Mass Emigration: Greed, Mere Adventure Or Survival Instincts? by Contumely: 8:00am On Dec 26, 2018
I have seen people migrate to different countries for greener pastures. This is okay. But the pace now in Nigeria of late is a tad worrisome.

It seems virtually everyone nurses same intention and would board the next flight should the opportunity arise.

This is truer with the middle class. The peasants prolly have no information and money even visa or for flight tickets let alone proof of funds.

People leave 400k to 1 million salary jobs here to emigrate.

Chief of the reasons being bandied to justify this has always been " It's for the kids. I need to give them better bearing in life"

Is it really worth it? Staying in cold as much as minus 40 degrees?

Could this be termed greed, mere adventure , survival instinct or just insatiability of human wants.

Lolz....what these people are seeing that's making them run away, you haven't seen it yet. For now, you think earning #1 million naira will solve all your problems. Don't worry, the time will soon come when you'll understand what is making them leave.

And someone is quoting 400k... grin grin grin

Dts not even enough to pay a child's fees in a decent school.

I wish you success in the test. Honestly we're all coming from different places. 1 million is chicken change for some, 400 thousand is good money for another.

@OP, but you are also planning to relocate.

The truth is that a lot in the middle class are now thinking beyond their big salaries. Big salaries without light, good roads, good affordable schools, good hospitals etc is useless. With the worthlessness of the naira, your big salaries won't be able to fund good education abroad but legal permanent residents abroad can attend those schools paying the local rates. What if an unfortunate sickness happens, where would you run to? While politicians will fly to a hospital abroad the next minute, you will be left to rot in ill equipped naija hospitals with your 400k salary

Secondly, the country is a shithole with useless police and institutions that only extort the people. Your big salaries will not save you from police brutality. If you doubt me, pass a police checkpoint with a laptop or an iPhone and see what will happen. Before you bring out your ID card, you would have been labeled a thief and extorted. Where other place in the world have you seen a national army opening fire on their own unarmed citizens? Do you know that Nigerian army has killed more Nigerians than foreign enemies?

Thirdly, if your president and all other politicians from federal to local use foreign hospitals, schools and have foreign citizenship for their kids without shame, why should the middle class be deceived by mere 1m naira salary to stay in Nigeria?

Fourthly, the worst part is that there is no hope that Nigeria will ever get better and this is because our politics is bullshit. Now, they have already started playing tribal politics ahead of 2019 and 2023 instead focusing on the issues. There is no other place in the world where the front runners in a national elections are useless set of people. If Nigeria was a normal society, 2019 elections should have been a battle between the likes of Sowore, Moughalu, Hashim and those other young outsiders but no,Nigerians will rather reinforce failure and expect a miracle. I can go on and on

Ladies and gentlemen, anyone who wants to remain in Nigeria should gladly remain. What I don't like is people trying to criticize others who want to leave. As long as you are immigrating legally and not trying to use a visitors Visa to leave the country, I encourage you to leave if possible. But note, if you worship money, stay in Nigeria cos you may not make all those crazy illegal money abroad. Here, we work hard. In fact, some people do 2 jobs to make ends meet but we enjoy what majority of Nigerians may never enjoy in their lifetime cos the society works for all.

well said bro, even some of the people who earn good salaries do not feel safe. You fear for kidnapping and other vices. Some people just want to have a better quality of life, we worship money and forget about quality of life. I checked online and saw that Nigeria had the 8th lowest life expentancy in the world. Even war torn countries in the middle east had higher rankings, it makes me wonder what is really wrong. We are living like the frog who is in a pot and the water is gradually warmed till it boils, it doesn't know it is boiling because it feels comfortable. We need to see the reality and enact some change or else whoever wants to leave should gladly leave.

You've just summarized all I've spent a year saying trying to open people's eyes.

Politicians mostly see Nigeria like a whale that washed off the shore. Cut as much whale parts as you can carry. You can come back and cut some more off the whale if others haven't finished cutting it.

The looting will never end because the whale doesn't seem to be diminishing inspite of the massive butchering.

I cannot say that Nigeria is finished because I am not God. However I encourage people to relocate legally once the option is available.

but many Nigerians are nuisances in the street of other countries, the Nigeria many are running away from is where some are planning to come. I was onboard Ethiopian airline some months back to lagos and was wondering why there were more Chinese on board that flight... where we are seeing challenges, some foreigners are seeing opportunities. That’s life. Emmigration is never a bad thing. The point you raised up there are very valid but inside in the matter is the nuisance many of our brothers become in these countries. There are indians, Chinese everywhere just like Nigerians. I want to think it is because of the population but the question remains why are Nigerians nuisances.

I disagree. The same way a few foreigners see opportunities is the same way just a handful of Nigerians get those opportunities. Besides most of those foreigners are going for tourism.

Now kindly tell me what is wrong what our own tourism system? Terrorism and mismanagement? Sole dependence on crude oil:Easy money for the Nigerian government that involves little or no work and no brains and no stress to come by?

Nigeria will never explore other creative means of generating revenue until crude oil is finished.

Instead of the government to boost tourism and create jobs, they are busy trying to tax beggars and check your generators for emission.
