Hello here, I understand that nairaland has been growing and has been a success. For over 13 years and still standing.

However I am not sure in what way nairaland has been using machine learning but I was thinking if there could be a way to implement machine learning to make nairaland better than it is now.

Recently, there has been trends of people posting betting images and spamming over all the threads. There should be a way to create models to detect these images and label them as spam, and upon posting the image on another thread, it automatically gets deleted without any mod actually deleting it as well as the poster getting banned for a few hours.

These guys who keep posting betting stuffs have been spamming everywhere on nairaland and it has been annoying for users who have been going through threads.
I don't know how easy it might come but with the right team, they should be able to get this done. It does not apply to only images alone but text of spamming.

The logic is the same, detect spam images and delete it to make nairaland more stress free and less annoying for its users.

I don't really have knowledge about this ML of a thing so kindly correct me where I could be wrong.

What are your thoughts fellow programmers

What are your thoughts?

This is a solid idea which I believe Facebook has thought of or already implemented.
Suggesting such here is like advicing NTA to switch their video broadcast to the new HEVC codec.
NTA till now has no idea how to migrate their video streams to 1080i or 720p high definition so such a request will fall on deaf ears.

Okay, after a bit of thought, I think machine learning is good but not applicable on this website without third party tinkering.
However, a set of human mods can take up the task of manually identifying images as they come.
It is possible but requires capital the admin is not willing to spend.
Their job will require realtime monitoring of threads whereby they swiftly delete the images as quick as they are posted.
A team of fifty humans will keep this forum spotless in a maximum of four days.

Makes sense, only if he'd be willing to spend more, to make more...

Spending more to improve the business means less profit going to his bank account.
Nigerians love squeezing the most possible profit from a venture, not caring for customer satisfaction.
I remember very well how he dragged his feet when it came to the decision of paying moderators.
Funny enough all the topics my friend opened regarding the idea stayed accessible for long before he personally closed them.
It showed they were in support of the idea regardless of their boss’s wish.

Nawa o, this is a serious something.
If Mark Zuck had remained closed minded like this, I doubt if Facebook would have left Harvard...

I just noticed that Seun has completely abandoned this section, probably scared of reading people's negative reviews.

His last post on this section was 6 months ago and I'm guessing that's because it made front page.

Two months later

These guys literally hijacks the threads before/immediately it reaches front page.

It gets annoying by the day!

Even if machine learning is not implemented, a feature where if a person is reported too much, the person could shop ban could be implemented.

This is an URGENT REQUEST. If you're familiar with Machine learning specifically stock price prediction using hybrid models. If not can you refer me to someone else? I am in need of assistance for my project. Thanks in advance. Call or whatsapp 08163441359

You could implement it and share a demo. I'd be willing to assist.

i can't do anything without his consent and help, he'll have to provide sample of images that he thinks are spam and those that aren't.. i cannot scrap the forum for that

Can this be automated? Like using Python web scraping for that?

It would be a lot of work. You'd have to scrape the forum for posts [EASY]. Then, you'd sift through them, labelling each one as spam or non-spam [STRESSFULL].
Even if Seun was to assist by providing the data, you'd have to label it anyway.

Most of the tasks done by moderators can be automated using machine learning. It's a brilliant idea.

I've been thinking about this recently but with a wider picture in mind.

AI - and how much it can be leveraged to reduce lots and lots of unwanted content on Nairaland..

Personally, I do not have the skillset to advise what model best fits, but I'm sure there's an opportunity here to explore..
