2011: JONATHAN TEARS NOLLYWOOD APART - As the 2011 general elections draw nearer, the decision of some Nollywood stars to collect N300, 000 each before campaigning for President Goodluck Jonathan's ambition has torn the Nigerian movie industry apart. Some of the movie stars have formed a group christened Nollywood Stars for Jonathan, and their aim is to shoot a commercial geared towards campaigning for the President to remain in office for the next four years with the fee of N300, 000 for each of the stars involved in it. But the move seems to have torn the Nollywood stars apart as other popular actors have declined to be part of it.

Those that are currently in the campaign group which is headed by Francis Duru include Uche Jombo, Ini Edo, Paul Adams, Zack Orji, Pete Edochie, Emeka Ike and about 30 others. Speaking with P.M.NEWS on phone yesterday, the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Segun Arinze, said he is not part of the move. “I heard of it but I’m not involved. It is not that I’m against President Jonathan’s ambition, but doing it for a price is what I’m not comfortable with. I wish those involved good luck.”

“In America, Hollywood and other showbiz stars drummed their support for President Barack Obama during his campaign, and none of them received a dime for doing that. So I don’t know why our own stars here cannot emulate good things. Does that mean they can’t support other good candidates that don’t have money?” Femi Adebodun, a movie buff asked.

why do we always have to compare ourselves to america and whatever america does = good, whatever we do = bad.

ok obama didn't pay celebrites (that you know of), i guess this is good even though he paid hordes of ppl to support him and is still paying lobbists and goodluck is paying aki and paw paw now he's evil. smh.

Its totally wrong, some people look up to these artistes as role models and all, i dont have any problem with what they do to support whoever they want, but what is the idea of collecting money to do so, and after selling your support you expect the president to perform. FAIL

those people should realize their role models are paid faces. they are paid to put their face on things.
from omo soap to politics. All they do is collect money to support things.
you really think Oliver De Coque was so in love with Glo phones he made a song about it? no.
at the same time you think Tiger woods sends pictures to Wheaties cause he supports their cereal with such passion?

no seriously? this is called the modern world, stop being naive.

I have a problem with the proposed action of these actors because these same people complain about the Nigerian government and its dysfunctional ways yet are quick to support someone who they have no evidence of his credibility and what he'd bring to the table, to run a nation whom everyone knows is in need of a very capable candidate. Just goes to show that Nigerians are as corrupt as the government they so much castigate.

As for America, the nation is set. That's why we compare ourselves to them!

Very poor analogies. This is politics and not selling omo. We are talking of alleged "support" of a presidential aspirant (who is even yet to declare I might add). If the support of so called 'role models' can be bought for the highest price, then of what real value and credibility is their 'support' or face to the Nigerian people especially when you consider what is at stake?

cheap minded people and their poor crave for money.

loose morals and cheap sense of worth.

is that all they r worth?

what do their reputations mean to them?

big names without dignity

poor souls indeed, afterall it all amounts to money for them

people without judgement

so if they r paid to support, then the voters should be paid to vote irrespective of conscience.

so so poor poor souls

shiooo! tufikwa!! banza mutanen!!!

My brother, this one na "operation grab what you can" from the "settling" President. Even Nollywood opportunists have now keyed into Uncle Joe's desperation that sees him throwing money at everyone/everything. I think I will have to set up an organisation ASAP and demand 500k/per member from Jonathan if he want's our "endorsement" .
