I recently attended a funeral of a young girl that died. The preacher/pastor spoke in behalf of the child and so did many of her relatives. One thing I kept hearing from everyone saying that the little girl is now an angel with God; God needed another angel in heaven.

Instead of comforting me it left a bitter taste in my mouth and left me wondering; if God is the creator of all things both in heaven and on earth why couldn't he just make another angel? Why does a young child have to die in order that God can have one more angel in heaven? Abeg, think about it. It sounds selfish on God's part. In reality God doesn't need us, we need him.

It just puzzled me. I would have been satisfied if the people said something about unforeseen occurrences happens to everyone, thats life and imperfection.

I have been hearing this statement all my life, but never thought about like this. Now I realize it just don't make sense.

I believe we can and should be comforted by the verses below and others like them:
1Thess.4
13 ¶ But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

God needed an angel? I don’t know the context of it, but it doesn’t sound very Biblical.

@meyri << I'm so sorry for what you went through. I can see how that would not be comforting at all. There are a lot of theories as to where we go when we die. Some believe that you go straight to heaven when you die and others believe that when you die you are asleep until the second coming. We still don't know for sure obviously since no one has lived to tell about it.

In my mind, the character of God that I see is loving and doesn't like to see us suffer. I just can't see God taking a girl's life because He needed another angel. God isn't dependent on us or need anything from any human. However, this world is also corrupted by sin and sometimes people just die. We don't always know why. One thing I do know is that everything God does is good. He doesn't cause death or bad things to test us or teach us a lesson. Sometimes bad things happen that are out of God's control. He would love to shield us from all the hurt in the world, but sometimes not even He can always do that. But, through all that hurt, God cries along with us and can make something good come out of that bad thing.
