There's sense in what this guy is saying. A look into the western Nigeria crises of 1963( A remote cause of the military takeover of 1965 and the civil war of 1967-1970) will reveal that the announcement of fake election results by broadcast houses loyal to the two leading parties in the region greatly contributed to the crises..... In this age of social media where there's no control whatsoever over what is posted and with this tense political situation, a shutdown of the internet is somehow a right call..... Unfortunately, the SCR(Smart card readers) relies on d internet for result transmission and d cost of a total shutdown of the internet (resulting from losses that online Business will record, those who use it for educational purposes and other constructive users of the internet) is just more than the country can afford. I will recommend a shutdown of access to the various social media platform from 8am on election day till the results are officially announced by INEC

Controversial security expert, Mr Aye Dee has said Nigerians don't have the right to access internet on election day as so it should be shut down.

In his defence, Aye Dee argued that the internet encourages the spread of fake news, which is very much likely to ignite crisis across the country during and after the election.

He wrote:

Access to the internet in Nigeria is NOT a right, if @inecnigeria believes internet access during the election needs to be restricted in order to prevent the spread of #FakeNews, specifically fake election results, it would be the right thing to do for Nigeria's sake.

The internet in should be shut down by 11:59PM on Friday, Feb. 15th, 2019 and restored by 11:59pm on Saturday, February 16th, 2019. If this is not done, there will be chaos as fake results are bound to be brandished by both @OfficialAPCNg and @OfficialPDPNig, causing chaos.

In this crucial election, Nigerian cannot afford to have the electorate manipualted by rumors and propaganda emanating from both major parties. Therefore, it makes sense to ensure the sanctity of the electoral proccess by restricting access to the internet.

Bangladesh with a population of 160 million + shut down its internet before its elections, heaven did not fall, the poll was orderly , free and fair. Nigeria deserves same.

I did not say internet should be restricted for just PDP supporters or just for APC supporters, I said it should be restricted for ALL Nigerians.

sad Even though I'm a born again Christian, i think the Federal government should imitate North Korea by banning internet and phone calls for we citizens (especially we southerners) in order to curb spread of fake news and anti government posts on social media. Only government officials and the Elites should be allowed internet and phone usage like it's done in North Korea and Eritrea. We will return to the era of communicating through letter writing and Nipost. We Nigerians are not yet matured for social media especially we Christians sad

After election, what next?

For Peter Obi?

For Atiku?

For Buhari?

For Osinbajo?

For you?

After election, when the internet is turned back on, would it reduce the spread of fake news?

What about individuals running online businesses? Should their sustenance be cut because of the promise of a few politicians?

Rather than treat issues at the root, we suggest temporary, ill-thought solutions that only worsen issues.

Fake news spreads because our politicians benefit from it. They toy with our fears and emotions - there is a struggle for who can cast the other in the most negative light.

Two stupid men go quarrel, begin fight. Press go rush talk say na Muslim and Christian dey fight. Why d fight start no go concern anybody, Christian go protect Christian, Muslim go protect Muslim.

Na Hate dem dey use control us... Na hate go turn person from dead to lifeless to Sudanese back to tyrant. Na hate carry Kanu go heaven
.

I hope as a society we one day regain our sanity. Our phones are way smarter than us.

Very nice points.. But can we all be truthful to our selves? These things will continue to happen here. What we really need is allowing a loosed federal system of govt. Regions with same or similar cultures should practice their own system.

This thing called unitary federal system will not work. The politicians know this.

Access to the Internet is an inalienable right of every citizen in the 21st Century. This is tantamount to a denial of freedom of expression.

In this era when hundreds of essential industries need internet ranging from healthcare to banking sectors, it is high treason to even imagine such a thing.

Is it a surprise that only short-sighted APC supporters are calling for internet shut down on election day. Becareful what you wish for because you may get it. Those of you calling for dictatorship may get your wish, just that it may not be your lifeless Buhari that will be administering that dictatorship but the present day opposition. Then you will find yourselves at the receiving end.
