the quality of the logo he gave me. Then I told him I won't work on the website anymore until he has paid me for the work, after all, everything is done besides the logo.
He acted as if he didn't see the message but I'm sure he read it from his phone drop down.
I woke up yesterday to find out he has changed the login details of the website and the cpanel and everything and put the website on maintenance mode!
I was shocked so I immediately contacted him, he told him I couldn't give him the quality of website he wants and he has developed to take the job from me and give it to another person!
I couldn't believe it!..
I worked on this for 3 months and you were checking everyday... I'm still in shock.
Trust me guys, I developed one of the very best website anyone can find anywhere in the world for this man. I have been doing this for 11 years and I'm not a baby developer. Right now, I'm disappointed and sad cuz I don't even know how to react to this. I know I can hire an hacker to take down the website but I'm a good person.
So guys, what do you think I should do at this point?
The website is www.ecac.com.ng
His name is Abiodun Akinyele Peter
He is the owner of Emperor restaurant Lagos
His phone number is 08022618778

I have attached all our conversations to this post...

This is quite unfortunate, he outsmarted you. The truth is, it's difficult for developers to trust clients and it's also difficult for clients to trust developers.

From your explanation, I could deduce that you were working on the client's server...this is so so wrong, if all payment hasn't been made. And if perhaps, it was your server and your client locked you out...that is so unprofessional.

Worst Case Scenario: Even if the client is not comfortable making a 50% down payment. You should have done the job on your own test server, show the client, when client is satisfied, client pays, you move job to live server, you and client gets happy.

Note: You should consider adding charges for changes outside normal job scope.

I'm sure others would learn from your mistake, especially newbies.

I don't remember calling him names... But I am not surprised, you are probably one of those people that only glance through long articles. If you down my skills, I doubt your education level too cuz the work is 'is' not 'his'
And what is wrong with my portfolio website? Can I see yours? maybe I can learn from you. Since you're an island of knowledge. Olodo
Since you want me to peace out... You should (Bleep off) my post.

It's Word not work grin

But really you should learn to take criticisms without getting emotional. If I were u I'd take his down talking as feedback on where to improve. You can feed of criticism and rise up or burn (with anger) and fall.

@OP I can only imagine how pained you would be feeling now. Just like others have been saying, you need to wise-up because there are so many unserious people like that. Never-Ever upload to a client's server (Where you have no control) without getting at least 80% of your fees.

You can set up a folder on your own webserver and upload the sites there for future clients to view. Also, I think you should get at least 40% committment before going all-in on any job cuz poo happens. Anyways, I hope you've learnt your lesson.

Oga, I'm sorry to hear but as your topic is titled, you made a great mistake.

You should have created an admin account for yourself and changed the account he gave you to a user account, as a way of collateral.

Also, you should have possibly changed the cpanel details, especially as he didn't pay anything.

Though, if you created an FTP account and you can still access it, you can download the site files and delete it from the server.

You have learnt the hard way and you will surely recover.

Let it go and put it behind you. It is well

PAID PHP MENTOR NEEDED

I need a paid PHP mentor. I already have some knowledge of css, html and jquery. Mentor will send learning materials and links to websites, I will learn on my own and reach you with my questions.

See this thread, if you are interested.

If you are the person that host the website, you can still access the cpanel from the client area of the hosting company, but if not, I am sorry that the man need the web script which ha has goten from you, he will now take the script and host it in another domain name and server. As a web developer with many years of experience, I only test and show my clients their work on my server and when you confirm and pay complete I will then transfer the script to your server.

First you claim you have been doing this for 11 years and you don't know the rule of the game. That same job can't pass through my table without minimum deposit of 250k. You are the reason why people rubbish this profession. You deserve what you get.

Op

I normally don't comment on stuffs like this but after seeing that website I must say you did a good job and I hope to be better than you soon.

Every disappointment is a blessing
You might have lost out there but believe me you just unknowingly advertised your work.

More people will check the site and you will get busier and hopefully get paid in all

Happy new year

Like I said, it's in the past, I won't dwell on that.
Just to clerify though, he gave me the cpanel login details and the WordPress was already installed which he also gavee the login details. You don't expect me to change the login details when we already have an agreement and it didn't look like he will backtrack on it.
And before I woke up on the said day, he had already change all the login details before even telling me he's no longer interested.

You messed up bro, sad for no reason should you start any Job without a deposit. I remember I have a pending job on ground belonging
To a Nigeria USA based client. After running the homepage the client insisted on adding more features off our initial agreement I just instantly handed over his site to him though I only builded the homepage, the moment I new he was already acting funny I just ignored the site however he already paid a 50% upfront deposit lolz no time to waste oh. Up till now the client haven’t contacted me who cares I go delete the site completely and refund you lolz.

These our job Na diff client Dey here you a programmer not a boy boy, you should be the one in control not the client though you can give the client 50% control power however why would you even allow client to provide cpanel for you lolz I don’t accept that. Some client Na scam oh use ur head lolz.

To me the man was con artiste lol his intention was to scam you. Point noted - never start a job without a 50% deposit and make sure it’s hosted by you not by the client. Be in control not the client, act as a company infact think like a company, note down your policies, terms and conditions and stand by it. Let your client be aware of your terms and conditions.

If they can’t adhere to your terms and conditions make then park well.
