Funny indeed, after having gone throught the lines in this thread I can safely arrive to one conclusion. This colonialism issue is like life through a window seal. Those who got their independence early wish they had it later, and those who got it late wish they got it sooner.

African's we are at the point where we cannot blame anyone for our misfortune. Let us all admit that this is who we are. We are just a complacent race, that's it.

I agree 100%

Personally, I think no time is late . . . . . . . . . . The only problems i see about Nigeria is that the country was never created to work.

No, We only decided to be fools unto eternity.

Blame Nigerians and Nigeria. Not those who left us to rule ourselves 50 years ago.

Simply Stated after 17years of Democracy, even though
Black South Africans constitute 80% of the Population.
They control less than 10% of the Wealth of the country,

Now i know you dont need a translator to figure that out (No Pun Intended)

Oh! now I get you  grin grin. Its 16 years to be exact. Oh well we could do it Mugabe style, and get all redical but we all know the remifications. So I guess we can give them a very big hand for every 1% they managed to push through the needles eye, and this achieved in a sharing SA by the way. Lets see if we were to count the 62 years (the apartheid years) this was looting by the way, how much more % do you think black SA could potentialy grow its wealth in the next 46 years?

Thanks for your genus inseight.some people sees the world
from under a branch of trees. Others sees from a higher
ground, hills, and mountains. Though, the views from underneath
a tree can be correct, but invariably limited.
Please, people, step-up on higher ground and see the totalities.
See the whole picture.

Real Independence is never given. You have to earn it.
The paper political Independence we got did not guaranty
economic independent. We have to earn it. The pace
have been slow.
I agree with you, these elements has never gone. They
just use their cronies among us to get their interests done.

And where did you get that from that people wished independence had come later. From a few diasporan elements who know nothing about Nigeria? That is a load of rubbish and you know it.
In any case the colonialism in West Africa was mostly about economic exploitation unlike the one in Southern Africa which was about permenent settlement and systematic enslavement and oppression of the indigenous  population.
Re: Nigeria At 50,do You Think The British Left Us Too Early? by bawomolo(m): 12:52am On Nov 05, 2010
But I marvel at the European colonists' grace because they at least left enduring legacies of development behind while pursuing their admittedly selfish interests. I have no doubt that, were Africans the colonists, Europe would have been ravaged, despoiled and obliterated.

it's not exactly colonist "grace" when someone takes 80 cents from your dollar and gives you back 20 cents. we were indeed exploited and given table scraps in order to be appeased. the British were smart with indirect rule.

there wouldn't have been a call for independence if the colonists were that graceful.

@bawomolo, m not sure who you quoted, but both of you I find very correct. However, I believe that Africans are really not interested in any way forward. Yes we have 20cents to start of with but then dont you think its about time we start talking among ourselves as to how can we make the 20 cents grow?

You just have to look at the interaction among people from various countries of the continent on such topics in this forum and its like walking through a school playground. Conversations go something like "my mother is better than yours cos she's a doctor, and the response is the usual, Oh! no my mother is better than yours cos she's a lawyer" nywe-nywe-nywe "I had ice cream after dinner last night, oh no I had a double scoop ice cream before dinner last night" I mean how pathetic hey? I tell you this generation is not any close to making hay on this continent any day soon.

We are doomed to scrum for the 20cents until we learn that we need to put our heads together and learn how to mke the extra 80% on our own terms.

We just continue to remain black, even in this age of awareness, access to knowledge and information. Can we leave the colonial master alone, he did what he did because our ancestors were sleeping period. Now what excuse do you and I have today? What kind of work are we doing to secure the future of our next generations.

That doesnt mean we shudnt revisit our past, just because we hav 2 go forward. We are still influenced by d west cos we have sittin dummies as presidents. S.A is doing better today cos the machinery n system of dnin things right is still there, left by n still somehw managed by the colonial masters. Nigeria is doing bad 2day cos we agitated so early 4 freedom n were then left 2 d hands of some wrong black men. I love our race, but i wont fail 2 admit dat we hav d largest concentratn of dumb as.s people on earth.

So you have not  digested what we 've been saying on this forum.

Again the whites in south africa were there for permanent settlement not colonization. That is why they were minded to build a country that served their economic interests. These settlers are in fact full citizens not colonists and regard themselves as fully south african. At the same time the black population was brutally subjugated  and oppressed.

You expected the British colonists in Nigeria to stay for how long exactly? Until there was armed insurrection like the kind witnessed in Angola and Mozambique which lasted for nearly 20  years after the portuguese left in 1975 with the countries ravaged?

So no it is quite childish and immature for you to be thinking in such a retrogressive manner that is if you are truly a Nigerian.

Then if you consider yourself dumb, why not work on yourself instead of spewing this recycled nonsense. It is not the responsibility of Europeans to develop you as an individual  or the people and infrastructure of your home village. That is what real independence entails- taking responsibility for your own decisions and actions.

It show your lack of knowledge about Africa history, colonization and the struggle for nationalism. How can you talk about Africa under-development without acknowledging the exploitation by western euopean colonists that put Africa in the backstage ?

what kind of self-hating comment is this.

the claim that the british left to early is false, there would have been a power vacuum whether the british left in 1920 or 1980. Our ability to govern ourselves broke down thanks to indirect rule. It's also no surprise, lots of African dictators were products of highly politicized colonial armies (e.g mobutu). Our failure as a country isn't because colonialism ended early but because we have a created a united identity.

I strongly believe they left too early. After 50yrs, the evidence is clear that not only are we not capable to govern ourselves, we lack the loyalty, honesty and compassion to treat our fellow Africans or even Nigerians with love and care. So yes, the Brits left way too early. What have we achieved since they left? Nothing other than corruption and wars. We discovered oil wealth but after 50yrs, not a single development to count. Thank you

Re: Nigeria At 50,do You Think The British Left Us Too Early? by Jefftrust(m): 9:38pm On Nov 05, 2010
It doesn't matter what condition, lets look at ourselves in the mirror and be man or human enough to admit that we have failed ourselves terribly. Why is that so hard to accept? Again, this is the fundamental problem with the entire black race and even more so Nigerians. The failure to see these shorting comings and try to accept responsibility and look for solid ways to make lasting changes. Blaming every whiteman or woman will not solve any of our glaring problems, #1 Corruption. After 50 yrs, corruption is still the core issue along with all that comes with it. Why can't we see the need to develop our country and people? Instead of stealing the wealth and taking it to western banks for safekeeping. These heartless thieves buy lavish homes in western countries and run there the minute they sense a hiccup coming. Not until we openly accept that we can do better than this, another 50 yrs will go by with nothing to show for it.

Look who are you and under what user-name(just 2 posts) are you masquerading to come up with these irrelevant strawman arguments. If you want to talk about financial mismanagement- an issue which recurs in any developing country- why not open a thread for that? So if the colonists left in 2000 there wouldn't have been subsequent mismanagement?

However the one thing that is more boring than a conspiracy theorist is a conspiracy theory refuter. cool
Re: Nigeria At 50,do You Think The British Left Us Too Early? by marocguy(m): 11:15am On Nov 07, 2010
Tensor, whether they are settling fully in those places or not doesnt matter. The truth is dat you hav 2 make sacrifices 2 achieve dat. If they are so dominant in south africa, let them contest 4 president. Or how are they controlling india today? They are beign gradually pushed 2 d backstage n dat is a gradual process. Everybody wont do it d mugabe way. Believe me,we hav seen worse marginalisation frm our own people and we sacrifice 4 nothn. We all fail 2 believe it because of our self pride. Ours is a case of pupils forcefully sent 2 school n midway, after learnin 2 speak english n luk decent, decided 2 quit school because of flogging n pain dat goes 2 school, and dats a sign of cowardice on our part.Yes,we all admit dat d british came with selfish interest, but dats doesnt mean they werent putting things right, though primarily to their advantage, but dats to our long term gain. The few cities we hav 2day,d survivin process in our civil service n education sector and almost all our major roads n a lot of other things we depend on 4 our survival today,is credited 2 d british. Other structures we built on our own such as our political system n constitution, geopolitical zoning system n d rest r responsible 4 our foes. So ask yourself dis question, where are we headed to? We are fast moving back with reverse gear, while others r going forward geometrically. I am not a fan of d west or white supremacy, cos i actually detest them so much, but i think rationally. Since everybody is against d consequencies of d britons stayn longer n setting, our fathers cud hav resisted western culture n become traditional conservatives, since we werent ready 2 finnish wat we started n bear d consequence. Fact remains,we neva learnt leadership n discipline n we fail 2 admit it. Tell me any presiden since 1960 dat performed well in all sectors (includn national security) dat u would genuinely score 50% performance?
