Ndigbo Adopts Jonathan As Candidate. by HighChief4(m): 6:51pm On Aug 17, 2010
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan Monday got the approval of the South-East to run in next year’s election.

At a political summit, the region adopted him as its candidate.

The decision was taken at its summit, which was attended by Ndigbo from all walks of life.

It was gathered that the group resolved that a Jonathan presidency would bring development to the region.

The main factor that determined the choice of Jonathan was said to be the desire to heal the wounds among the minorities of the former Eastern Region.

It was said that everything should be done to ensure the return to the pre-1952 era when things worked harmoniously among the ethnic groups.

Presenting the communiqué at the end of the summit, the Convener, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, said the Jonathan ticket would depend on negotiation in which Ndigbo would table their expectations.

Mbazulike explained that in considering national quest, Ndigbo would not accept to play the second fiddle in the country where they played leadership roles during the struggle for independence.

He said: "At independence, Nigeria was made up of three regions, which later became four regions that were further divided into states by military fiat over which Ndigbo had little or no say.

"The North has ruled the country for 33 years; the West 12 years; zoning or no zoning, rotation or not, the old Eastern region, for the sake of equity and justice, shall produce the next President of Nigeria.

"The region that produced over 90 per cent of the wealth of the country should for a change have a prime position in the governance of the country.

"That given the fact that what is now known as Bayelsa State used to be the Brass District of Eastern Region, and that the Eastern and Mid-Western regions have been marginalised in the presidency of Nigeria."

In agreement with other leaders at the summit, Mbazulike endorsed Jonathan.

He said: "consequently, the summit has decided to endorse the presidential aspiration of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan."

In attendance were Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Mr. Chukwuemeka Ojukwu Jnr., who represented his father; Anlican bishop of Awka, M. S. C. Anikwenwa, Maxi Okwu, Osita Okechukwu, Dr. Dozie Ikedife and Senato Offia Nwali.
