Effective Waste Management In Rural Areas by ibro2much(m): 8:00am On Feb 24, 2019 |
From time immemorial human activities on planet earth usually generate waste ranging from solid, liquid, combustible and non-combustible biodegradable and non-biodegradable. If you live in urban city like lagos and co. where waste is normally collected by waste collector (LAWMA/PSP) it may not seems much of a problem to you. But if you live in a rural area where there are no waste collector, household waste disposal becomes much of an headache. Since relocating to my site at Ayetoro Itele,Ogun State from Oshodi in Lagos state, waste management has been one of the problems i encountered.what i usually do before was to transporting my waste from my house in Ayetoro in Ogun State to Lagos(Iyana-Ipaja)for disposal at PSP designated waste disposal point. overtime,i realized that method is not only stressful, its disgusting and time consuming, and sometimes the PSP people would not allow me to dump my waste. so i made research on the online on effective waste management and i came about some beautiful ideas on managing my household waste,so i would like to share my waste disposal ideas with fellow nairalander. the majority of waste generated in my household are solid waste, some biodegradable(eg leftover foods) some not(nylon, paper, used tin milk, plastic and co), biodegradable for the biodegradable(jute leaf stem(igi ewedu),left over foods etc),i usually compost it and use it as manure for my small garden. non-biodegrable for this,i usually separate the metals(used tin milk, used baby food can etc)from it and the rest in a sack(I sell the metals to aboki after collecting it for a period of time). the remaining which comprises about 75% of all waste is what i usually burn in my environmental friendly waste incinerator that is constructed.

the construction of the environmental friendly burn drum costs #4000, breakdown of cost used drum bought from aboki's #1500 net used for bottom #1000 welder workmanship #1500 advantages of the burn drum (1)keeps waste together(confined),rather than being scattered about the premises. (2)its burns down everything into ashes (3)cost effective (4)does not allow burning particle fly around(relatively safe) (5)environmentally friendly (6)it prevents rain from wetting the waste in it in my next post i will discuss how i constructed the environment friendly burn drum 1 Like |
