Fine, fine, maybe I’m way in over my head by putting this among the list of crazy things on the internet, but I have my reasons. The word “crazy” has been reinvented, refurbished, and repackaged over the decades. It has gone from the word you use to describe someone who just jumped to the front of a long queue at the ATM or coffee shop to what you’d call your best friend if they ever suggested running away or another mind-blowing idea. Not that the idea of running away is mind-blowing – well, it is, until you discover working for cash means standing long hours at counters and talking to people you don’t like – but you get the gist.

The History of Crazy

Yea, let’s talk about how crazy managed to convince everyone in the world that it is not just a word to describe madness, or as Google puts it, wild or aggressive behavior. To make it worse, crazy is listed among words like insane, deranged, demented, lunatic, disturbed, unhinged, and the list goes on and on. Honestly, you can almost feel “crazy” cringing as I typed those hurtful words.

Put yourself in its shoes, and you will see why it had to seek redress – or salvation – and escape from the coalition of lost souls. I bet Crazy cried every night until the god of words accidentally slipped it into the mouth of a wife who had just gotten all account details of her cheating husband. She called him Crazy, but the husband loved it. In fact, he loved it so much that he uttered the magic words, “I’m Crazy about Cindy.” From that night, Crazy went from being the most abused word to the most abused word – okay, in a good and bad way. Now, crazy sits and dines with words like brilliant, fantastic, enthusiastic, and other words that went to Harvard University. Call it a deserter but it does feel good to be the one your parents praise for a change.

I could go on to tell you about the reinvention of Crazy, but I don’t have time for history lessons – go to Harvard, or Google, or whatever. Oh dear, I already did, but here’s the point; I adopted that crazy boy because I, like that husband that fateful night, had to come to terms with many things. Many people have called me naughty, troublesome, yadayada because they couldn’t see the gentle, easygoing, mild side of me that likes to sit on his own. While I wouldn’t blame them for willful blindness, I had to come to a truce – call myself Crazy. That way, when I do the bad and good, it will be neutralized under the blessings of Crazy. Damn, I’m a Genius!
