Top 10 Best Universities in Nigeria (Latest Ranking) 2019

Education in Africa, especially in countries like Nigeria, has seen much challenges in recent times. With the instability in the Nigerian government, maintaining high standards of learning is very difficult. The frequency of academic strikes among universities in Nigeria has been on the increase, however, some universities within the most populous African country are starting to prove their worth.

Looking at the best universities in Nigeria in the latest ranking released by webometrics of the top universities in Africa which is an all South African top 8 universities, one Nigerian University is positioned among the top 20. However, the list has revealed the top 10 universities in Nigeria which are mentioned below.

10. University of Port Harcourt


The University of Port Harcourt was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt. It is situated in Choba/Aluu town in Rivers State, Nigeria in the South-South geopolitical zone.

In 1977, University College, Port Harcourt received full university status with a total of six schools; Humanities, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Educational Studies, and Science Laboratory Technology. The university, however, now currently has one College, twelve Faculties, and seven Schools.

9. University of Abuja


The University of Abuja is one of the newer higher institutions in Nigeria to make this list. Established in 1988, the university actually began academic work in 1990. The university runs regular degree, diploma, and postgraduate programmes.


Its Main Campus is located along Abuja Airport Road. Its Mini Campus, where the university first started from, is in Gwagwalada.


8. University of Benin (UNIBEN)


The University of Benin was founded in 1970. It started as an Institute of Technology and was accorded the status of a full-fledged University by National Universities Commission (NUC) on 1st July 1971.

The University has continued to grow from strength to strength with a number of Faculties, Departments, Institutes, and Units, offering courses at postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma and certificate levels.


Presently, the total student enrolment at the university stands at over 40,000 made up of both full-time and part-time students.

The University of Nigeria is a federal university located in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. It was founded in 1955 but formally opened on 7 October 1960.

It is the first full-fledged indigenous and autonomous university in Nigeria that was modeled upon the American educational system with a vision to place herself in the forefront of research and development, innovation, knowledge transfer and human resource development in the global academic terrain, while promoting the core values which will ensure the restoration of the dignity of man.
