The Japanese automaker, Toyota announced on Thursday that the 2020 models of the 4Runner, Tundra, Tacoma, and Sequoia will be Android Auto compatible. The company also announced that the 2018 Aygo and the 2019 Yaris made for the European market will also feature Android Auto.

Toyota was among the top automakers to manufacture CarPlay compatible cars. In January 2018, the company announced that the 2019 Avalon will feature CarPlay, which will later be included in the sedans and small SUVs.

Rumors of Toyota agreeing to build Android Auto compatible cars surfaced on Bloomberg in September 2018, after so many years of holding off. The company cited security concern as one of the reasons for holding off for a very long time. Toyota developed its own infotainment system instead based on Automotive Grade Linux, which uses Ford's SmartDeviceLink to help some smartphone apps get connected to on a car's screen, mimicking the main draw of CarPlay and Android Auto.


A few years back, automakers were skeptical and feared the idea of featuring CarPlay and Android Auto on their cars. Now the story has changed as most top players in the automobile industry like BMW and Volvo have embraced the new technology and build cars with Android Auto and CarPlay features.

Meanwhile, Google has been working with some automakers on the launching of a native version of Android Auto. It was gathered that the new Android-powered infotainment system will be launched this year on the all-electric Polestar 2, the first car with Google's native Android Auto. A deal was also made by Google bring the Android infotainment system to the joint partnership cars made by Renault, Nisan, Mitshibushi.
