Traveling by air is arguably the safest, but most dangerous means of transportation. It is safe and incidence seldom happens, compared to a road. However, when it happens, it is always very disastrous.

The aviation industry gives no room for 0.001 percent error. Such an infinitesimal error can be a great disaster. Nevertheless, I enjoy flying and I will not allow the fear of plane crash deprive me of flying. LOL…

Following the Ethiopian airline incident, that led to the death of 157 people ( Including 8 crew members), various social media platforms are awash with various news of the aviation industry. Well, in our case, we present to you the 4 most controversial aircraft (Passenger aircraft) of all time.

It is a common knowledge that regulatory agencies and airlines around the world have grounded the Boeing 737 Max airliner, including the US Federal Aviation Administration that grounded it on Wednesday 13th of March, 2019. Sadly, this is a bad market for Boeing. But the safety of aviation passengers is paramount.

The need to ground Boeing 737 Max became necessary after two of these jets crashed under similar situations within a matter of months. The Ethiopian airline crash has made Boeing 737 Max one of the most controversial aircraft of all time.

4 Most Controversial Aircraft Of All Time

De Havilland Comet

The de Havilland comet entered service in 1952. It was renowned for ushering in the age of jet-powered passenger flight. The jet came with great technological innovation and it was very fast, and sleek.

Who would’ve thought that such a great jet will fade at so easily, it did anyway. The airliner had several crashes. Some of the crashes were due to a design flaw with the wings, which was rectified.

Between 1953 to 1954, three different comets jet broke apart in the sky. This led to the grounding of the airliner by the British Government.

The de Havilland comet tried coming back to the industry, but it was too late, Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 already took over the aviation industry as the jet-powered workhorses.

McDonnell Douglas DC-10

McDonnell Douglas DC-10 is a three-engine aircraft that entered the aviation industry in 1971. It came in then as a rival to Boeing 747 Jumbo jet. Sadly, DC-10 had a series of problems from the beginning.

It all started in 1972 when American Airlines flight 96 ( A new DC-10) made an emergency landing in Detroit after it lost cabin pressure because the cargo door of the plane blew off mid-air. No death was recorded in the incident, but some passengers and crew were injured.

Two years later (1974), Turkish Airline flight 981 ( Another DC-10) also suffered decompression because its cargo door blew off in mid-air. But this time, it was fatal and all 346 passengers and crew on board died when it nosedive into the French countryside.

DC-10 problem didn’t stop here. The airliner was finally grounded in 1979 after negligence of maintenance procedure led to one of the engines to fall off the wings American Airlines flight 191 while taking off from Chicago. It was a fatal incident, and 271 people on board were killed.

So, DC-10 is no longer used for scheduled passengers service, but cargo carriers like FedEx still use it.

Airbus A320

Airbus A320 actually brought Airbus to the limelight. It came into the industry in the mid-80s, but today, it is the second best selling airliner in history after Boeing 737.

This airliner comes with a high level of automation like its advanced fly by wire computer-assisted control system.

In 1988, a demonstration flight tailored towards promoting the capability of A320 went wrong. As the Air France Flight 296 crashed in the air, killing three of the passengers on board.

However, the plane recovered its reputation in the 3 decades after the incident. This particular airliner though controversial has people’s trust.

Boeing 737 Max

The Boeing 737 Max had a humble beginning in 2017 when it started carrying passengers. It was actually trouble free during its first 18 months in service.

But things started going wrong in 2018. On the 28th of October, Lion Air Flight JT610 ( a two-month-old Boeing 737 Max) crashed shortly after taking off from Jakarta, Indonesia, killing all 189 people on board.

Again, on the 10th of March, another new Boeing 737 Max crashed, and the incident happened a few minutes of take off. But this time, it was Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302, and 157 people lost their lives.

The DC-10 was an upgrade on the DC-9. I flew on a DC-10 though.

NOTE:
The Fokker-27 and Fokker-28
should be on the list because of some horendous plane crashes.

I flew on the Nigeria Airways
Fokker-28 back in the day and
one Fokker-28 crashed right in
Nigeria on November 28, 1983.

Those Russian passenger and
cargo planes too that drop from
the skies like stones should be
on this list. Antonov, Tupolev, etc. Lol.
