Ain't heard nothing on any ASUU going on strike. for us at OOU, exams are going on seriously, even though our lecturers are being owed 6 months salary, I really feel like asking if it is any worth being the builder of tomorrow.

I really do not know what to say, so that I do not risk sounding selfish. the truth is that the government has not done its job but I can not really concur to the idea that all other schools should join in. the last four months did not yield any results.

I for one thing that state schools should be severed from the general ASUU, this is so because it is only when the "almighty" federal schools -UNILAG, IBADAN, OAU, ZARIA and co are in dire straits that they drag others along. when state owned schools are going through their own individual crises where are they- always. To speak for my institution, OOU lecturers have not been paid foor siix consecutive months- WHERE WAS/IS THE GENERAL ASUU. They should stop dragging everybody along to through the halls of chauvinism to obtaiin only what avours them.
LET EVERY ONE FIGHT HIS OWN FIGHT.

How are you flexing the strike, do you have an idea if the parties involved have met already or are even meeting?

With the one we are in already NUC are still breathing down on our neck, giving us a two week ultimatum, threatening to withdraw our license should we not stop MCQ.

The South-east Governors Forum comprising of Abia, Anambra, Enugu,Ebonyi and Imo states yesterday, expressed concerned over  the approach adopted by striking workers under the umbrella of the Zonal Union of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying the striking staff failed to consider the peculiar circumstances of individual states of the zone.

The governors who met at the Government House, Enugu to discuss matters of critical importance to the zone and the action, in a communique signed by the group’s Chairman,   Peter Obi of Anambra, said it also deliberated on ecological problems and security situation in the zone.

On the striking workers, it said “although mindful of the right of the workers  to  demand  better  conditions  of service,  we are concerned about the approach adopted by the striking workers under the umbrella of the Zonal Union of ASUU which is not a legal body, without cognisance of the Federal structure of the country. It is also regrettable that the striking staff failed to consider the peculiar circumstances of individual states of the zone, adding
"Notwithstanding, we sympathise with the students and their parents."

Continuing, it said the Federal Government  while reaching agreement with the ASUU at the national level, stated clearly that the agreement was not binding on state and private universities and advised the unions to negotiate individually with the respective bodies in the states.

“To negotiate individually with the respective state chapters of the union and on that note, each government will commence discussions with the staff and students of the respective institutions, as well as other key stakeholders. While this is going on, we appeal that the universities be re-opened for normal academic activities in the interest of our children,” he pleaded.

On ecological problems in the zone, the governors thanked President Goodluck Jonathan on the efforts so far made to address the situation including the recent approval of funds. They also reiterated that urgent action is required as the situation is still very critical.

The Eastern zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has vowed to carry out an enlightenment campaign against the present crop of South Eastern political leaders, particularly those who are not education friendly.

Briefing journalists in Owerri at the Imo State University (Evan Enwerem University) the Zonal Coordinator, Calabar zone of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, accused the governors of the South East geo-political zone of deliberately neglecting education to the detriment of the society.

Flanked by other officials of ASUU from different zones of the South East and South South, Osodeke said what the South East governors are interested in is to go for second term, stressing that none of them is interested in enhancing university education in their zone.

The briefing was held to intimate journalists on the current strike of academic staff in the state owned universities in the South East. This was followed after a one-day meeting in Owerri by the officials of the union from the two zones.

He vowed that ASUU would not call off the one-month strike until the demands union, which include better condition of service in the universities, funding as well as the university autonomy are met by the authorities.

The university don who is also the coordinator of the committee monitoring the strike in the South East, condemned Governor Peter Obi’s claim that the South East governors cannot pay the salaries and allowances ASUU is demanding.

He maintained that the states in the zone have enough money to pay and also improve their universities, wondering why they could not pay when universities in the North and South West, which, according to him, collect fewer allocations, are paying comfortably.

His word, “some of them (the governors) collect more than N500 million monthly as security votes when they cannot fund their universities with less than N450 million. The point is that some of them are greedy and not interested in enhancing the quality of education in the universities.

“They’re not interested in the welfare of the people because they know that they’re not there through our votes. But we’re assuring them that this time around, our votes must count. We’ll make sure that they won’t come back unless those ready to work for those that vote them in.”
