In implementing its decision to celebrate all those that have played major roles in the growth and development of the nascent institution, the Management of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has named a major campus road linking its take-off site to the G. O. Chukwu (administrative) block after the immediate past executive governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Chief Martin Nwancho Elechi.
This decision was made known by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, who noted that the young University which is barely 8 years old was established during the tenure of Elechi as the 2nd civilian governor of Ebonyi State. He explained that it was not a mistake that the University came into existence at that material time, adding that the former governor has continued to support the University in the drive to justify its establishment.

The Vice-Chancellor maintained that the decision was a collective one, geared towards recognizing those that have historical attachment to the University and those that are making contributions to speed up its growth and development.

Surprised by the unexpected gesture, the former governor who was on a visit to the University explained that his administration presented three places to the Federal government as potential sites for the University; however the team from the Federal Ministry of Education led by then Minister, Prof. Ruqayah Ahmed Rufai chose Ndufu-Alike.

He also thanked the University Management for the honour, adding that the accelerated infrastructural and academic development being witnessed in the University was testaments of the Vice-Chancellor’s development-oriented and selfless leadership.
“We are proud of what you are doing”, Chief Elechi concluded.

He further used the opportunity to pledge the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand (N250, 000) naira to support the ongoing infrastructural development in the University.

Chief Elechi is the 3rd person the University is honouring in this regard. Others were the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe and Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Oko Chukwu whom the main Library and Administrative Block were named after respectively, in recognition of their pioneering development roles in the University.
