Lagos Alerts Residents On Possible Rise In Water Levels ! by wales(m): 6:39am On Sep 01, 2010
Lagos State Government, on Tuesday, alerted residents along the Lekki and Victoria Island corridor that there might be rise in the water level of the Atlantic Ocean.

The state Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructural Development, Mr. Segun Oniru, said the persistent rise in water level in the Atlantic Ocean, which, he said, might have triggered excessive flooding in countries such as Pakistan, India and the Caribbean, was likely to repeat itself at the Lagos water front.

He, therefore, cautioned residents along the Lekki and Victoria Island corridor to reduce their activities along the Lagoon and ocean at this period in order to stay off danger.

While Oniru ruled out any imminent danger, he, however, warned against what he referred to as ‘spring high tide’ which usually occurred in June and mid- November.

He said, “When strong wind activities happen in the Atlantic, we get ripple effect or direct effect passing our shorelines and such happened about a year ago. But it was not as bad as what happened earlier this year.

“This wind effect in the Atlantic actually blew some vessel anchored within our shore line about 5 kilometres to the beach front, around lighthouse area. We had about 13 vessels along the waterway and from Badagry to Epe about seven or eight were affected during that time of wind activities.”

Oniru explained that the information was not to create panic, but to enlighten Lagosians on what is going on around them and also to make sure that they are careful around the Atlantic Ocean and Lagoon.

He said his ministry recently engaged the service of a consultant to carry out a study on the entire shoreline in Lagos, from Badagry to Epe. He said the study was, among other functions, geared towards informing the government on areas where there might be problems in future and how such would be prevented and also to give warning signs of when this problem will occur.

He said, “What we have done with developer of Eko Atlantic city was to keep testing that wall that they use to protect the city as it develops, the latest test was carried out about two weeks ago and all the test that they carry out, the state government is carried along NPA and NEMASA representative were always invited to come.”

I hope Segun Oniru is aware that people are illegally reclaiming land from the sea. Too many people in Lagos are in danger of flooding. I think we should start preparing people to move away from the danger. We should “make hey, while the sun shines.” But in generally, Lagos State has done more for Lagos people than other Governors of the old western region government.

because of d directional sweep of d ocean current, d apapa port breakwaters were built to protect d port from silting.

those who bought land/houses at exorbitant prices in the aforementioned areas would be pissing in their pants at this news. those houses/land would be worth peanut in years to come when they eventually become submerged in water.

It a known fact that land around the coastal areas attract the highest price all over the world and Nigeria is not an exception. l have lived on mainland and island and both can not be compared, l wont trade island for anything. So all you haters of island people go Jump.

You are confusing issues. This is not a debate about island/mainland. You would be surprised that majority of posters dont even live in Naija.
Its about accepting reality and the fate that awaits the inhabitants of flood prone areas in lagos.
They better start buying canoes while they are still cheap as when the water levels start rising and canoe turn hummer jeep, people go begin swim go mainland.

I thought Pakistan and India are on the coast of the Arabian Sea/Indian Ocean. Oniru need to go back to high school and take his waec.

I was about to say this guy was saying non-sense.  The were hurricanes in the Atlantic ocean heading north. What ripple effect does that even have on Africa as a whole. Note that  most hurricanes start from Africa before hitting Caribbeans, Gulf of Mexico and finally  the USA.

those who bought land/houses at exorbitant prices in the aforementioned areas would be pissing in their pants at this news. those houses/land would be worth peanut in years to come when they eventually become submerged in water.

The value of land in that area will keep towering irrespective of flood stories which I am sure will not happen. What do you expect of people in Florida  and Galveston? The biggest fear is hurricane and thank God we don't have that in Nigeria. The whole Lagos to Mowe will not be liveable by now if we experience a Category 4 hurricane just for once.

In 1999, I overheard 2-destitute at the bar beach talking to each other: They were talking about all these liaison offices along bar beach.

Destitute A: One day, one day , water go pursue them commot from all these buildings and we go move in.

Destitute B:  Naa us them build am for, dem no go fit live there by that time

That was a wishful thinking . I was just laughing.

Island will always blossom and expand. The government attention is there more than any place in Lagos. If lekki/Ajah will be under water soon, why are investors both local/foreign siting there companies on Lekki free trade zone and environ? They are not crazy and they have done their home work.

In fact, I will soon agitate for Lekki State.

What do you expect from Lagos state?

It's not like anyone was expecting Lagos State to become the state of peace or anything. ,

I wonder why anyone should be surprised at this.

The Lagos State government does not have the capacity to project what will truly happen with respect to flooding in that part of Lagos. One cannot just come out and say all these things authoritatively without the necessary information to back it up. It is only a guess based on what is already known and expected about global warming. We all know that sea level will rise if it truly get to that dire state. Look, the ice is already melting in the Arctic. If you think it is a "Joke", then you are lucky if doesn't happen in your life time.

Now tell me, in what society would people knowingly (or ignorantly) acquire landed property with the full knowledge of the reality: expected rise in sea level + usual flooding in that area + "unserious" government. This is a bad mix and the outcome would be disastrous when it eventually happen. It seem we do not know the society we are from.

Let our scientist (if they truly exist) come and tell us how sea level has change relative to the land in our own part of the globe. Look brothers and sisters, nobody is out there looking out for you even though they collect taxes, levies, tenement rate. They would steal the money rather than invest it in people and secure a stress-free future.

And did someone mentioned something about why would foreign investors put their money in such area. It is simple. I would have done the same if I have the fund. They would have recouped their investment before D-day. They are not as stupid as we are. Decisions are made based on useful information and they surely have it. And once they are gone, we would be alone with our head.

If there is D Day, we all die together. Whether I'm lekki and you are in Oyo state. Black man go die before death come.
Disaster does not segregate .

I used an example of hurricane for you the other time. If Cat 4 hurricane hit lagos state for example, it will destroy Ogun & Oyo state as well.

Whether lekki will be under water in 2011, I will still live there.

Na today Acrtic dey melt. How about Asteroid which is projected to land in 2029. Russia and America are looking for a place to deflect it to(maybe lekki)

Let's wait and see if lekki will sink by 2020. If I have the opportunity to buy more lands there, I will.

Whoa.

A question : How about creating some sort of. . . barrier(is that right term?) or buffer like its being done in the Netherlands? Some sort of dam. . . ?

Another, is the issue of dredging. And how it affects the coast.

In case you do not know all the islands of this world is coming under water one after the other due to climate change and noting can change or stop that.

Developed cities have Ocean Overflow and they still have casualties despite the warning and prevention walls plus solid foundations, best thing to do is to stay away from islands because if you escape it today you might not escape it next time. Island is so nice and modern to live and work in but dem no move govt. office from IKJ to island cos of that one ooo, Open your eyes and invest on land no be untop water. If you think the cap fits you den wear it, nothing concern me cos na mainland my own family house dey.

A Clown Says-- Construct hotels, clubs, trade zones and many others for them, dem go kukuma live there even if na fire go wipe them later.

It is one thing for Government to alert Lagosians.
It is another thing for Government to act and ensure something is done about it.
Lagos State Government should use something like the Ecological Fund to put in place adequate emergency response initiatives.
We should not wait for disaster to happen before the Government or indeed Lagosians begin to do something.
Now is the time to act. Alerting Lagosians is not enough.
